Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB), Pune is an autonomous research-teaching institute established in 2002 under the University Grants Commission’s "University with Potential for Excellence" programme. IBB functions as a constituent unit of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and is UGC-approved. It is one of the few dedicated institutions in India offering specialised education and research in Bioinformatics, Structural Biology, and Virology at the graduate and postgraduate level.
IBB Pune does not appear in the NIRF ranked list for 2025, as it is a small single-discipline research institute that does not participate in NIRF rankings.
The institute is located on the main SPPU campus at Ganeshkhind, Pune. The campus houses specialised laboratories including a Central Instrumentation Facility, Bioinformatics computing lab, animal and plant tissue culture labs, a fermentation laboratory, and a dedicated library.

IBB Pune Placements and Career Outcomes
IBB Pune functions primarily as a research institute rather than a campus-placement institute. Graduates from the integrated B.Tech+M.Tech and B.Sc+M.Sc programmes pursue careers in biotechnology industry, pharmaceutical research, academic research, and government science bodies. The institute’s strong research output in Bioinformatics, Structural Biology, and Virology positions graduates well for research-oriented roles.
Common career pathways for IBB Pune graduates include:
- Biotech and pharma industry: Research associate, bioinformatics analyst, quality assurance, and process development roles at pharma and biotech companies in the Pune region
- Academic and government research: Positions at CSIR, ICMR, DBT-funded labs, and university departments after qualifying national fellowships (UGC NET / CSIR NET / DBT JRF)
- Higher studies abroad: A portion of graduates from the B.Tech+M.Tech track pursue Masters or PhD programmes at international universities in the US, Europe, and Australia
- Public health and policy: M.Sc Virology graduates may join government virology labs, NIV Pune, or public health departments
IBB does not publish placement statistics in the format of average CTC or highest package, as placement is not the primary outcome focus of this research-training institute.
IBB Pune Scholarships
IBB Pune students are eligible for central and state government scholarship schemes. Research scholars are additionally supported through national fellowship programmes from science funding bodies.
| Scholarship / Fellowship | Eligibility | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| UGC / CSIR JRF | PhD students who qualify UGC NET or CSIR NET JRF | Monthly stipend from the national funding agency (INR 31,000 to 37,000 per month as per current JRF scales) |
| DBT JRF | PhD students who qualify the DBT-JRF examination | Monthly research fellowship during the PhD programme |
| Maharashtra Post-Matric Scholarship | SC, ST, OBC, SEBC, and EWS students enrolled in any IBB programme | Tuition fee reimbursement and maintenance allowance via MahaDBT portal |
| Post-Doctoral Fellowship (Internal) | Ph.D. holders in relevant Life Sciences field | Project-based fellowship. Contact IBB directly for current vacancies |
JRF stipend amounts above reflect the current DBT / UGC scales and may be revised. Students must independently apply to the respective national bodies for UGC, CSIR, and DBT fellowships. These fellowships are not administered by IBB.
IBB Pune Campus and Infrastructure
IBB Pune is situated within the main campus of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) at Ganeshkhind, Pune. Being embedded in one of Maharashtra’s largest and oldest university campuses gives IBB students access to SPPU’s broader academic ecosystem, including the university library, sports facilities, and inter-departmental research collaborations.
The institute’s own infrastructure includes a Central Instrumentation Facility for shared analytical equipment, dedicated Bioinformatics computing laboratory, Structural Biology research lab, Virology laboratory, animal and plant tissue culture facilities, a fermentation laboratory, and a departmental library. These facilities support the institute’s research output in computational biology, protein structure, and infectious disease virology.
IBB does not operate its own hostel. Students residing on campus may apply for SPPU’s hostel facilities available across the university campus. Pune city’s extensive public transport and student accommodation ecosystem provides additional housing options close to the Ganeshkhind campus.
