Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is a French-medium public research university in downtown Montreal, established in 1969. As a founding member of the Université du Québec network, ranked #951-1000 in QS World University Rankings 2027, UQAM anchors francophone higher education across arts, management, communication and social sciences.

The university runs over 260 programmes through seven faculties, with nearly all coursework delivered in French. Popular choices for Indian applicants include the MBA at ESG UQAM, master’s in computer science, and communication tracks, with entry each September (Fall) and January (Winter). Applicants comparing tracks can also see the MS universities in Canada guide for regional alternatives.

  • QS World Ranking (Université du Québec network): #951-1000 (QS 2027)
  • Acceptance rate: 50% (estimated)
  • Primary intakes: September (Fall) and January (Winter)
  • Application fee: CAD 155 (INR 0.11 lakh), covers three programme choices

Automatic differential-fee exemptions for full-time PhD candidates and per-trimester waivers for master’s students bring international bills toward Quebec-resident rates. Graduates on a valid study permit qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to three years. Montreal’s cost of living stays below Toronto and Vancouver, keeping UQAM among the most affordable French-medium research universities in Canada.

Exchange rate used: 1 CAD = INR 68.42 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Closing Soon (Winter 2027 intake). International applications for the Winter 2027 intake close on 15 September 2026, giving Indian applicants under three weeks to submit certified transcripts and a valid French test score. The next cycle, for Fall 2027 entry, is expected to open October 2026 (based on the prior cycle) and closes on 1 March 2027 for international applicants under rolling review.

UQAM Courses and Fees at Université du Québec à Montréal 2027

UQAM sets international tuition per credit and revises rates each academic year; the figures below reflect published 2026-2027 annual international bands. Standard master’s programmes span two years across four to six trimesters, while doctoral programmes run three to four years. Automatic exemptions (detailed in the Scholarships section) can reduce international bills toward Quebec-resident rates.

Uniform base bands apply to most master’s programmes; ESG UQAM management tracks and professional master’s carry the upper band, and effective bills fall when the trimester exemption is confirmed by the faculty.

Université du Québec à Montréal Admission 2027

UQAM admits international students to three intakes each year, with Fall (September) as the primary intake for most programmes and Winter (January) opening a smaller subset; Summer is limited to specific tracks. The full document checklist and step-by-step process is covered in the Admissions silo.

Université du Québec à Montréal Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants must meet UQAM’s schooling-year threshold, an academic band, and a recognised French test; English proficiency is required only for the small set of English-taught electives.

  • Academic (PG): Bachelor’s degree (16 years of schooling) with 55% or CGPA 5.5 out of 10 (recommended); ESG UQAM management tracks recommend 60% or CGPA 6.0 out of 10.
  • French test (mandatory for French-taught programmes): TCF 800+, TEF 400+, DELF B2 (50+), EDL 45+ or Bright 2.5+; results valid two years before the intended term. Scores below the direct-admission band lead to conditional admission with a French remedial course.
  • Credential evaluation: UQAM uses in-house evaluation; WES is not required, though certified French or English translations of Indian transcripts are mandatory.
  • Language and immigration (all applicants): Quebec Certificate of Acceptance (CAQ) and IRCC study permit; PGWP applicants need CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French, detailed on the Canada English test scores reference.

Key insight: IELTS or TOEFL alone will not unlock UQAM’s French-taught catalogue; the roughly 260-programme catalogue lists fewer than 20 fully English-taught options, so a booked French test is a non-negotiable checklist item for the September and January intakes.

Université du Québec à Montréal Acceptance Rate 2027

UQAM does not publish an institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place the figure at 50% (estimated), consistent with UQAM’s stated mission as an access-oriented public university that admits most applicants meeting its academic and French thresholds.

Selectivity varies sharply by faculty: ESG UQAM’s MBA and quantitative master’s are more competitive than social sciences and arts, and doctoral admission depends on securing a supervisor before applying. Applicants meeting the recommended academic band and clearing the direct-admission French threshold have a materially higher chance than the headline number suggests.

Reality check: The 50% figure is a modelled estimate, not an official UQAM disclosure; Indian applicants without confirmed French proficiency or supervisor contact effectively face a much lower conversion, regardless of the headline number.

UQAM Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027

Total annual outlay for an international student at UQAM sits at roughly CAD 43,770 to CAD 58,479 (INR 29.94 to 40.01 lakh) covering tuition and living in Montreal, before waivers are applied.

Applicants targeting technical tracks can compare pricing against the broader MS in CS in Canada pool, where average annual bills sit closer to CAD 40,000.

Insider note: The Plateau-Mont-Royal and Rosemont neighbourhoods (10-15 minutes to campus by metro) offer 1BHK rents in the CAD 900 to 1,200 range, well below the downtown average and where most UQAM international students actually live.

Université du Québec à Montréal Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UQAM’s main campus sits in the Quartier Latin of downtown Montreal, wrapped around Place-des-Arts and Berri-UQAM metro stations, integrated directly with the city’s underground pedestrian network.

  • Location and transit: Two connected campus clusters (Central and Sciences) served by three metro stations; students use STM monthly passes at CAD 100.
  • Housing: UQAM residences (Résidences universitaires UQAM) charge CAD 600 to 950 per month, with no guarantee for international students; most opt for off-campus shared apartments in the Plateau or Rosemont districts.
  • Signature facility: Cœur des sciences complex hosts research labs and public science programming, and the Bibliothèque centrale carries 3 million+ volumes across 4 site libraries.
  • Indian community: Small but active; Indian students cluster in ESG UQAM and informatique, with informal cohorts around the Bharat Bhavan and Concordia’s shared cultural networks.

What Indian students say: French is used inside classrooms and administration; English carries you socially and in group work with international peers but not in supervisor emails. The Plateau and Villeray neighbourhoods are the most common student housing zones.

Planning note: The SICI Quebec-India route (15 Master’s + 14 PhD slots) is the strongest India-specific opportunity, but the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute application window in India runs separately from UQAM’s admission cycle. Indians targeting SICI should apply to UQAM by December of the preceding year to align both timelines.

Université du Québec à Montréal Rankings 2027

UQAM is not ranked as a standalone institution by QS, THE or US News since 2018; its research output is consolidated under the Université du Québec network for QS World University Rankings, currently placed at #951-1000 in QS 2027.

Ranking BodyLatest EditionNotes
QS World (Université du Québec network, includes UQAM)2027: #951-1000Federated rank; UQAM contributes but is not scored separately

[Source: QS Top Universities, Times Higher Education, US News Best Global Universities]

For Indian applicants, the federated QS placement matters less than employer recognition inside Quebec and the francophone world; UQAM is a Designated Learning Institution recognised by IRCC, meaning its degrees fully qualify for the PGWP and Quebec’s PEQ residency track.

Key insight: Rank position is a weak signal for UQAM’s real value proposition; the university’s public-mission and access-oriented character is why tuition, waivers and the Quebec-India provincial pipeline are what should drive an Indian applicant’s decision, not a headline ranking.

Université du Québec à Montréal Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UQAM does not publish a centralised placement report; outcomes are tracked at the faculty level, with ESG UQAM (management) and informatique (computer science) posting the strongest hiring pipelines for international graduates in the Montreal ecosystem.

  • Placement rate: Not centrally disclosed; ESG UQAM reports strong post-graduation hiring inside Quebec-based management roles.
  • Median starting salary (Montreal PG-level, market data): CAD 55,000 to 75,000 (INR 37.63 to 51.32 lakh) per year for management and CS graduates (market median, not UQAM-disclosed).
  • Representative employers: Quebec public sector, Radio-Canada, CGI, Ubisoft, Desjardins, Bombardier, Bell Media and municipal Montreal agencies dominate hiring for francophone graduates.
  • Post-study work: PGWP valid up to 3 years for eligible programmes; Quebec’s PEQ track offers a fast-tracked residency pathway for French-proficient graduates, with detail on the Canada PR requirements guide.
  • Alumni notes: UQAM alumni include multiple Quebec cabinet ministers, Cirque du Soleil creative leadership, and Bharti Group’s Quebec representation.

Insider note: Employer recognition of UQAM is strongest inside Quebec and the wider francophone job market; Indian graduates targeting Anglophone Canada (Toronto, Vancouver) often find recruiters weigh French-language competency and Quebec references more than the UQAM degree itself.

Université du Québec à Montréal vs Peer Universities

The peer set compares UQAM against Montreal’s three other major research universities and one cross-country francophone benchmark, on QS 2027 rank, annual PG fee and positioning.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (CAD)Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh)Differentiator
Université du Québec à Montréal#951-1000 (federated via UdQ)CAD 21,770 to 30,47914.89 to 20.85 lakhLowest tuition among Montreal French-taught research universities

Université Laval (Quebec City)Verify at ranking siloCAD 25,000 to 28,000 (estimated)17.11 to 19.16 lakh (estimated)Broader French-taught STEM and larger campus

Where UQAM stands out is the combination of the lowest French-medium tuition band in Montreal, automatic differential-fee waivers at PhD and per-trimester exemptions at Master’s level, and a dedicated Indian-national bilateral pathway through SICI that few peers replicate. Applicants weighing test-heavy admissions should also see the entrance exams for Canada reference before finalising a shortlist.

Université du Québec à Montréal is the right fit for an Indian applicant with functional French (or willingness to reach B2), targeting management, communication, computer science or social sciences at a public-mission university where the two-year investment stays under INR 42 lakh and often lower after waivers. The strongest edge is the Quebec-India SICI pipeline plus a three-year PGWP that reads as a real ROI anchor against a CAD 60,000+ market median for Montreal PG-level graduates.

UQAM is not the right fit for applicants who need English-medium instruction, chase global QS top-500 signalling for CV weight in India, or want a large campus placement cell. Those students should look at Concordia University for English-medium alternatives with comparable Montreal exposure.

Université du Québec à Montréal FAQs

Ques. Does UQAM offer any English-taught degree programmes for Indian students?

Ans. UQAM is a French-medium public university, and fewer than 20 of its 260-plus programmes are fully English-taught. English-taught electives exist inside select management and international-studies tracks at ESG UQAM, but the degree language of record remains French. Indian applicants who cannot reach TCF 800, TEF 400 or DELF B2 should not apply to French-taught programmes without a remedial-French pathway.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UQAM?

Ans. Yes. IRCC allows international students on a valid study permit to work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. UQAM’s downtown location gives access to Quebec public sector, media and services roles, with francophone customer-facing positions paying CAD 16 to 22 per hour. Work does not require a separate permit and is authorised through the study permit itself.

Ques. Is GRE or GMAT required for master’s admission at UQAM?

Ans. Neither GRE nor GMAT is a universal requirement at UQAM. GMAT is preferred (not mandatory) for the full-time MBA and select ESG UQAM tracks, and Indian applicants with a strong bachelor’s grade and functional French are often admitted without either. Doctoral candidates are evaluated on academic record, research proposal and supervisor endorsement rather than standardised tests. Verify the specific programme page before booking a test.

Ques. What is the UQAM application fee for Indian applicants?

Ans. UQAM charges a non-refundable application fee of CAD 155 (INR 0.11 lakh) covering up to three programme choices at the undergraduate level or two at the graduate level. Payment is credit-card only and processed at the point of online submission. There is no fee waiver for Indian applicants, but the single fee unlocking multiple programme choices makes it materially cheaper than applying to McGill or Concordia separately.

Ques. Do Indian education loan providers recognise UQAM as an eligible institution?

Ans. Yes. UQAM is a Designated Learning Institution recognised by IRCC, and it appears on the approved lists of major Indian education lenders including State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI Bank and Auxilo. Loan-eligible cost includes tuition, living, French test fees and airfare. Public-sector lenders typically ask for a Canadian I-20 equivalent (CAQ plus letter of acceptance) and margin funding of 10 to 15%.

Ques. How does UQAM verify Indian academic transcripts and degrees?

Ans. UQAM uses in-house academic evaluation and does not require WES or ICAS credential reports. Indian applicants must submit certified true copies of Class 10, Class 12 and bachelor’s transcripts, translated into French or English by a certified translator. Original mark sheets must be sent by post if selected for admission, and consular apostille is not required for Indian documents at the initial application stage.

Ques. Can UQAM international students bring dependents on a study permit?

Ans. Yes. Spouses of full-time UQAM master’s or doctoral students can apply for an open work permit valid for the duration of the study permit; children can accompany as dependents and access Quebec public schools free of charge. Financial proof of CAD 20,635 for the student plus CAD 4,000 for a spouse and CAD 3,000 per child is required at the study-permit stage under 2026 IRCC rules.

Ques. What is the refund policy if an Indian student withdraws from UQAM?

Ans. UQAM applies Quebec’s provincial refund grid: full tuition refund minus a CAD 100 administrative charge if withdrawal is filed before the first trimester deadline (typically end of the second week of classes). After the deadline, refund tapers to 50%, then 0% by mid-trimester. Study-permit refusal from IRCC before the term begins triggers a full refund minus the application fee.

To study in Canada without a passport, first obtain one from your country's government. Then, research Canadian visa requirements and apply for a study permit or visa after securing acceptance from a Canadian institution.

I wish to know if I could deposit for admission at my preferred school using my National Identity Card and get the passport shortly.

Unfortunately, you are using a National Identity Card (NIC) to deposit for admission at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM), and obtaining a passport shortly after is not likely to be successful. However, you can explore the UQAM courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.
