Deakin University is a public research university in Victoria, Australia, with four campuses. It holds #227 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Deakin University teaches business, information technology, engineering, health, nursing and education degrees, all delivered in English. Three intakes open each year, starting in March, July and November, which shortens the wait. Indian applicants cluster in information technology, data science, cyber security and commerce degrees at Burwood.
- QS ranking: #227 in the QS World University Rankings 2027
- Acceptance rate: 75% (estimated), placing it among the more accessible Australian publics
- Intakes: Trimester 1 in March, Trimester 2 in July and Trimester 3 in November
- Tuition: AUD 43,800 to AUD 51,800 per year (INR 30.07 lakh to INR 35.56 lakh)
- Top scholarship: Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship, a 100% or 50% tuition reduction
- Graduate employment: #1 in Melbourne for international student graduate employment
Tuition rises each calendar year, so your commencement year fixes the published rate. Most international scholarships need no separate application form, since Deakin assesses them automatically from your admission file. Student visa applicants must also prove living-cost funds before they can study in Australia, on top of tuition.
Exchange rate used: 1 AUD = INR 68.65 as of August 2026
Admission Status: Open (Trimester 1 2027 intake). Deakin University has 2027 applications open for Trimester 1 starting March and Trimester 2 starting July. Trimester 3 2026 teaching begins on 2 November 2026, which leaves too little runway for a first student visa from India. Deakin publishes no single fixed closing date, because closing dates vary by intake and by country.

Popular Courses and Deakin Fees 2027
Deakin charges a single annual tuition figure per course, quoted for eight credit points of full-time study. Masters degrees run 1.5 to 2 years and bachelor degrees run 3 years. Fees rise at the start of each calendar year.
The figures below are the total course cost at the published 2027 first-year rate, multiplied by course length. Actual totals will be higher, because Deakin lifts rates annually. Applicants weighing an MBA in Australia should note that Deakin's Master of Business Administration is offered online only, and Australian rules bar student visas for online enrolment.

Deakin University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
The binding requirement for Indian applicants is the English language band, since Deakin sets no fixed Indian percentage cut-off.
Postgraduate Requirements
Postgraduate coursework entry rests on a completed bachelor degree plus the correct English band.
- Academic: completed bachelor degree in any discipline; 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended)
- English: IELTS 6.5 overall minimum for postgraduate coursework, aligned to CEFR C1
- Work experience: two years relevant experience unlocks the shorter 12-credit-point masters versions
- Documents: certified transcripts, degree certificate, passport and English test report
Undergraduate Requirements
Undergraduate entry maps your Class 12 result to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank equivalent.
- Academic: unadjusted ATAR of at least 50 or equivalent; Class 12 with 60% to 65% (recommended)
- English: IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 6.0 for Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Information Technology
As per Deakin's English language requirements page, IELTS 6.0 is the undergraduate floor and IELTS 6.5 the postgraduate floor. Deakin also accepts Pearson and equivalent tests, with the exact score table held in the Deakin Policy Library. Applicants who miss the band can route through the Deakin University English Language Institute instead.
Key insight: Some courses set higher English bands than the university floor, so read the entry requirements tab on your own course page before booking a test.

Deakin University Acceptance Rate 2027
Deakin University has an acceptance rate of 75% (estimated). Deakin does not publish an official admissions ratio, so this figure is derived from third-party admissions data and should be read as indicative only.
The number sits well above Australia's most selective research universities. Competitive courses in nursing, psychology and law screen harder than the institutional average suggests.
Reality check: A 75% headline does not mean an easy offer, because each course applies its own academic and English thresholds independently.

Deakin University Cost of Living 2027
A first year at Deakin runs AUD 73,510 to AUD 81,510 (INR 50.47 lakh to INR 55.96 lakh). That combines published tuition with the living-cost figure a student visa applicant must evidence.
Annual Cost of Living in Melbourne for Indian Students
Deakin publishes no cost breakdown of its own and points students to the Australian government calculator instead.
| Item | Annual (AUD) | Annual (INR lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Living costs, visa evidence floor | AUD 29,710 | 20.40 lakh |
| Student visa application charge | AUD 2,500 | 1.72 lakh |
| Overseas Student Health Cover | Quoted in your Letter of Offer | Quoted in your Letter of Offer |
As per Study Australia, student visa fees start at AUD 2,500 per application from 1 July 2026. Rent drives most of the variance, and Burwood, Box Hill and Camberwell price below the Melbourne centre. Geelong and Warrnambool sit lower again.
Insider note: The AUD 29,710 figure is a visa evidence floor, not a budget, and Melbourne renters routinely spend above it.

Deakin University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Deakin University runs four Australian campuses plus an online Cloud Campus. Melbourne Burwood is the largest and carries most international enrolment.
- Location and transport: Burwood connects to central Melbourne by tram and bus, and international students may qualify for a 50% Myki concession
- Housing: Deakin Residence offers on-campus rooms with utilities inside the weekly fee
- Regional option: Geelong Waurn Ponds hosts the Master of Cyber Security and prices below Melbourne on rent
- Student life: more than 150 clubs and societies run across campuses, alongside the Deakin University Student Association food pantry
What Indian students say: Shared rentals near Burwood undercut Melbourne city rates, and the tram link keeps commute cost predictable through the trimester.
Deakin University Scholarships 2027
Deakin University lists six international scholarships and bursaries, of which four are open to Indian applicants. Only the Vice-Chancellor's award needs a separate form.
| Scholarship | Type | Award value | Eligibility | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deakin Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship | Merit | 100% or 50% tuition reduction for the degree | High academic achievers commencing a Deakin degree | Separate application required |
| Deakin International Scholarship for Excellence | Merit | 25% tuition reduction for the degree | Consistently strong past academic record | Automatic at admission |
| Deakin International 20% Merit Scholarship | Merit | 20% tuition reduction for the degree | Commencing undergraduate or postgraduate students | Automatic at admission |
| Deakin alumni discount | Alumni | 10% reduction per unit | Deakin graduates starting a postgraduate award course | Automatic at admission |
As per the official Deakin international scholarships page, outcomes are emailed within four weeks of the closing date. The Southeast Asia Priority Bursary is restricted to Southeast Asian nationals and is closed to Indian applicants.
Planning note: A 20% merit award cuts the Master of Information Technology to AUD 36,640 a year (INR 25.15 lakh), so apply before scholarship places fill.

Deakin University Rankings 2027
Deakin University's strongest signal is subject-level, not overall. Its world position has eased from a five-year peak of #197 in QS 2025 to #227 in QS 2027.
| Ranking body | Latest edition | Previous edition | Two editions back |
|---|---|---|---|
| QS World | 2027: #227 | 2026: #207 | 2025: #197 |

Deakin University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Deakin University reports graduate employment through Australia's national Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching survey, not a private placement report.
- International outcome: #1 in Melbourne for international student graduate employment, as per the QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey 2023 to 2025
- Time to job: nine in ten Deakin graduates find work within four to six months
- Median salary: not disclosed by Deakin for international graduates
- Accreditation: Deakin Business School holds AACSB and EQUIS; IT masters degrees hold Australian Computer Society accreditation
- Career support: DeakinTALENT gives lifetime career service access to every graduate
Insider note: Australian Computer Society accreditation matters for Indian IT graduates, because it feeds skills assessment for later work visa pathways.
Deakin University vs Peer Universities
The natural comparison set is other Victorian publics plus the Australian universities Indian applicants shortlist alongside Deakin. All ranks below come from the same QS 2027 edition.
| University | QS World 2027 | Focus for Indian applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Deakin University | #227 | Nursing, education and sport science ranked far above overall position |
| Monash University | #31 | Group of Eight member, meaning one of Australia's oldest research-intensive universities |
| RMIT University | #119 | Central Melbourne campus, design and engineering weighting |
| Griffith University | #230 | Queensland base with regional post-study work advantages |
| La Trobe University | #241 | Victorian peer with comparable entry bar |
| Swinburne University of Technology | #291 | Melbourne technology focus and industry placement model |
Deakin sits mid-table on world rank but leads its Victorian peer group on international graduate employment. Its three-intake calendar also gives a faster restart than the two-semester universities above it.
Deakin University suits the Indian applicant who cares more about employment outcomes and subject strength than a headline world rank. A two-year masters here costs roughly INR 1.04 crore including living costs, and a 20% or 25% merit award trims that meaningfully before you ever apply for a student visa.
It is a weaker fit for applicants who need a top-100 name on the degree for employer screening back home. Monash sits far higher on every world table and remains in Victoria, so the trade is prestige against entry accessibility and scholarship depth.
FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students take Deakin's Master of Business Administration on a student visa?
Ans. No. Deakin's Master of Business Administration is listed with Online as its only location, and Australian government regulations prevent student visas being issued for online Deakin courses. Indian applicants who want an on-campus management degree should look at the campus-delivered business masters instead. The online route remains open to students already holding another valid visa, or studying from India without relocating.
Ques. How much of a Deakin University degree can be studied online?
Ans. International students living in Australia on a student visa must enrol in at least one campus-located unit in each compulsory trimester, meaning Trimesters 1 and 2. Online study is capped at a maximum of one third of the course, or equivalent. The single exception is a student completing their final unit, provided the one-third cap is not breached.
Ques. What is Recognition of Prior Learning at Deakin?
Ans. Recognition of Prior Learning converts earlier study or industry experience into credit, cutting both duration and total fees. You flag it on your application and submit certified copies of your previous course details. Approval is formalised before enrolment during the Enrolment and Orientation Program. For the Master of Business Administration, holders of full CPA, CA ANZ or IPA membership may receive up to six credit points.
Ques. Which English language tests does Deakin University accept besides IELTS?
Ans. Deakin accepts Pearson and other recognised tests alongside IELTS, with the full score table published in the Deakin Policy Library. Recent secondary or university study taught in English at an approved provider can also satisfy the requirement. Five years of living and working in an English-speaking country is assessed case by case. Course pages list any band above the university minimum.
Ques. Are Deakin degrees accredited by the Australian Computer Society?
Ans. Yes. The Master of Information Technology, Master of Data Science, Master of Cyber Security and Bachelor of Information Technology all carry Australian Computer Society accreditation. Each is recognised internationally for entry to professional practice through the Seoul Accord. Accreditation requires completing specific named units at Deakin, so check the unit list on your course page before substituting electives.
Ques. How does Deakin refund tuition if a student withdraws early?
Ans. Continuing international students receive a 100% refund for units dropped before the third week of trimester. Withdrawal between the third week and the census date returns 50%. Nothing is refundable after the census date. Commencing students follow a separate withdrawal and refund schedule, and census dates shift each trimester, so confirm the exact date for your teaching period.
Ques. Can Indian applicants start a Deakin University degree in Trimester 3?
Ans. Yes, Deakin runs a full November intake, and Trimester 3 2026 teaching begins on 2 November 2026. The practical constraint is visa timing rather than admission, since a first Australian student visa from India needs several weeks. Applicants reading this after mid-2026 should target Trimester 1 2027 in March. Not every course opens in Trimester 3, so check your course page.
Ques. Which Deakin campuses run the information technology masters degrees?
Ans. The Master of Information Technology and Master of Data Science run at Melbourne Burwood, with an online mode alongside. The Master of Cyber Security runs at Geelong Waurn Ponds instead, which changes both your commute and your rent baseline. Waurn Ponds prices below Melbourne on accommodation. Confirm campus availability per intake, because a course offered in Trimester 1 may not run at the same site in Trimester 3.

- I love all the things extracurricular activities, sports, teaching, practical works, and many more. There are definitely many things in this university and I will explore more as I study two more years in this university. Thanks
Dislikes
- I only dislike one thing that is the pressure of study in the first trimester. The assignment deadlines for the first trimester students is very less and the time given to explain these things up is also very less. Students like me from India or any country where assignments are not that much impactful, Will not focus more on them but here they matter alot.
Overview

It includes students from all the Nations not only from India and it provides a lot of opportunities in future as it will give me a global citizenship. My university is fun I love studying there enjoy the activities and I'm very very lucky to be in that university. Overview
I had to submit my short 300 words SoP and one long detailed SoP, and a detailed CV as well. The main reason was the ranking of this university is quite good as compared to other university and the fee structure is also affordable compared to group of eight. Also the main highlight was the course i took was accredited from Australian computer society(ACS). Overall its good but the course is challenging because i do not have background of IT and the university experience is top notch like the facilities are quite good. The lecture theatre, library, medical centre, Gym are quite good. There are many cafes and vending machine in the premises where you can get variety of food ranging from continental to indian.
Campus Life
The infrastructure is top- notch and the extra curricular activities are also there if you like to participate. There’s a student body name DUSA which mostly organizes different events on campus. They are mostly like for the student where we can be the member by paying the minimal fees and we can get lots of benefits from that.

Exercise and Sport Science courses are the top choice for the applicants. Nursing and Business were the second and third most sought-after courses, while health-related fields Psychology (Honors), Psychological Science and Biomedical Science were other top picks. Apart from these Arts, Science and Commerce and Health Sciences are also popular at Deakin University.
My friend and I applied for an account at Deakin University, Deakin State University, and then were approved. We recently got visa approval from the Australian embassy, and we plan to fly to Australia next week. Therefore, we are applying to the student dormitory at Deakin University.
