MIT B.Tech Data Sciences FAQs

Ques. Is B.Tech Data Sciences at MIT Manipal a separate degree or a specialization under CSE?

Ans. B.Tech Data Sciences at MIT Manipal is offered as a distinct program under the Computer Science stream. Students who complete this program receive a degree specifically in Data Science (or Data Science and Engineering), not a generic CSE degree. The curriculum is tailored towards data science, machine learning, big data, and analytics, though it shares some foundational courses with the CSE program.

Ques. What is the placement scenario for B.Tech Data Sciences at MIT Manipal?

Ans. Placements for Data Sciences students are generally strong, as data science skills are in high demand across IT, analytics, fintech, and product companies. Students are eligible for the same placement pool as CSE students. Top recruiters include Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, SAP Labs, Mu Sigma, Fractal Analytics, and major IT companies. The approximate average package for Data Sciences students is Rs. 10-15 LPA, with top performers securing Rs. 25-35 LPA.

Ques. How does B.Tech Data Sciences compare to B.Tech CSE at MIT Manipal in terms of fees and placements?

Ans. Both B.Tech Data Sciences and B.Tech CSE fall in the same fee group at MIT Manipal (Rs. 4,85,000/year tuition). The key difference is the curriculum focus - Data Sciences is more specialized in statistics, ML, and data engineering, while CSE offers broader software engineering coverage with optional specializations. Both programs have comparable placement outcomes, with CSE having a slight edge due to larger batch size and more recruiters.

Ques. What MET rank is required to get admission to B.Tech Data Sciences at MIT Manipal?

Ans. Based on 2024 MET counselling data, the rank range for B.Tech Data Sciences at MIT Manipal was approximately 4,310 to 5,794 (General category, across rounds). This is slightly higher (more competitive) than some other branches but less competitive than B.Tech CSE (which typically closes around rank 3,479). Ranks may vary each year based on the number of applicants and seat availability.

Ques. What minor specializations are available for B.Tech Data Sciences students at MIT Manipal?

Ans. B.Tech Data Sciences students at MIT Manipal can opt for minor specializations in Computational Intelligence, Data Analytics, Cyber Security, Computer Graphics and Visualization, and Software System Design. These minors allow students to develop additional domain expertise alongside their core Data Sciences curriculum, enhancing their employability in specialized roles.

Ques. Is the total cost of studying B.Tech Data Sciences at MIT Manipal worth it given the high fees?

Ans. The total cost including tuition (Rs. 20,54,000) and hostel/living expenses can reach approximately Rs. 28-30 lakhs over 4 years. Given that Data Sciences graduates from MIT Manipal typically secure packages of Rs. 10-15 LPA on average, the ROI is reasonable for students who are proactive about internships, projects, and skill development. Scholarships (up to 100% tuition waiver for MET rank under 100, 20% for rank under 5,000) can significantly reduce the financial burden. Education loans are also available through major banks.

MIT Manipal: 2 Answered Questions

What is the total expenditure for a BTech course in Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka?

Sapna Malik
Shyam VermaComputer Science, and Engineering, MIT Manipal

Here is a rough estimate of the total expenditure for a BTech course at MIT Karnataka.

  • Total Tuition Fees ( BTech): INR 18.62 Lakhs
  • Hostel + Mess fees: Around 4–5 Lacs depending on the hostel you choose
  • Travel expense: On average you will be spending 750-1000 per month. So the cost of a 9-month stay for 4 years will be 1000*36= INR 36000
  • Travel expense from home to college: This varies from person to person because if you live far away, you will have to travel by airplane. Assuming, you will be taking 4 trips a year, the cost will be around 1 Lakh.
  • Misclieous Expenses: Around INR 5000 per month. So 5000 x 9 x 4 = 180000 INR.

The above estimate does take into account the money you spend partying or going on trips. Also, it's important to note that the above estimate is purely based on my speculations and may vary from person to person.

Which one is better for a BTech course: BITS Pilani or Manipal Institute of Technology Karnataka?

Bidita GhoseLives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

It's highly illogical to compare a Tier-1 engineering college like BITS to a Tier-2 university like Manipal Institute of Technology.

One cannot compare universities like Manipal, VIT, SRM, Jaypee, Amity, etc. to IIT, NIT, and BITS. These colleges have no brand value of their own and most of the people coming here are those who failed to qualify for competitive exams like JEE/BITSAT/AIEEE/etc. Moreover, the exposure and opportunities offered at BITS are unmatched. It's probably the only private engineering college that enjoys excellent global recognition too.

Irrespective of the branch you go for, the BITS Pilani degree has similar value everywhere. The BITS alumni network is great with some of them being co-founders of Redbus, Hotmail, etc.

Here is a brief comparison of these institutes
