Algebra Play NCERT Solutions PDF Overview
The Class 8 Mathematics Chapter 6 solutions explain how algebra turns a puzzle into a small equation. Students first name the unknown, then translate each instruction and simplify the expression. The key idea is that the starting number often cancels, leaving a fixed answer.
| Topic | What the solution teaches | Quick check |
|---|---|---|
| Number tricks | Why fixed answers appear after operations | Track the starting number as x |
| Number pyramids | How to find the top without filling every row | Use a plus 2b plus c |
| Calendar grids | How a grid sum reveals the top-left date | Use 4a plus 16 |
| Divisibility tricks | Why reverse and cyclic numbers have fixed factors | Write place values first |

Think of a Number Tricks in Algebra Play

In a number trick, the starting number is written as x. Every instruction then changes the expression. For example, double, add 6, divide by 2 and subtract the original number gives x plus 3 minus x, so the answer is 3.
- For a final answer of 3: add 6 before dividing by 2.
- For a final answer of 5: add 10 before dividing by 2.
- For a new trick: choose operations that cancel x and leave a constant.
Number Pyramids and Calendar Grids Solutions

For a three-row number pyramid, the bottom row a, b and c gives top value a plus 2b plus c. For a four-row pyramid, the bottom row a, b, c and d gives a plus 3b plus 3c plus d. Calendar grids work because dates increase by 1 across a row and by 7 down a column.
Important: for a 2 by 2 calendar grid, if the top-left date is a, the sum is 4a plus 16. If the sum is 36, then a is 5, so the grid is 5, 6, 12 and 13.
Divisibility Tricks and Algebra Word Problems
The reverse-number trick works because a two-digit number ab has value 10a plus b. Its reverse ba has value 10b plus a. Their difference becomes 9 times the digit difference, so it is divisible by 9.
| Question type | Algebra setup | Final result |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse difference | 10b plus a minus 10a minus b | 9 times the digit difference |
| Reverse sum | 10a plus b plus 10b plus a | 11 times the digit sum |
| Dosa cart problem | Profit equals revenue minus cost | Rs. 80 per dosa or 175 dosas |
| Karim and the Genie | Track doubling and payment per round | Starts with 7 coins |
