Program Description

  • St. Lawrence College offers an Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology for a duration of 3 years.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • It is a joint program between St. Lawrence College and Queen's University combines a degree and diploma in Biotechnology.
  • The Biotechnology Advanced program at St. Lawrence College is a predominantly hands-on, laboratory, and practical based course.
  • The final 15-week semester of the program is dedicated to providing a real-world learning opportunity by placing the students in a research or industrial work site as an entry-level Biotechnologist.
  • Students from health science’s programs on placement are covered by Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage in the event of an incident. 
  • Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode that combines classroom sessions with online learning activities.
  • Graduates of the Biotechnology Advanced program can turn their advanced diploma into a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Biotechnology degree in one year (two academic semesters) in Ireland at the Institute of Technology Sligo.
  • Biotechnology graduates are employed in:
    • Academic research laboratories e.g. disease and medical research, ecology, bioremediation, genomics, and proteomics
    • Commercial research, development, and production of biological products such as pharmaceuticals, foods, alcoholic beverages, bulk chemicals, and bio-pesticides
    • Microbiological, chemical, and instrumental analyses of raw materials and finished products
    • Environmental protection through waste management, detection of soil and water contaminants/pollutants, and application of bioremediation techniques. Graduates are eligible to take the OWWCO (Ontario Water/Wastewater Certification Office) exams
  • The average salary of the program goes up to 35,000 USD.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students have to complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with the following prerequisites:
    • Grade 12 English at the C or U level
    • Grade 12 Math at the C or U level, MTC4C recommended 
    • Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry at the C or U level 
    • Grade 11 or 12 Biology at the C or U level.
  • Students entering the program will have WHIMS (Workplace Hazardous Information Management System) Training prior to entering the program or within the first two weeks of the program through the college.

Indian Student Eligibility:

  • The students must have completed 10th and intermediate i.e 12th grade which has the minimum with 60% marks.
  • The minimum qualification required to attend this program is a higher secondary school certificate.
  • Copies of original documents should be attested by the educational institution.
  • School Record of Diploma/Degree certificate Mark sheets for each year of study is required.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • A Student VISA authorizes students to study in Canada legally.
  • International students will receive their Study Permits in the form of a paper document which will usually be attached to the passport at the Canadian port of entry.
  • Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), commonly called Entry Visas, are to be obtained by foreign nationals who require visas to enter Canada, while Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows foreign nationals from visa-exempted countries to enter Canada without a visa.

Work Study

The Work-Study Program allows students to take part in research-based projects. Students may work on-campus and off-campus. Students can only start working in Canada when they start their study program. There are no restrictions on the number of hours students can work on campus in addition to working off-campus.

  • During regular school semesters, students can work up to 20 hours.
  • During scheduled breaks in their school year, like during winter and summer holidays, they can work full-time.
  • Students can’t work during a break that comes before the student start their very first school semester.
  • If their program doesn’t have scheduled academic breaks, students can’t work more than 20 hours per week.
