The University of Toronto launched the President’s Impact Scholarship Program on October 5, 2026. The scheme is open to Indian applicants eyeing the Fall 2027 doctoral intake at Toronto. President Melanie Woodin confirmed $80,000 CAD (₹53.82 lakhs) a year for each selected scholar. The $100 million (₹ 700 crore) fund sits above U of T’s base PhD stipend floor.

  • At least 12 PhD scholars are picked each cycle. Each receives $320,000 CAD  (₹2.24 crore) across four years.
  • Applications open in late Fall 2026. The first cohort begins in September 2027.
  • Each scholar gets two supervisors from different disciplines. An external placement with government, industry, or an international partner is mandatory.

It combines a $50 million (₹ 350 crore)anonymous donation with $50 million (₹ 350 crore) from U of T. It is the largest doctoral scholarship pool of its kind in Canada.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use $ 1 = ₹ 67.29, the live rate on 19 Oct 2026.

Who Qualifies for the President's Impact Scholarship?

The call is open to doctoral applicants from Canada and overseas, including India. Candidates must first apply to a U of T PhD programme. Only then can faculty nominate them for the scholarship cohort.

U of T’s announcement names three evaluation anchors:

  • Academic excellence across prior degrees, grades, and research output.
  • A track record of innovation shown through published work, patents, or research projects.
  • Real-world problem-solving ability matched to the year’s cohort theme.

Indian applicants need a master’s degree from a recognised university. Each cohort chases a single theme like AI and Health. Sovereignty and the Arctic is another named example.

What it means for Indian Students: You cannot apply to the scholarship on its own. The PhD admission has to be live first. The scholarship rides on top of the standard graduate application.

How Much Will Indian PhD Scholars Receive?

The headline $80,000 (₹53.82 lakhs) is the annual stipend. Tuition and research costs sit on top via departmental packages.

Head CAD INR
Annual stipend $80,000 ₹56 lakh
Monthly take $6,667 ₹4.67 lakh
Four-year total $320,000 ₹2.24 crore
Programme pool $100 million ₹700 crore

The figure sits above Canada’s Vanier Scholarship of $50,000 (₹ 33.64 lakhs) a year. It also doubles U of T’s base PhD guarantee of $40,000 (₹26.91 lakhs) a year. The Faculty of Information currently uses that lower floor.

Key Insight: ₹56 lakh a year beats Toronto’s living cost estimate of up to $30,000 (₹20.18 lakhs). The surplus can clear a self-funded master’s loan while the PhD runs.

When Do Applications Open for the 2027 Cohort?

The university has set three fixed dates for the first cycle:

  • October 5, 2026: programme announced, graduate departments informed.
  • Late Fall 2026: application call opens via the School of Graduate Studies.
  • September 2027: the inaugural cohort begins doctoral work on campus.

U of T has not yet named the exact application deadline. Indian applicants should align the PhD submission with each department’s December-January window. Vice-Provost Trevor Young led the programme design.

How Does the Scholarship Compare to Other PhD Funding?

U of T already runs the Connaught International Scholarship and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. Dean of Graduate Studies Joshua Barker said the Impact Scholarship adds three distinct layers.

Each scholar gets:

  • Two co-supervisors drawn from different disciplines, not one department.
  • A mandatory external placement, which can be a government partnership, international placement, or industry internship.
  • Cohort-wide collaboration across one theme like AI and Health.

The structure signals a shift away from the single-supervisor PhD. It brings U of T closer to peer universities in the US and UK. The funding scale now matches those research systems.

The $100 million (₹ 700 crore) fund marks the largest doctoral scholarship pool in Canada. The late Fall 2026 application call is the next trigger date. Indian students eyeing the ₹2.24 crore grant should finalise test scores soon. Supervisor contacts in different departments are the next priority.

Action Plan for Indian Applicants

  1. Shortlist two or three U of T PhD programmes under the cohort themes.
  2. Lock an IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100 score before the Fall 2026 submission window.
  3. Contact at least two prospective supervisors across different departments, since the scholarship needs co-supervision.
  4. Prepare a research statement that names a real-world outcome, not just an academic question.
  5. Watch the School of Graduate Studies page for the application call opening.

Next Key Date for 2027 Applicants: The School of Graduate Studies will open the application call in late Fall 2026. The inaugural cohort begins in September 2027. Track the U of T graduate portal weekly from November 2026.
