NCERT Class 8 Science Chapter 9 The Amazing World of Solutes, Solvents, and Solutions Notes explain solutions, solubility, saturated solutions, density, mass, volume, displacement and floating for the 2026-27 NCERT Curiosity textbook.
- Best for quick revision: covers solute, solvent, solution, saturated and unsaturated solution, density and relative density.
- Useful for numericals: includes density formula, displacement method and common unit checks.
- Free PDF: download the full chapter notes with diagrams, tables and exam answer frames.

Student Feedback: Students revise this chapter faster when they separate it into two tracks: dissolving and solubility first, then density and floating.
The Amazing World of Solutes Solvents and Solutions Notes Overview
Class 8 Science Chapter 9 explains why salt and sugar dissolve evenly in water, why extra solute stops dissolving after a point, and how temperature changes solubility.
The chapter then connects floating and sinking to density. Students learn to measure mass with a balance, volume with a measuring cylinder, and irregular solid volume by water displacement.

Solutes Solvents and Solutions in Class 8 Science Chapter 9
A solution is a uniform mixture. In salt water, salt is the solute, water is the solvent and salt water is the solution. Chalk powder and water do not form a solution because the chalk does not dissolve evenly.

| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Solute | Substance that dissolves | Salt in salt water |
| Solvent | Substance in which solute dissolves | Water in salt water |
| Solution | Uniform mixture | ORS, sugar water |
| Non-uniform mixture | Components are not evenly distributed | Sand and water |
Solubility Saturated Solutions and Temperature
An unsaturated solution can dissolve more solute at a given temperature. A saturated solution cannot dissolve more solute at that temperature, so extra solute remains undissolved.
- Most solids: solubility generally increases on heating.
- Many gases: solubility generally decreases on heating.
- Aquatic life: dissolved oxygen in water supports fish and plants.
Density Mass Volume and Floating
Density is mass per unit volume. A substance that has more mass packed in the same volume is denser. Objects usually float in water when their effective density is less than water.

For irregular solids, volume is measured by water displacement. If water rises from 50 mL to 55 mL after a stone is lowered, the stone's volume is 5 cm3.

Student Doubts on Class 8 Science Chapter 9
The Amazing World of Solutes Solvents and Solutions Class 8 Notes FAQs
Ques. What is a solution in Class 8 Science Chapter 9?
Ans. A solution is a uniform mixture in which the solute dissolves evenly in the solvent. Salt water is an example.
Ques. What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated solution?
Ans. An unsaturated solution can dissolve more solute at a given temperature. A saturated solution cannot dissolve more at that temperature.
Ques. What is density?
Ans. Density is mass per unit volume. It is calculated by dividing mass by volume.
Ques. How is the volume of an irregular solid measured?
Ans. It is measured by water displacement. The rise in water level equals the volume of the object.
