The college holds a NAAC A++ accreditation, the highest grade awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

GMC Nagpur does not currently appear in the NIRF Medical Rankings 2025 top 50.

The 196-acre campus at Hanuman Nagar, Nagpur, is among the largest medical college campuses in the region. The attached Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is a 1,700-bed tertiary care centre serving the Vidarbha region, making it one of the busiest teaching hospitals in Maharashtra.

GMC Nagpur offers a broad range of medical and allied health programmes:

  • MD / MS - 197 seats across 21 disciplines (NEET PG)

The total MBBS fee under the Government Quota is INR 8,83,750 for the entire 4.5-year programme. Hostel accommodation costs approximately INR 4,000 per annum, excluding mess charges.

Admission Update: GMC Nagpur MBBS admissions for the 2026-27 session are based on NEET UG 2026. Counselling is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for the 15% All India Quota and by the Maharashtra CET Cell for the 85% State Quota. Aspirants should check the MCC and Maharashtra CET Cell portals for current round status and seat allotment schedules.

GMC Nagpur Admission Process

MBBS

MBBS admission to GMC Nagpur is entirely NEET UG-driven. There is no direct application to the college. Seats are filled through centralised counselling by two bodies.

  • 15% All India Quota (AIQ): Allotted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), open to candidates from all states
  • 85% State Quota: Allotted by the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test Cell (Maharashtra CET Cell), restricted to Maharashtra state domicile candidates
  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB) and minimum 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD)
  • Minimum NEET qualification: 50th percentile for General (40th for SC/ST/OBC/PwD)

GMC Nagpur NEET UG 2025 closing rank under AIQ for the General Category was approximately 18,164 in the final round. Under the Maharashtra State Quota, General Category closing ranks have ranged from 4,000 to 8,700 in earlier rounds, with mop-up rounds extending to higher rank numbers.

MD / MS (Postgraduate)

PG medical admissions use NEET PG scores. The AIQ (50%) is managed by MCC and state seats (50%) by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Maharashtra.

  • Eligibility: MBBS from an NMC-recognised institution with completion of compulsory rotating internship
  • NEET PG General Category closing rank at GMC Nagpur for MD has ranged from 357 to 1,97,035 depending on the discipline, with competitive branches like Radio-Diagnosis attracting top-rank candidates
  • MS surgical disciplines typically see closing ranks in the 1,810 to 9,040 range for General Category

DM / M.Ch (Super-specialty)

Super-specialty seats are filled through NEET SS. Candidates must hold an MD or MS degree in the relevant parent specialty. MCC handles the AIQ seat allotment for DM and M.Ch at GMC Nagpur.

Allied Health Sciences (B.Sc Nursing / BPT / BOT / BPMT)

B.Sc Nursing and Physiotherapy admissions are conducted through Maharashtra CET Cell. NEET UG scores are required for B.Sc Nursing under the revised NMC and INC norms. BPT and BOT admissions may be merit-based through separate state-level processes.

GMC Nagpur Placements and Career Outcomes

GMC Nagpur does not hold campus placements in the conventional sense. MBBS graduates progress through a structured government pathway: a 1-year compulsory rotating internship at GMCH, followed by a mandatory rural or government service bond, NEET PG preparation, and eventual specialisation or private practice.

Career Stage / PathwayTypical CompensationNotes
MBBS InternshipINR 18,000 per month (stipend)Compulsory 1-year rotating internship at GMCH
Government Medical OfficerINR 60,000 to INR 70,000 per monthMaharashtra state government; includes bond service
NEET PG Residency (MD/MS)INR 60,000 to INR 80,000 per month (stipend)Most graduates pursue PG within 1 to 2 NEET PG attempts
Private Hospital EmploymentINR 80,000 to INR 1,50,000 per monthPost-MBBS, private multi-specialty hospitals in Nagpur and Vidarbha region
After DM / M.ChINR 2 Lakhs per month and aboveSuper-specialist, government or private practice

A significant portion of each MBBS batch qualifies for MD or MS seats in NEET PG. Graduates are absorbed at GMCH itself, district hospitals across Vidarbha, Armed Forces Medical Services, national research institutions (ICMR, NCI Nagpur), and private hospitals in Nagpur, Pune, and Mumbai.

Service Bond: MBBS graduates from GMC Nagpur are required to complete a mandatory government service bond post-internship. Failure to fulfil the bond attracts a financial penalty as per the Maharashtra government’s current bond policy. Candidates should review the latest bond terms at the time of admission.

GMC Nagpur Campus and Infrastructure

The GMC Nagpur campus spans 196 acres at Hanuman Nagar in Nagpur. The attached teaching hospital, GMCH, has over 1,700 beds and handles approximately 1,500 outpatient cases and 100 emergency cases daily. The campus houses 23 academic departments covering all major pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical disciplines, including specialties such as Anatomy, Biochemistry, Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Radiology, and Oncology.

Hostel accommodation is available on campus. Five hostel blocks serve students - three for boys and two for girls, each with approximately 120 rooms. Hostel fees are approximately INR 4,000 per annum for accommodation, with separate mess charges. Boys’ hostels operate 24 hours; girls’ hostels observe a regulated entry schedule. The campus also has a library, sports ground, student canteen, and a health centre.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), Nagpur, is located adjacent to GMC Nagpur and offers additional tertiary oncology exposure for MBBS and PG students. The hospital’s patient load from across the Vidarbha region provides extensive clinical exposure even for junior-year students - a recognised advantage of government medical colleges with high-bed-strength teaching hospitals.

GMC Nagpur vs IGGMCH Nagpur vs BJ Medical College Pune

Aspirants considering GMC Nagpur often compare it with Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) Nagpur - the other major government medical college in the city - and with BJ Medical College, Pune, one of Maharashtra’s oldest government medical institutions. All three serve the same NEET UG applicant pool through Maharashtra state and AIQ counselling.

GMC Nagpur leads in MBBS seat count among Nagpur-based government medical colleges and holds a NAAC A++ accreditation. IGGMCH Nagpur draws a slightly more competitive NEET rank pool given its lower seat count, though both serve the same region. BJ Medical College, Pune, benefits from its historic standing and Pune’s metro location but typically attracts stronger NEET ranks. Aspirants from Vidarbha with mid-range NEET ranks often find GMC Nagpur the most accessible government option in the region.

Which college is better, AIIMS Nagpur or GMC Nagpur?

Advait JoshiLives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

In order to determine, which of the two; AIIMS Nagpur and GMC is better, I have listed the pros of the two institutes individually. Go for the institute that appeals to you the most.

Pros of GMC Nagpur

  • GMC Nagpur delivers top-quality education and has a top-notch lab equipped with the latest instruments.
  • It is the largest medical college in Asia. The campus is surrounded by greenery and has a pleasant ambiance.
  • There are separate opds and wards for most of the departments.
  • GMC Nagpur has a huge patient inflow and is large and managed by a good number of resident doctors
  • Gmc Nagpur has its own Trauma center and Superspeciality hospital in addition to wards for TB and infectious diseases.
  • There are separate hostels for both boys and girls with all the general amenities.
  • GMC Nagpur has its own ground for sports and other recreational activities.

It certainly is a decent choice for pursuing Mbbs,MS,MD etc .

Pros of AIIMS Nagpur

The AIIMS tag in itself carries huge weightage.

  • AIIMS is known for its strong focus on clinical aspects rather than theoretical aspects.
  • The plans for building its campus seem very promising in the near future.
  • Good hostel facilities are available for both boys and girls.
  • However, AIIMS Nagpur is dependent on GMC Nagpur for a lot of things such as campus facilities.

I would always suggest you go for GMC Nagpur as it has better facilities than AIIMS Nagpur and seems more promising.
