Toronto Metropolitan University Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at TMU has two layers: academic thresholds (Class XII marks for UG, four-year bachelor’s for PG) and English-language proficiency scores. The floors are institutional minimums; individual programs in Engineering, Business and Computer Science admit competitively and often need higher marks. English requirements come from the university’s dedicated language proficiency policy.

  • UG academic: Class XII with high standing on CBSE, ISC or a State Board, with the subject prerequisites for the chosen faculty (Mathematics for Engineering, CS and Business; Physics and Chemistry for Engineering).
  • UG competitive floor: Ted Rogers Business, Engineering, Architectural Science and Computer Science typically look for Class XII in the 75 to 85 percent range.
  • PG academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution with a minimum B or 3.0/4.33 in the last two years of study.
  • PhD academic: Master’s degree with a minimum B+ or 3.33/4.33.
  • MBA academic: Four-year bachelor’s with 3.0/4.33 (B) or higher in the final two years.
Test UG minimum PG (general) MBA, Journalism, Psychology

PTE Academic 60 63 68 to 72
Duolingo English Test 120 130 140

Toronto Metropolitan University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

TMU exempts applicants from English testing under three main pathways, and Indian applicants who studied at English-medium institutions can qualify under the postsecondary route. The waiver is discretionary and needs supporting documentation from your prior institution.

  • Postgraduate waiver: Indian applicants who completed 2+ years of full-time postsecondary study at a recognised English-medium institution (Canadian university or a country where English is the primary language of instruction) can be exempt.
  • Documentation: An official letter from the registrar confirming English was the sole medium of instruction throughout the qualifying study.
  • Undergraduate waiver: Applicants who finished four years of full-time secondary study in an exempt country. India is not on the exempt-country list, so most Indian school-leavers still submit an IELTS or TOEFL score.
  • Not accepted alone: Canadian college coursework alone does not qualify; the letter must confirm English as the sole medium of instruction.

Toronto Metropolitan University Application Process

International applicants apply through the TMU International Application, which routes both undergraduate and graduate international files. Undergraduate applicants may alternatively file through OUAC 105 (Ontario’s central undergraduate platform), but the university’s own guide recommends the TMU International Application for Winter entry.

  1. Confirm your program is open on the international program status page, then start your file on the TMU International Application portal. Pay the application fee of C$150 (₹10,341) on submission.
  2. Undergraduate applicants using OUAC 105 pay C$156 (₹10,754) instead - this is the OUAC platform fee, and TMU does not charge a separate fee on top.
  3. Receive email acknowledgement plus login credentials for the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal within a few business days.
  4. Upload documents in the ChooseTMU portal: certified transcripts, English proficiency score, SOP or statement of interest, LORs, financial documents, passport bio page.
  5. Complete any program-specific pieces (portfolio, audition, video interview via Kira Talent for MBA, essays for Journalism).
  6. Track your file in ChooseTMU. Whitelist noreply@torontomu.ca so decision emails are not missed.
  7. Receive an offer on a rolling basis. Accept in the portal, pay the tuition deposit and request the Letter of Acceptance for your study permit application.

Toronto Metropolitan University Admission Decisions Timeline

TMU releases decisions on a rolling basis after each application is complete. Applicants who file early in the cycle usually see a decision faster than those who file near the priority date.

  • Offer timing: Typically 2 to 6 weeks after a complete file (including all documents and non-academic requirements) reaches the ChooseTMU portal.
  • MBA offers: Two to four weeks after the video interview and committee review.
  • Acceptance deadline: Specified on the offer letter; usually three to four weeks to accept and pay the deposit.
  • Conditional offers: Possible when Class XII or bachelor’s results are pending, or IELTS/TOEFL scores are still to be submitted.
  • Deferral: May be granted case-by-case; request through the ChooseTMU portal after accepting the offer.

Toronto Metropolitan University Documents Required

Document upload happens inside the ChooseTMU Applicant Portal after your file is created. All documents in a language other than English must be uploaded in the original language plus a certified or notarised literal English translation.

  • Passport bio page - clear scan.
  • Class XII transcripts and certificate (UG applicants) with the original school seal and stamp.
  • Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (PG applicants), certified by the issuing institution.
  • Master’s transcripts and degree certificate (PhD applicants), certified by the issuing institution.
  • English proficiency score report sent officially from the testing body (IELTS TRF, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo, CAEL).
  • Statement of Interest or SOP - length varies by program; 500 words for MBA.
  • Letters of Recommendation - two for MBA (one professional, one academic); two academic for most PG and PhD; program-specific counts otherwise.
  • Updated CV or resume (PG, MBA, PhD applicants).
  • Work experience letters (MBA) confirming role, dates and full-time status.
  • Portfolio, audition tape, essay or supplementary form for Grades-Plus and creative programs.
  • Financial documents for the study permit stage (bank statements, GIC receipt, tuition payment proof).

Toronto Metropolitan University Acceptance Rate

Toronto Metropolitan University does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place the overall acceptance rate at 60 to 80 percent, based on competitive-intake program patterns. As a comprehensive research university (ranked #10 in Maclean’s 2026 comprehensive category and rising rapidly in the QS World University Rankings, from #711-720 in 2026 to #669 in 2027), TMU operates an access-oriented but selective admissions model — most qualified applicants who meet published minimums see an offer, but competitive programs cap admits.

Toronto Metropolitan University Selectivity by Program

Selectivity varies sharply by program. Ted Rogers Business, Engineering, Architectural Science and Computer Science tighten their intake because seat counts are fixed and demand runs high.

  • Engineering and Architectural Science: Class XII floors sit around 80 to 85 percent for shortlisting; the Faculty’s international priority date closes early (December).
  • Ted Rogers Business: Competitive at Class XII 78 to 85 percent with strong English and Math.
  • Ted Rogers MBA: Selective - average admitted class carries 5 to 7 years of professional experience despite the 2-year minimum.
  • Master of Digital Media (MDM): Portfolio-driven and cohort-capped; among the more selective PG offerings.
  • Arts, Community Services, general Science: Higher admission likelihood at the institutional academic floor.

Canada Student Visa Process for Toronto Metropolitan University

Indian students admitted to Toronto Metropolitan University need a Canadian Study Permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Apply once you hold the Letter of Acceptance from TMU and the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) that TMU issues with the LOA. The Study Permit application fee is C$150 (₹10,341); biometrics add C$85 (₹5,860).

Indian applicants can use the standard Study Permit stream or the faster Student Direct Stream (SDS), which typically processes in around 20 calendar days for eligible files. SDS eligibility for Indian applicants includes: proof of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of C$20,635 (₹14.22 Lakhs), first-year tuition paid in full, IELTS Academic 6.0 in each band (or equivalent), and the LOA plus PAL from TMU. Standard-stream files without SDS can take 8 to 16 weeks depending on the visa office load. Submit biometrics at a VFS Canada centre in India within two weeks of applying. On arrival in Canada, register with TMU International Student Support and apply for a Social Insurance Number before starting any co-op or part-time work.

2026 update: Ontario requires a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) with every Study Permit application. TMU issues the PAL alongside the LOA to admitted international students within the institution’s federal cap allocation, so do not file the Study Permit without both documents in hand.

Toronto Metropolitan University combines an access-oriented admissions model with sharply competitive Engineering, Business and MBA programs, and its two-intake calendar gives Indian applicants both a September and a January entry point. File early on the TMU International Application portal, treat the C$150 fee and PAL requirement as non-negotiable steps, and check program-specific priority dates rather than the general date.

Overview

TMU is the only university in North America that offers a business-savvy bachelor's program. Creative Industries is a highly unique program that allows students to choose a specialization from among 12 industry modules. My overall experience at TMU has been fun, educational and exciting. The combination of rigorous academics, supportive faculty, vibrant campus life, and excellent internship opportunities has prepared me well for my future career in the creative industries.

Overview

I chose this university because it’s one of the best post-secondary schools for business and entrepreneurship, which is something I am truly passionate about. They also had a very good co-op and job opportunity, which was a great opportunity for me to select my business management program. I think my overall experience was better than I had actually imagined as I got to make friends pretty quick within my course activities and the events that attended that suited my interests. I’d like to have more in person classes, so I can use the full amenities provided at the school like the gym, library, and arena.

Scholarship

I have received a bursary scholarship of $1100 on my first year behalf of my university. TMU normally provides bursaries to students who need extra support for school supplies, transportation, or any other special needs.

Overview

The University of Toronto doesn't have a 2-year, part-time undergraduate program and most computer-science-related programs do not accept college transcripts and York University has never got back to my inquiry. Ryerson has a good, safe location, very accessible to malls, qualified professors, school's credibility, and flexibility in programs and schedules. However, it is not as prominent as the University of Toronto

Scholarship

I used to get some scholarships when I was in college. When I applied to the university, I was an international student, but when the semester starts, I have a permanent residency and I get OSAP. 100% of my OSAP for the first year is a grant, which means the first year was free and I even had some extra money for my Macbook Air.

Overview

I chose Ryerson University as I was really impressed by the courses offered for my program (Computer Science). The courses look very interesting and the syllabus is updated, unlike other universities which have outdated structures. I also preferred the location of Ryerson university, as its at the heart of Toronto, in downtown. I heard a lot of positive thing about professors and faculties at Ryerson, so did not hesitate and so far its been amazing.

Overview

I ideally wanted to go to university close to home. out of the 3 well known universities around me, Ryerson was the only one that stood out the most to me because of its business faculty. The location of the university is in the heart of downtown Toronto which gives me good job opportunities closer to the school. Ryerson is also a university which promotes diversity which is very important to me personally.

Overview

It was the closest for me to commute to. I like that it was downtown because everything is walking distance. In a way, I like how it didn't feel like a university, but a high school. In terms of application fee, it was reasonable. I applied to 2 other universities in addition to Ryerson. I was a honour student in 12th grade.

Scholarship

Yes. I had to apply to OSAP for a loan. In addition, I work on campus to make some extra money on the side for my travel expenses. On top of that, I have also applied to some scholarships.

Overview

Because I like the program they offer and have the best campus and a lot more. Another reason it's great to go to Ryerson if you love City life and chillax at downtown, it's not that safe but yea with limitations and being legal to do anything is considered fine. To get into my program I needed OSSD.
