KCG BE Lateral Mechatronics FAQs
Ques. What is Mechatronics Engineering and how is it different from Mechanical or Electronics Engineering?
Ans. Mechatronics Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that combines Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Embedded Systems, and Computer Science to design and build intelligent automated systems and robots. Unlike pure Mechanical or Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics focuses on the integration of all these disciplines. At KCG, the programme covers robotics, automation, PLC programming, sensors, actuators, and Industry 4.0 technologies, making graduates versatile engineers suited for modern manufacturing and automation industries.
Ques. I have a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Am I eligible for the BE Lateral Entry (Mechatronics) at KCG?
Ans. Yes, Diploma holders in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Electrical, or related disciplines are generally eligible for the BE Lateral Entry (Mechatronics) programme, subject to DOTE/Anna University norms on eligible diploma branches. The minimum eligibility is 55% for General category (OC). You should verify the specific list of eligible diploma branches on the official TNLEA portal (www.tnlea.com) before applying.
Ques. Is the BE Lateral Entry (Mechatronics) degree from KCG valid for GATE and government jobs?
Ans. Yes, the degree is awarded by Anna University and is fully recognised by UGC, AICTE, and all government bodies. It is valid for GATE, PSU recruitment, and higher studies (ME/M.Tech). There is no distinction between a lateral entry degree and a regular degree on the certificate.
Ques. What are the career prospects after completing BE Lateral Entry (Mechatronics) from KCG?
Ans. Graduates can work in roles such as Automation Engineer, Robotics Engineer, Embedded Systems Engineer, PLC Programmer, Industrial IoT Engineer, and Smart Manufacturing Specialist. Industries hiring Mechatronics engineers include automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, manufacturing, and defence. With the rise of Industry 4.0, demand for Mechatronics engineers is growing rapidly. Graduates can also pursue ME/M.Tech in Mechatronics, Robotics, or related fields, or appear for GATE for PSU and higher education opportunities.
Ques. Is hostel available for lateral entry students at KCG? What are the charges?
Ans. Yes, hostel is available on campus for both boys and girls. It is not mandatory. Hostel fees range from Rs. 95,000/year (common bathroom) to approximately Rs. 1,00,000/year (attached bathroom). The campus is located at Karapakkam, OMR, Chennai, and the college provides bus facilities covering most parts of the city (bus fees: Rs. 10,000–33,000/year depending on distance).
Ques. The Mechatronics department at KCG was established only in 2019. Should I be concerned about placements and industry recognition?
Ans. While the department is relatively new, KCG College as an institution has a strong placement record (91% placement rate in 2025) and well-established industry connections. The Mechatronics curriculum is designed in line with Industry 4.0 requirements, and students benefit from the college's overall placement infrastructure. The department has strong industry partnerships and students engage with professional bodies like The Robotics Society of India. However, as the department matures, placement data specific to Mechatronics will become more robust. Students are encouraged to supplement their degree with certifications in PLC, SCADA, robotics, and embedded systems for better placement outcomes.
