MIT M.Tech Defence Technology FAQs

Ques. What makes M.Tech Defence Technology at MIT Manipal unique compared to other M.Tech programmes?

Ans. This is a DRDO-AICTE collaborative programme, one of the very few M.Tech programmes in Defence Technology offered by a private engineering institution in India. The unique features include: (1) laboratory courses conducted in DRDO's high-tech defence labs across India, (2) courses taught by DRDO scientists and industry experts, (3) project work in Semesters 3 and 4 under guidance of defence establishment experts, (4) a significantly subsidised fee of Rs. 2.16 Lakhs for the entire 2-year programme, and (5) direct exposure to India's indigenous defence technology development ecosystem.

Ques. What are the two specialisations offered and how should I choose between them?

Ans. The programme offers two specialisations: (1) Aerospace Technology - focused on aerospace systems, avionics, propulsion, flight mechanics, and related defence aerospace applications; and (2) Communication Systems and Sensors - focused on radar systems, electronic warfare, communication systems, sensor technologies, and signal processing for defence applications. Semester 1 has a common curriculum for both. Students from Aeronautical/Aerospace/Mechanical backgrounds may prefer Aerospace Technology, while ECE/EEE graduates may find Communication Systems and Sensors more aligned with their background.

Ques. What are the career prospects after M.Tech Defence Technology from MIT Manipal?

Ans. Graduates are well-positioned for careers in DRDO laboratories, defence public sector undertakings (HAL, BEL, ECIL, BEML, MDL), ordnance factories, private defence companies (L&T Defence, Tata Advanced Systems, Bharat Forge, Mahindra Defence), and the Indian Armed Forces (as technical officers). The programme is specifically designed to fulfil the growing demand for technical expertise in India's expanding defence industry, driven by the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and increasing defence exports.

Ques. Is hostel mandatory for this programme? What are the hostel facilities like?

Ans. Yes, hostel accommodation is mandatory for all first-year students. MIT Manipal has well-maintained hostel facilities with options ranging from non-AC shared rooms to AC single rooms. The cheapest hostel option costs approximately Rs. 2.23 Lakhs for 2 years (including mess charges). The mandatory hostel policy for first-year students ensures a focused academic environment and helps students integrate into the campus community quickly.

Ques. Can GATE-qualified students effectively study for free in this programme?

Ans. Effectively, yes. The AICTE GATE scholarship provides approximately Rs. 12,400 per month for 2 years, totalling approximately Rs. 2,97,600 over the programme duration. Since the total tuition fee is only Rs. 2.16 Lakhs, GATE-qualified students can cover their entire tuition fee and have a surplus. However, the GATE scholarship and MAHE Merit Scholarship cannot be availed simultaneously, and students must apply separately for the GATE scholarship through AICTE's portal.

Ques. What DRDO labs will students get to work in during this programme?

Ans. The programme is supported by DRDO's state-of-the-art specialised defence laboratories across India. Students opting for the Aerospace Technology specialisation may work in labs like DRDL (Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad), ADE (Aeronautical Development Establishment, Bangalore), or GTRE (Gas Turbine Research Establishment, Bangalore). Students in Communication Systems and Sensors may work in labs like DLRL (Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, Hyderabad) or SAM (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research). The specific labs depend on the project and faculty guidance.

MIT Manipal: 2 Answered Questions

What is the total expenditure for a BTech course in Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka?

Sapna Malik
Shyam VermaComputer Science, and Engineering, MIT Manipal

Here is a rough estimate of the total expenditure for a BTech course at MIT Karnataka.

  • Total Tuition Fees ( BTech): INR 18.62 Lakhs
  • Hostel + Mess fees: Around 4–5 Lacs depending on the hostel you choose
  • Travel expense: On average you will be spending 750-1000 per month. So the cost of a 9-month stay for 4 years will be 1000*36= INR 36000
  • Travel expense from home to college: This varies from person to person because if you live far away, you will have to travel by airplane. Assuming, you will be taking 4 trips a year, the cost will be around 1 Lakh.
  • Misclieous Expenses: Around INR 5000 per month. So 5000 x 9 x 4 = 180000 INR.

The above estimate does take into account the money you spend partying or going on trips. Also, it's important to note that the above estimate is purely based on my speculations and may vary from person to person.

Which one is better for a BTech course: BITS Pilani or Manipal Institute of Technology Karnataka?

Bidita GhoseLives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

It's highly illogical to compare a Tier-1 engineering college like BITS to a Tier-2 university like Manipal Institute of Technology.

One cannot compare universities like Manipal, VIT, SRM, Jaypee, Amity, etc. to IIT, NIT, and BITS. These colleges have no brand value of their own and most of the people coming here are those who failed to qualify for competitive exams like JEE/BITSAT/AIEEE/etc. Moreover, the exposure and opportunities offered at BITS are unmatched. It's probably the only private engineering college that enjoys excellent global recognition too.

Irrespective of the branch you go for, the BITS Pilani degree has similar value everywhere. The BITS alumni network is great with some of them being co-founders of Redbus, Hotmail, etc.

Here is a brief comparison of these institutes
