Bishop’s University offers 40+ scholarships, of which 20+ are accessible to Indian applicants.

This small English-language university in Sherbrooke, Quebec, distributes over C$7 million each year across roughly 55% of its student body. For an Indian applicant, the biggest wins come from stacking a renewable Bishop’s award with a Quebec provincial or federal Canadian scholarship.

  • Standard first-year international UG tuition 2026-27: C$20,862 to C$28,770 (INR 14.27 to 19.69 Lakhs)
  • Michael Goldbloom Scholarship reduces published tuition by: C$10,000 (INR 6.84 Lakhs) per year, renewable for the full degree
  • Best-case first-year stack (Michael Goldbloom + Entrance Bursary): up to C$14,000 (INR 9.58 Lakhs) in aid
  • Fall 2027 entrance award deadline: Tentative March 1, 2027 (application) and March 15, 2027 (supporting documents)

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 CAD = INR 68.42 as of August 2026. Bishop’s publishes every fee and award in Canadian dollars; each figure below carries both currencies for clarity.

Bishop’s University Scholarships for UG Students

Bishop’s University runs its entering undergraduate awards on one hard March cycle. Indian applicants compete alongside Canadian and other international students for the same merit pool.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD / INR)EligibilityRenewableFall 2027 Deadline (Tentative)
Michael Goldbloom Excellence ScholarshipC$10,000/year (INR 6.84 Lakhs)Outstanding academic record; alignment with Bishop’s values of learning, citizenship, community, discovery, excellence, and sustainabilityYes, entire degreeMarch 1 (application); March 15 (documents)
Chancellor’s Excellence ScholarshipC$10,000/year, up to C$40,000 total (INR 27.37 Lakhs across four years)90% average in Grade 11; requires essay and video submissionYes, four yearsMarch 1, 2027
Competitive Admission ScholarshipsC$1,000 to C$4,000/year (INR 68,420 to INR 2.74 Lakhs)80% to 90% high school average; academic merit onlySome awards renewableMarch 1, 2027
Entrance Awards and BursariesC$500 to C$12,000/year (INR 34,210 to INR 8.21 Lakhs)Academic merit, leadership, extracurriculars, or demonstrated financial needMostly one-timeMarch 1, 2027
Cleghorn Family AwardVariable80% academic average plus varsity-level athletic recordOne-timeMarch 1, 2027

Indian students should treat the March 1 date as an inflexible target. Bishop’s requires the online admission application first; the Entrance Awards and Bursaries jotform is a separate submission that closes the same day.

The Michael Goldbloom and Chancellor’s Excellence awards are the two renewable seats worth building an application around. Winning either cuts published international tuition (C$20,862 to C$28,770) by roughly a third across the full four-year degree.

Bishop’s University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Bishop’s Master’s programmes are small and thesis-heavy across Education, Physics, Computer Science, and a handful of MSc streams. Indian applicants layer a Bishop’s entrance award with departmental teaching or research assistant support.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD / INR)EligibilityNotesFall 2027 Deadline (Tentative)
Master’s Entrance ScholarshipsC$10,000 stipend (INR 6.84 Lakhs)Admitted to a thesis-based Master’s programmeAwarded automatically upon thesis-track admissionRolling; tentative July 31, 2027
Arbour Foundation ScholarshipC$20,000 (INR 13.68 Lakhs)75% cumulative undergraduate average; merit-based selectionOne-time; highly competitive across Canadian universitiesMarch 1, 2027
Departmental Teaching AssistantshipsVaries by departmentSupervisor recommendation; thesis-programme enrolmentApply through the admitting department after your offer letterRolling
Faculty Research AssistantshipsGrant-funded; amount variesFaculty supervisor holding an active research grantConfirm with your prospective supervisor before applyingRolling

The Arbour Foundation Scholarship is the marquee external Master’s award for Indian applicants at Bishop’s. Meeting the 75% undergraduate cutoff is straightforward; the essay and research-fit statement is where most files stall.

Reddit Insight: Indian applicants on graduate-school threads note that Bishop’s Master’s cohort typically holds under 30 students per programme. A direct email to your prospective supervisor before applying puts your funding conversation ahead of the queue.

India-Specific Scholarships at Bishop’s University

Bishop’s University does not run any India-nationality-only scholarship. Indian students reach India-linked funding through the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) and Mitacs, both of which recognise Bishop’s as a member institution.

ProgrammeAmount (CAD / INR)Who Runs ItLevelFall 2027 Deadline (Tentative)
Mitacs-SICI Globalink Research AwardC$6,000 per 12 to 24 week internship (INR 4.11 Lakhs)Mitacs and SICI jointlyMaster’s, PhD, postdocRolling; two intake rounds annually
SICI Shastri Doctoral Research FellowshipC$1,100 to C$1,300 per month for 3 to 4 months (INR 75,262 to INR 88,946 per month)Shastri Indo-Canadian InstituteIndian PhD scholars on Canada-focused researchDecember 15, 2026
SICI Shastri Research Student Fellowship (SRSF)Variable stipend, plus travel subsidyShastri Indo-Canadian InstituteIndian Master’s and PhD studentsDecember 15, 2026

What Bishop’s SICI membership provides for Indian students:

  • Direct nomination access without going through a third-party consultant
  • Countersigning of applications by the Bishop’s Research Office
  • Layering of a SICI stipend on top of a Bishop’s Master’s Entrance award

Bishop’s participates in Mitacs, so an admitted Indian Master’s or PhD student can layer the Globalink Research Award over their internal stipend. This lifts a summer research block by roughly INR 4 Lakhs.

Bishop’s University PhD Scholarships

Bishop’s University runs a narrow doctoral footprint concentrated in Educational Studies, Physics, and select interdisciplinary areas. Doctoral funding blends federal fellowships with supervisor grants.

AwardAmount (CAD / INR)EligibilityFall 2027 Deadline (Tentative)
SSHRC Doctoral FellowshipC$20,000/year for up to 4 years (INR 13.68 Lakhs)PhD candidates in social sciences or humanities; open to international studentsBishop’s internal October 15, 2026; national deadline mid-October
Bishop’s Doctoral Awards (via department)Variable; supervisor-linkedAdmitted PhD students with a confirmed supervisorRolling
Faculty Research Assistantships (PhD)Grant-funded; amount variesBishop’s faculty grant holders in your subfieldRolling

SSHRC is the largest single doctoral prize an Indian PhD applicant at Bishop’s University can chase. The internal shortlisting round at Bishop’s closes three to four weeks before the national submission date.

Everything else depends on your supervisor’s grant book. A signed supervisor letter is the practical prerequisite before you invest weeks in a Bishop’s PhD application.

External Government Scholarships for Bishop’s University Applicants

Two federal Canadian programmes plus one Quebec-only prize dominate the external funding conversation for Indian applicants at Bishop’s University.

ProgrammeAmount (CAD / INR)LevelEligibilityFall 2027 Deadline (Tentative)
Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral (CGRS-D)C$40,000/year for 3 years (INR 27.37 Lakhs per year)PhDOpen to all citizenships; replaced the Vanier programme in 2024November 1, 2026
Quebec Merit Scholarship for Foreign Students (PBEEE)C$3,000/month for short-term (INR 2.05 Lakhs per month); full stipend for Master’s, PhD, postdocMaster’s, PhD, postdoc, short-term researchNon-Canadian citizen; must be preselected by Bishop’sDecember 2, 2026 at 4 pm local (approx. 1:30 am IST, December 3)
Study in Canada Scholarships (Global Affairs Canada)Up to C$10,200 (INR 6.98 Lakhs)Short-term study or researchIndian nationals; nominated by Bishop’sMarch 2027

The PBEEE is the highest-leverage external prize for a Bishop’s-bound Indian applicant. Because Bishop’s sits in Quebec, PBEEE preselection can only happen through the Bishop’s Research Office, not by direct student application.

Indian PhD applicants should treat CGRS-D as the ceiling award. It replaced the older Vanier programme in 2024 and pays C$40,000 per year for three years, open to any nationality.

Reddit Insight: International PhD discussion threads flag one recurring gotcha for CGRS-D at smaller Quebec universities. Bishop’s internal shortlisting round closes about a month before the national submission window. Indian applicants targeting Fall 2027 should begin supervisor conversations by August 2026 (IST).

Bishop’s University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the highest scholarship stack an Indian student can win at Bishop’s University?

Ans. The realistic maximum stack pairs the Michael Goldbloom Excellence Scholarship (C$10,000 per year, renewable) with an Entrance Award of up to C$4,000. Across a four-year degree this comes to roughly C$56,000 (INR 38.32 Lakhs). Research-track Master’s and PhD candidates can lift that ceiling further by winning an external Quebec PBEEE or federal CGRS-D award.

Ques. When do Bishop’s University scholarship decisions arrive after the March deadline?

Ans. Bishop’s releases entrance scholarship decisions on a rolling basis from mid-April through late May for the March 1 cycle. Indian applicants targeting the Fall 2027 intake should expect email updates by early May 2027 (IST).

Ques. How does an Indian student actually apply for Bishop’s University scholarships?

Ans. Two separate submissions are required. Complete the admission application by March 1, then file the awards and bursaries form. All supporting documents (transcripts, essays, references) must reach Bishop’s by March 15.

Ques. What academic score does an Indian student need for a Bishop’s University scholarship?

Ans. Bishop’s sets a soft floor at 80% for its Competitive Admission Scholarships and 90% for the Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship. For CBSE and ISC applicants, this maps to roughly 80% aggregate in Class 11 and Class 12. State-board applicants should target the same aggregate after standard normalisation.

Ques. What is the Michael Goldbloom Excellence Scholarship and can Indian students apply?

Ans. The Michael Goldbloom Excellence Scholarship pays C$10,000 (INR 6.84 Lakhs) per year and is renewable across the full undergraduate degree. It is open to any entering undergraduate who applies by March 1, including Indian students, and prioritises academic strength alongside citizenship and community engagement.

Ques. Do Bishop’s University scholarships cover living costs in Sherbrooke?

Ans. Bishop’s scholarships fund tuition, not accommodation or food. Living costs in Sherbrooke run C$12,000 to C$16,000 (INR 8.21 to INR 10.95 Lakhs) per year. Indian students typically cover the gap through the federal 24-hour weekly off-campus work quota and paid summer research assistantships.

  • For searching off campus accommodations platforms like Kijiji, Facebook marketplace etc are the best. The students generally face housing shortage, affordability, short term rentals, understanding lease agreements. Start early and being ready to always act fast are some of the recommendations that always help.

It was a small school that advertised small class sizes and the ability to work with your professors. You have the chance to know everyone and get a different experience because of this. There are some world-class professors for the politics program as well. They also bring in a lot of speakers and workshops for the students.

Because of its family vibe and small community. The teachers know the students by their name and they are not just a number. It is a safe school and offers a great variety of programs. I really wanted to concentrate in international business and human resources but couldn't decide which one, so here I was able to take two.

Because it is a small school, so there are fewer students, and to experience to live in residence and to be more autonomous (on my own), and to have a new experience. I also went to a conference prior to choosing which university I would go to, and it seems a really good school with great teachers and a good community.
