MIT M.Tech CSIS FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between M.Tech CS (Information Security) and M.Tech CS (Cyber Security) at MIT Manipal?

Ans. M.Tech CS (Information Security) focuses on protecting information and data through cryptography, cryptanalysis, distributed and cloud security, cyber forensics, and IoT security, with a strong research orientation through the Centre for Cryptography. M.Tech CS (Cyber Security) has a broader focus on cybersecurity protocols, ethical hacking, network security, and real-world case studies in cyber labs. Information Security is more research and cryptography-oriented, while Cyber Security is more applied and industry-focused. Both are excellent programs depending on your career goals.

Ques. Does the M.Tech CS (Information Security) program at MIT Manipal include an internship?

Ans. Yes. The program includes a 6-8 month industry internship, typically in the second year. This internship provides real-world cybersecurity experience and often leads to pre-placement offers. Most students opt out of hostel accommodation during this internship period, which also reduces the overall cost of the program.

Ques. Is GATE mandatory for admission to M.Tech CS (Information Security) at MIT Manipal?

Ans. No, GATE is not mandatory. Admission is primarily through MET (Manipal Entrance Test). However, GATE-qualified candidates (General category) receive additional weightage in the merit list. Having a good GATE score is advantageous but not compulsory.

Ques. What are the career opportunities after M.Tech CS (Information Security) from MIT Manipal?

Ans. Graduates can pursue roles such as network security engineer, security architect, disaster recovery manager, information systems security officer, cryptography analyst, cloud security specialist, and cyber forensics expert. The Centre for Cryptography at MIT Manipal also provides research opportunities and connections with government organizations.

Ques. What is the actual total cost of studying M.Tech CS (Information Security) at MIT Manipal including hostel?

Ans. The total academic fee is Rs. 4,30,000 for 2 years. If you opt for hostel with mess, it costs approximately Rs. 1,83,000 per year. However, most students in the second year are on internship and do not take hostel accommodation. So the realistic total cost is approximately Rs. 4,30,000 (academic) + Rs. 1,83,000 (Year 1 hostel with mess) = approximately Rs. 6,13,000 for the full program.

Ques. Does MIT Manipal's Centre for Cryptography provide any special opportunities for M.Tech CS (Information Security) students?

Ans. Yes. The Centre for Cryptography at MIT Manipal conducts research and activities in the security domain in association with government organizations and industry. M.Tech CS (Information Security) students can participate in research projects, collaborate with government agencies, and gain exposure to cutting-edge cryptography research. This is a significant differentiator for this program compared to similar programs at other institutions.

MIT Manipal: 2 Answered Questions

What is the total expenditure for a BTech course in Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka?

Sapna Malik
Shyam VermaComputer Science, and Engineering, MIT Manipal

Here is a rough estimate of the total expenditure for a BTech course at MIT Karnataka.

  • Total Tuition Fees ( BTech): INR 18.62 Lakhs
  • Hostel + Mess fees: Around 4–5 Lacs depending on the hostel you choose
  • Travel expense: On average you will be spending 750-1000 per month. So the cost of a 9-month stay for 4 years will be 1000*36= INR 36000
  • Travel expense from home to college: This varies from person to person because if you live far away, you will have to travel by airplane. Assuming, you will be taking 4 trips a year, the cost will be around 1 Lakh.
  • Misclieous Expenses: Around INR 5000 per month. So 5000 x 9 x 4 = 180000 INR.

The above estimate does take into account the money you spend partying or going on trips. Also, it's important to note that the above estimate is purely based on my speculations and may vary from person to person.

Which one is better for a BTech course: BITS Pilani or Manipal Institute of Technology Karnataka?

Bidita GhoseLives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

It's highly illogical to compare a Tier-1 engineering college like BITS to a Tier-2 university like Manipal Institute of Technology.

One cannot compare universities like Manipal, VIT, SRM, Jaypee, Amity, etc. to IIT, NIT, and BITS. These colleges have no brand value of their own and most of the people coming here are those who failed to qualify for competitive exams like JEE/BITSAT/AIEEE/etc. Moreover, the exposure and opportunities offered at BITS are unmatched. It's probably the only private engineering college that enjoys excellent global recognition too.

Irrespective of the branch you go for, the BITS Pilani degree has similar value everywhere. The BITS alumni network is great with some of them being co-founders of Redbus, Hotmail, etc.

Here is a brief comparison of these institutes
