Established in 1981, the University of Quebec in Outaouais (UQO) is a subsidiary of the provincially run Canadian Public University of Quebec. It is the only University in Canada to offer degrees in Heritage, Museology, and French Comic Strip Writing. It is also the only Quebec University to conduct a degree program in French Writing and Translation.

The university has two campuses: the main campus at Gatineau and a satellite campus at Saint-Jérôme. Gatineau is located near Ottawa and is part of the National Capital Region and hence also enjoys unique and modern opportunities.

Residence and Accommodation

  • UQO offers on-campus accommodation for students in economical, self-contained and furnished residences.
  • Accommodation charges include essentials like power, heating, internet, and cable television connectivity.
  • Ease of transport is a major plus for on-campus accommodation.

There are two types of residences:

  1. UQO Townhouses- These can accommodate about 126 people in 2-bedroom apartments and studios; and
  2. Tache Residences that can house 92 people in 3 or 4 bedroom apartments.
  • Owing to the limited number of accommodation, seats are allotted on a first-come-first-served basis. Students should request for on-campus accommodation as soon as admission is confirmed.

All you need to know about the Application Process

In order to seek admission in University of Quebec in Outaouais, candidates must fulfil the following requirements:

Documents required (common to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs)

  • The UQO Admission Application form (Online/Paper) and the requisite Admission Fee.
  • Original Official transcripts of all academic qualifications.
  • Photocopy of birth certificate or passport or National Identity card.

Documents required (specifically for postgraduate programs)

  • Three letters of recommendation in the specified format.
  • Original official employment certificates.
  • A Statement of Purpose.
  • An updated resume.
  • ETS International French Test (TFI) score of minimum 750 out of 990.

Please note:

  • A curriculum vitae and portfolio of completed works for specific courses like Visual Arts, Comics, Graphic Design etc. have to be submitted.
    1. Applicants for undergraduate studies need to qualify the UQO French Test to fulfill the language proficiency criteria for admissions.

How, when and where to apply?

  • For Fall 2018, international students can start applying from November 2017 onwards. Applications will be accepted until September 2018.
  • Prospective students can apply online through the University website in the following steps:
    1. Choose your program
    2. Review the chosen program’s Entry Requirements and Application Deadlines
    3. Fill the Online Application for Admission
    4. Prepare and Send the Required Documents for Admission
    5. Check on your online application for Response from the University
    6. Accept/Reject the offer of admission

Application Fee

  • International applicants must pay a non-refundable admission fee of $30 CAD or $60 CAD for online and paper application respectively.
  • The fee can be remitted to the university by certified check or money order, drawn on a Canadian Bank and payable to the UQO; or by IMO in Canadian currency.

What after the admission is confirmed?

  • Students need to apply for Study Permit from the IRCC and obtain the CAQ from the MIDI department of the Government of Quebec as soon as confirmation of admission is received from the University.
  • Request for on-campus residence should also be placed in the residence co-ordination office at UQO.

Options to work while study

University of Quebec in Outaouais gives you an option to work while study, co-op programs and paid internships to easily fund education or otherwise.

On Campus

  • Under the Work-Study program, full-time UQO students with a consistent average of 2.2 GPA can work part-time on-campus.

Co-Op Programs and Paid Internships:

  • Several programs at UQO has integrated practical training within the program tenure that allows the students to gain relevant practical exposure and get paid for the experience as well.
  • Students of Masters in Project Management can complete two paid internships, while students of a select few bachelor's degree programs can avail of three, each being of a minimum of 12 weeks’ duration.
  • UQO also has a selection of programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, that integrates paid organizational internships.

Please note:

  • In order to be able to work in Canada while studying, international students need to possess a valid study permit, a social insurance number or SIN and should be registered in a full-time program.
  • Beyond the academic curriculum, students can opt to work on-campus/off-campus jobs, up to 20 hours per week during regular study terms and 40 hours during vacations.
