Base tuition for an international PhD student sits at CAD 19,166 (₹12.97 Lakhs) per year, one of the lower rates for a public research university in Ontario. All doctoral streams begin the process by matching with a supervisor before you file the application.
Ontario Tech PhD Application Steps
- Identify a supervisor: browse faculty pages by research theme and email 2 to 3 faculty with a research statement and CV
- Secure a supervisor’s confirmation: Ontario Tech does not admit doctoral students without a faculty member willing to supervise
- File the application: submit through the Ontario Tech applicant portal with transcripts, research proposal and English scores
- Fund the seat: most admitted PhDs receive a funding package combining a graduate assistantship, research stipend and internal awards
University of Ontario Institute of Technology PhD Intakes and Dates
PhD applications track the same three intakes as master’s programs. For 2027 entry, the Winter (January) engineering and science deadline of 1 September 2026 has closed; the Cybersecurity PhD Winter deadline is 1 October 2026; the Spring 2027 deadline across all PhD programs is 13 November 2026; the Fall 2027 window closes between 1 February and 1 April 2027 depending on the program. Funding for the same academic year is confirmed with the offer letter.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Ontario Tech graduate studies page for your chosen program before applying.
University of Ontario Institute of Technology Application Process
The route differs by level. UG applicants use the OUAC 105F platform (Ontario’s provincial application system for international undergraduate applicants), while PG and PhD applicants apply directly on the Ontario Tech applicant portal. Steps are sourced from the official international admissions page.
- Open the correct portal. UG applicants file on OUAC 105F, whose 2027 cycle is already open. PG and PhD applicants use the Ontario Tech applicant portal.
- Pay the application fee. UG applicants pay CAD 156 (₹10,553) OUAC base fee for three program choices plus a CAD 80 (₹5,411) Ontario Tech supplementary fee. PG applicants pay a CAD 100 (₹6,764) application fee at the portal step.
- Enter academic history. Add every Class XI, Class XII, undergraduate or postgraduate credential with grading scale and predicted or final marks.
- Upload documents. The applicant portal opens after you submit the OUAC or direct application, and lets you upload transcripts, English scores, statement of intent and CV.
- Add references (PG only). Two academic referees are typical for master’s; three are typical for PhD applications.
- Submit and track. Decisions and document status appear in the same applicant portal.
University of Ontario Institute of Technology Admission Decisions Timeline
Ontario Tech works on rolling review once your file is complete. Undergraduate offer letters for Fall entry begin issuing from December through May, with the bulk sent between February and April. Graduate decisions typically arrive within 6 to 10 weeks of a complete file, depending on how quickly the supervisor or faculty admissions committee reviews.
- Conditional offers: issued if English test results or final Class XII marksheet are still pending
- Acceptance deadline: most offers require confirmation and deposit within 2 to 4 weeks of the offer letter date
- Deferral policy: you can request a one-term or two-term deferral to a later intake, subject to program approval and deposit re-application
- Withdrawal of offer: failure to meet a stated final Class XII condition (for example, holding 75 percent for BEng) can cause the offer to be rescinded
Insider note: Applicants who file within the first six weeks of a cycle typically hear back three to four weeks faster than the peak-window average — supervisor availability is highest early in the cycle for PhD and MASc streams.
University of Ontario Institute of Technology Documents Required
The paperwork checklist below is for Indian applicants filing an international application. Original credentials in English are accepted; State Board documents in regional languages must be translated by a certified translator. Keep passport-quality scans in PDF, one file per document.
- Valid passport: bio-data page scan, at least 18 months of validity beyond intended entry
- Class X and Class XII marksheets and certificates: from CBSE, CISCE or State Board
- Undergraduate transcript and degree (PG and PhD): semester-wise marksheets plus provisional or final degree certificate
- English proficiency score report: IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo or CAEL (or MOI letter for the waiver)
- Statement of intent or purpose: 500 to 800 words for graduate applications
- Curriculum vitae: covering academics, projects, publications and work
- Letters of recommendation: two for master’s programs, three for PhD
- Research proposal (PhD): 1,500 to 3,000 words aligned to the supervisor’s interests
- Financial documents: bank statement or sponsor letter for the study permit stage
- Photograph: passport-size digital colour photograph
University of Ontario Institute of Technology Acceptance Rate
Ontario Tech’s institutional acceptance rate is estimated at around 70 percent, based on undergraduate admit patterns. The university does not publish an official institutional figure — Ontario public universities typically report headcount and yield rather than acceptance rate. The number reflects the access-oriented mission of the institution (it admits most applicants who meet its stated academic and English requirements) rather than a signal that entry is easy.
Ontario Tech Program-Level Selectivity
Selectivity varies sharply by program. BEng streams, BScN Nursing, and MBAI cohorts see higher effective cutoffs because seat counts are small. MEd, MEng and MHSc are more open. Placement in one of Ontario Tech’s ranked subject bands (Engineering, Computer Science, Business) has slowly moved application volumes up over three cycles.
Ontario Tech Acceptance Rate Compared to Peers
The estimate sits above Waterloo Engineering (roughly 43 percent) and McMaster Engineering (roughly 50 percent), and closer to Ontario mid-tier public universities such as Windsor or Lakehead. For Indian applicants, this means Ontario Tech is a strong secondary application alongside U15 targets, especially for engineering and IT.
Reality check: A stated 70 percent acceptance rate does not translate to 70 percent for every program. Nursing intake is capped and typically clears above 80 percent Class XII; MBAI shortlists at the interview stage. Read acceptance as institutional, not program-level.
University of Ontario Institute of Technology Canada Student Visa Process
Indian students admitted to Ontario Tech apply for a Canadian Study Permit from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) after receiving the Letter of Acceptance. From January 2024, the process also requires a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) issued by the Government of Ontario, which the university provides after you pay the tuition deposit.
Steps: create an IRCC account, upload the LOA and PAL, submit proof of a CAD 20,635 (₹13.96 Lakhs) Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) plus first-year tuition receipt, biometrics at a VFS Canada centre in India, and complete a medical examination through an IRCC-approved panel physician. Application fee is CAD 150 (₹10,148) plus CAD 85 (₹5,749) biometrics. Median processing for Indian applicants sits at 4 to 8 weeks; SDS (Student Direct Stream) applicants typically clear faster.
2026 update: The federal study permit cap continues into 2027, so start the visa file the same week your offer arrives. PAL turnaround from Ontario Tech is currently 2 to 3 weeks after deposit is received.
University of Ontario Institute of Technology Application Tips and Checklist
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Ontario Tech across the last three admission cycles.
- Request transcripts eight weeks before deadline to avoid Indian university turnaround delays
- Book IELTS or TOEFL 10 to 12 weeks before applying so re-tests remain possible if needed
- Email prospective PhD or MASc supervisors 12 weeks early — funded seats close fast for engineering streams
- Draft the MOI waiver letter early with your school registrar if you plan to skip IELTS
- File OUAC before the equal-consideration date to keep all three UG choices in review
- Reserve CAD 20,635 (₹13.96 Lakhs) for the GIC two weeks before the study permit filing
- Complete biometrics within seven days of study permit submission at a VFS Canada centre
- Confirm accommodation before travel — on-campus housing at Ontario Tech is limited for graduate students
Late applicants should still file — Ontario Tech continues rolling review after the equal-consideration date until seats are filled, and funding for Indian students is still assessed on submitted files.
Ontario Tech’s admissions cycle is genuinely open for Indian applicants across three intakes in 2026-27, with the Fall 2027 primary window offering the widest program list and the most funding. The path is simple: OUAC 105F for undergraduate, the applicant portal for graduate, IELTS 6.5 or an MOI letter, and one clean set of documents.

Overview
I chose it because it was ranked good for computer science and my friends got accepted in it as well. The location and university fees were also within my budget I liked my time there. Going abroad and integrating with the culture helped me broaden my horizons and I made some amazing friends. The university was the same as many other universities in Canada Ontario to be honest. Especially due to the final two years being online, it really took away the university feel.
Scholarship
No I did not receive any scholarship. I believe for the scholarship you had to have the highest grade in your school or maintain GPA above 3.5 in university
Likes
- The university, is fairly new, and in steady development. Since it's tech university it extensively laid out its equipment for any courses. And especially for Software Engineering they provide an amazing program.
Overview
My overall experience at Ontario Tech University has been incredibly fulfilling and transformative. The diverse range of courses, knowledgeable faculty, and supportive community have enriched my learning journey. Engaging in extracurricular activities, participating in events, and forming lifelong friendships have made my time here truly memorable. I feel fortunate to be part of such an inclusive and inspiring educational environment. I would've regretted so much if i knew this is what I would he missing if I didn't come here.
Scholarship
I got a 3000$ dollar scholarship for getting 84% in Highschool.
Overview
I weighed my options, and this school was the closest to home, at a moderate price. They also offer free public transportation as part of the student ID and access to a gym. The program was very good (as per upper-year students experiences), and the campus is beautiful and new
Overview
It was a good prep for med school as I was told by recent graduates and alumni. I also read several forums online that detailed the advantages and disadvantages of the program which includes commute for me personally.
Overview
UOIT is one of the closest universities that offers the med lab program to where i live. The program is only offered at about 5 colleges/universities in Ontario. I also opted for the university over the college program as obtaining a bachelors degree will open more opportunities for myself in the future.
Overview
This school is right in my home neighborhood so it is a perfect choice. Also, it is more hands-on with the students. It's easier to become familiar with the profs to create relationships with your peers.
Overview
It was close to home and it had a specific Legal Studies program, which is what I wanted to do before law school, which I hope to attend after my undergraduate degree. It is also more affordable than some other schools in Ontario.
