Class 12 Biotechnology Chapter 10 NCERT Solutions

Student Feedback: Students said this chapter becomes easier when they separate upstream preparation, bioreactor operation and downstream purification before solving the exercise.

Class 12 Biotechnology Chapter 10 NCERT Solutions for Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing are provided here for the 2026-27 CBSE syllabus. These solutions cover every exercise question from the official NCERT textbook.

  • Stepwise answers for all 10 exercise questions.
  • Clear coverage of bioreactor design, upstream processing and downstream processing.
  • Direct support for MCQ, matching and assertion-reason revision.

Class 12 Biotechnology Chapter 10 Exercise Solutions

Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing explains how biological systems are converted into controlled production systems. The chapter starts with the historical importance of penicillin and moves into fermenter design, process modes, product recovery and examples of commercial products.

The NCERT exercise asks students to compare primary and secondary metabolites, explain bioprocess challenges, describe bioreactor components and solve direct application questions. The linked question cards give separate check-solution and expert-solution views for quick practice.

Operational Stages of Bioprocess

Operational stages of bioprocessing

A bioprocess has two broad stages. Upstream processing prepares the medium, sterilises equipment, develops inoculum and sets growth conditions. Downstream processing starts after fermentation and focuses on recovery, purification, packaging and effluent handling.

For exam writing, remember the order: stock culture, nutrient medium, sterilisation, inoculum, bioreactor run, recovery, purification and packaging. This route also explains why sterility, aeration, agitation, pH and temperature are repeatedly mentioned in the chapter.

Recovery and Purification of Products

Recovery and purification flow for intracellular product

Product recovery depends on whether the product is extracellular or intracellular. For an intracellular product, cells are first separated from the broth, ruptured carefully and then processed to remove debris. The product can then be recovered by extraction or adsorption and purified through precipitation, chromatography, dialysis, reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration.

Solid-liquid separation is usually done by filtration or centrifugation. Reverse osmosis uses pressure to move water across a membrane, while dialysis removes small solutes through a selectively permeable membrane.
