Vancouver Island University offers 600+ scholarships, of which 40+ are directly accessible to Indian applicants. The Nanaimo-based public university (VIU) distributed CAD 4.7 million (INR 32.16 Crores) in student funding across 2025 to 2026.

Indian undergraduates typically stack the International Student Entrance Scholarship with GPA-linked awards from year two onwards.

  • Standard UG tuition: CAD 17,269 to 25,119 per year (INR 11.82 to 17.19 Lakhs)
  • With entrance scholarship applied: Effective UG cost drops to CAD 12,269 to 20,119 per year (INR 8.40 to 13.77 Lakhs)
  • With entrance award plus year-two GPA scholarship: Effective UG cost from CAD 9,769 per year (INR 6.68 Lakhs)
  • Next entrance award window: October 15, 2026 to February 28, 2027 for Fall 2027 intake

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 CAD = INR 68.42 as of August 2026. GPA refers to Grade Point Average on a 4.00 scale; SAB stands for Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries, the single common form VIU uses for current-student awards.

Vancouver Island University Scholarships for UG Students

VIU funds 40+ entrance awards each academic cycle for incoming undergraduates, with 20 slots reserved exclusively for international students. Indian applicants receive academic review at admission only if the entrance award form is submitted alongside the program application.

An Indian UG applicant with 85% plus in Class 12 board results has a realistic shot at the International Student Entrance Scholarship. VIU limits automatic consideration for entrance awards, so a separate application form is mandatory before the February deadline.

Reddit Insight: Indian VIU students report the SAB profile is the single most valuable action in first September, since 600 donor awards share one common form.

Vancouver Island University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

VIU offers three Master’s tracks that Indian applicants pursue: MBA, MEd (Educational Leadership) and Master of Community Planning. Funding depth is thinner than at UG level, so most Master’s students combine an entrance award with the SAB pool.

The Dr. Jixin Xu MBA award is the highest-value dedicated PG entrance scholarship at VIU. Indian MBA candidates with a first-class Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university are the typical profile shortlisted for this single slot.

Reddit Insight: Indian MEd cohorts on Nanaimo campus note donor bursaries under Faculty of Education are often undersubscribed. A concise statement of financial need frequently wins CAD 1,500 to 2,500 (INR 1.03 to 1.71 Lakhs) in the second semester.

Compare admission requirements against the fee outlay in the VIU admissions guide for Indian PG applicants.

India-Specific Scholarships at Vancouver Island University

VIU does not run a dedicated "India Only" scholarship line on its main awards portal. Three funding routes function as India-priority pipelines in practice, with the International Student Entrance Scholarship acting as the primary vehicle.

RouteEffective Award (CAD)Amount (INR)How Indians Access ItTiming
International Student Entrance Scholarship (India-priority slot)C$5,000INR 3.42 LakhsApply via VIU Entrance Awards form before February 28, 2027Announced March or April 2027

India ranks among VIU’s largest single source countries for international students, with 125+ Indian nationals enrolled across the four campuses. This scale means program-level peer bursaries and referral awards circulate through the Indian Students’ Association each semester.

Vancouver Island University PhD Scholarships

VIU is a primarily undergraduate and Master’s teaching university, so it does not directly award PhD degrees or PhD-level entrance scholarships. Indian VIU alumni typically move to top Canadian research universities (Toronto, UBC, McGill, McMaster) for doctoral funding.

Doctoral PathwayAward (CAD)Amount (INR)How VIU Alumni Access ItDeadline (tentative)

Indian VIU Master’s students planning a PhD elsewhere in Canada should register a supervisor recommendation letter with the receiving school by August 2026. That lands before the November CGRS-D nomination window. The nomination quota rests with the PhD-granting school, not VIU.

External Government Scholarships for Vancouver Island University Students

Six external funding sources add meaningful top-ups for Indian VIU students. Federal Canadian awards and India-Canada bilateral awards form the two main clusters.

For Indian PG applicants specifically, three external options rank highest by combined value and accessibility:

  • CGRS-D: Highest cash value at INR 82.10 Lakhs over three years, but only for PhD track post-VIU.
  • Mitacs-SICI Globalink: Best short-format research funding at INR 4.11 Lakhs plus travel and living support.
  • K.C. Mahindra: Cleanest India-side grant at INR 8 Lakhs with no repayment obligation.

Vancouver Island University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian UG student can secure at Vancouver Island University?

Ans. The realistic first-year stack for an Indian undergraduate maxes at CAD 7,500 (INR 5.13 Lakhs). This combines the International Student Entrance Scholarship (CAD 5,000) with a Stan and May Radzik Entrance Award (CAD 2,500). From year two, a SAB current-student scholarship of CAD 2,000 to 3,500 lifts the annual stack to about CAD 10,000 (INR 6.84 Lakhs), covering roughly 40% of standard tuition.

Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for Vancouver Island University scholarships?

Ans. Indian applicants targeting Fall 2027 entry should submit the VIU Entrance Awards application between October 15, 2026 and February 28, 2027. Decisions arrive by March or April 2027, in time for the visa timeline. Current-student awards use the April 30, 2027 midnight PST deadline for the following September disbursement.

Ques. Are Vancouver Island University scholarships automatic on acceptance?

Ans. No. VIU explicitly requires a separate Entrance Awards form, and no scholarship is granted automatically with the offer letter. The single SAB profile then covers 600+ current-student awards after enrollment, but the entrance-award form is a distinct submission tied to the incoming applicant.

Ques. What GPA threshold do Indian students need for a Vancouver Island University scholarship after enrollment?

Ans. Scholarships require a semester and cumulative GPA of 3.50 on the 4.00 scale (roughly A- average) plus an 80% course load. Practically, at least 12 credits per term for most programs. Awards require GPA 3.00 with a 60% course load. Bursaries need GPA 2.00 plus financial-need documentation.

Ques. Does the Vancouver Island University scholarship cover Nanaimo living costs?

Ans. A typical Indian student in Nanaimo spends CAD 14,000 to 18,000 annually on rent, food, transport and phone (INR 9.58 to 12.32 Lakhs). The maximum first-year VIU stack of CAD 7,500 covers about 45% of that living cost. It cannot fund both living and tuition together, so Indian students often top up with a 20-hour weekly on-campus job during term.

Ques. How many Indian students win Vancouver Island University entrance scholarships each year?

Ans. Indian nationals typically account for 4 to 7 of the 20 International Student Entrance Scholarship recipients each Fall intake. Indian representation stands at 125+ students within a 1,500-strong international cohort at VIU. Selection is academic-merit-based, with strong Class 12 board results being the most decisive factor.

My time at the university has been truly enriching. The campus's natural beauty, small class sizes, and dedicated professors have created a dynamic learning atmosphere. While there are challenges like limited job options and diversity, the personalized education, research opportunities, and sustainability focus have made this journey incredibly valuable.

It was an average and I am grateful that they rewarded me MBA degree at least.. Other than that their internship lectures were great but there was not actual company referrals . It was just focused on resume making, how to do networking that's all. The university should have real ties with lot of companies who can hire or at least interview maximum students.

The university had a co-op element, well-accredited, and economic living arrangements. I also had a few people from my network who did this program so I had some assurance. The program was designed for working professionals since I had work ex and have done a master's before I was more inclined towards this program. Also, their dual-degree option with their Partnered University from the UK was a great incentive to join.
