Program Description

  • The University of Alberta offers an Executive MBA for a duration of 20 months.
  • It is cohort-based and a lock-step program offered on a full-time basis.
  • The executive MBA program provides students with a superior business education with opportunities to put concepts into practice and maximize their leadership potential. 
  • The major components of the Executive MBA program are:
    • Financial Accounting and Marketing
    • Data Analysis and Decision Making
    • Finance, Corporate Strategy, and Leadership
    • Management of Technology and Innovation
    • Managing Human Resources and Business Economics
  • Students have to complete a core set of courses, study tour, a year-long capstone project, and 2 elective courses.
  • All classes are delivered face-to-face at the University of Alberta.
  • The courses are sequenced to sharpen student's knowledge and understanding of the key functional areas of management such as finance, marketing, and operations management.  
  • The student-faculty ratio of the Executive MBA program is 9:1.
  • Students have to attend 2 more week-long intensive courses and 16 regular courses held over 4-day blocks from September to April each year and have a break from classes over the summer months in June or July.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have a 4-year undergraduate degree from a recognized institution.
  • Students should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B Grade) on a 4.0 grading scale over the last 2 years of study.

Work Experience Eligibility:

  • The most important entrance requirement for the Executive MBA program is the professional work experience.
  • The university values diverse and unique experience in terms of position and industry and students must have supervisory or management experience.
  • On average, Executive MBA students have 15 years of progressively responsible experience, with a significant portion of that experience being at the senior leader level.
  • Education, volunteer experience, accomplishments achieved at work, and any extracurricular activities should also be included in work experience.


Students without related academic experience or work experience students are also encouraged to apply, given they have to fulfil the following requirements:

Students who do not have a UG degree from a recognized institution or have a UG degree with less than 60% or GPA 7 out of 10 are required to write the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Complete a 4-year UG degree from a recognized institution with 60% First Class Standing/Division.
  • Or have secured a GPA of 3.0/4.0 (B Grade) in the recent 2-years of full-time study.

Submission of GMAT and GRE scores is important for this program and it is recommended to submit the GMAT score (above 500) and GRE score (minimum 300) for a better chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work and/or volunteer experience.
  • Official Transcript: Submit copies of an official transcript from post-secondary institutions attended in PDF format.
  • Official Degree Certificate: It provides proof of degree completion and must be an original copy issued by the institution with an official stamp or seal.
  • Two Letter of Reference: The online application system will notify the references and allow the student to upload their letters. Letters can be academic or business references.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL or other test scores.
  • Standardized Test score: The Executive Assessment (EA) is designed to evaluate student’s business school readiness based on career experience and helps admissions teams understand how to best support their success.
