VIIT Pune Admission Process

VIIT Pune B.Tech admission runs through two routes: the DTE Maharashtra Centralised Admission Process (CAP) and the institute-level (management quota) process. CAP accounts for the majority of seats.

B.Tech Admission

Eligibility requires 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics, plus one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science, IT, Electronics, or Engineering Graphics. Minimum aggregate is 45% PCM for Open category and 40% PCM for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates from Maharashtra.

CAP process follows three stages: MHT-CET or JEE Main score determines merit rank, candidates register on cetcell.mahacet.org and fill college and branch preferences, and seat allotment is announced across multiple CAP rounds. Maharashtra state candidates fill 85% of seats through MHT-CET. All India category (including J&K migrants) fills 15% through JEE Main. Up to 20% of seats are available through VIIT’s Institute Level (IL) direct admission process, with minimum 45% in 10+2 PCM required. Computer Engineering cutoff at VIIT Pune for Open category has typically required an MHT-CET percentile in the 98 to 99 range.

B.Tech Lateral Entry and M.Tech Admission

Lateral entry to second year B.Tech is open to diploma holders in relevant engineering branches with 45% aggregate, through Maharashtra DSE CAP. M.Tech admission requires a valid GATE score and B.E./B.Tech in the relevant discipline. Allotment is through DTE Maharashtra M.Tech CAP on cetcell.mahacet.org.

VIIT: 32 Answered Questions

Out of VIT Pune and Symbiosis Institute of Technology Pune, which should I choose?

Sayantani Barman
Chandni Rohit

between VIT Pune (Vishwakarma Institute of Technology) and SIT Pune (Symbiosis Institute of Technology), the choice depends mainly on your branch and budget:

for CSE specifically — SIT Pune has a slight edge in brand due to the Symbiosis group name, better coding culture, and slightly better placement numbers. MIT Pune is actually the better option among private Pune colleges for CSE, but between just these two, SIT Pune > VIT Pune for software careers.

however, the bigger picture that most answers miss:

  • if PICT Pune is an option for you — PICT > both SIT and VIT Pune by a wide margin for CS (much lower fees, excellent placements)
  • if MIT Pune (MAEER's MIT) is an option — MIT Pune is generally considered above both SIT and VIT Pune in overall reputation
  • VIT Pune (Vishwakarma) recently got university status and is now also called Vishwakarma University — same institution, growing

fees comparison: SIT Pune ~Rs.2-2.5L/year, VIT Pune ~Rs.1.5-2L/year. SIT's slightly higher fees come with the Symbiosis brand. if you can afford it and are choosing between just these two for CSE — go SIT Pune. if budget is tight and you want a decent Pune college, VIT Pune is not bad at all.

Is there any difference between VIT Pune and VIIT Pune?

Sayantani Barman
Bhanu Gupta

yeah they're different colleges! both run by same trust (BRACT) but separate campuses.

  • VIT Pune — main campus in Bibwewadi, since 1983, NAAC A++, NIRF ~100-150
  • VIIT Pune — secondary campus in Kondhwa, also autonomous, NIRF ~165

VIT is clearly better for placements. one thing nobody explains properly — some companies at placement drives don't allow VIIT students to sit, only VIT ones. so the shared placements aren't really equal in practice.

also heads up — VIT Pune has nothing to do with VIT Vellore. completely different institutions. VIT Vellore is a deemed university in Tamil Nadu. VIT Pune is in Maharashtra under Pune University. a lot of people Google VIT placements and accidentally read Vellore data thinking it's Pune — don't make that mistake when researching!

How is Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology?

FearlessFarmer

I’m currently pursuing my Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering at VIIT, and I feel the curriculum is well-structured and relevant. The teaching staff is helpful, and many have extensive experience in the field. There are two exams each semester, and while they can be challenging, they are also manageable with the right preparations.

Regarding placements, the college has a good track record, with around 80% of students getting placed. The highest package reported was around 11.4 LPA, which is impressive. The campus life could be better, but the annual fest, Gandharva, is a highlight of the year.

What is your review of Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology Pune?

BeardedBard

As someone who studies at VIT Pune, here's how I'd rate it:

Campus: If you're into huge campuses, you might find VIT a bit small since it only covers 24 acres.

Accommodation: The VIT hostel isn't very well-known for its accommodation, but you can find nicely furnished apartments at Lake Town.

Food and Hygiene: The food at Khau Gali is tasty, though the cleanliness is just okay.

Placements: Around 120 companies come to VIT each year for campus placements, with an average salary of about 3 lakhs.

Co-curricular Activities: VIT hosts several events and festivals, which are quite enjoyable.

Tie-ups: VIT has partnerships with international universities in places like Singapore, Germany, Binghamton, and France.

Faculty: The teachers here are excellent, and the curriculum is well-designed for learning.

Hows life at VIIT Pune?

UnseenUrchin

Life at VIIT Pune is pretty similar to other colleges like MIT, COEP, and PICT. It mostly focuses on exams, festivals, and extracurricular activities, plus the usual lectures. Since the campus isn't that big, you'll often run into friends from different departments. The friend groups you make in the first year usually stay together all the way through college.

Each semester is packed with five tough periods and two fun breaks. The stressful times include class tests, midterms, final submissions, finals, and results. In the first semester, there's Vishwakarandak and the Diwali Break, while the second semester has Melange and Vishwotsav. First-year and second-year students can attend the Freshers' Welcome in the first semester, while third-year and B.Tech students have Farewell events. There's a ton of other cool stuff happening throughout the year, like Vishwaprenuer and TEDxVITPune.

It's a great idea to get involved in things outside of lectures. Joining the student council, Zephyr (Dance), sports teams, or clubs like ROBOCON, BAJA, and SUPRA can really be beneficial.

The student crowd is pretty diverse. You'll find gym enthusiasts, procrastinators, academic types, rebels, music fans, Potterheads, math geniuses, top programmers, spoiled kids, popular figures, couples, and more. It's hard not to find someone you click with.

Academics mainly revolve around the GPA, known as the Pointer. To most parents, teachers, and students, this is what defines you. There's not much of a link between intelligence and your GPA. A smart student might have a low GPA, while an average one could score high. The system values hard work over talent, which seems fair. About half the professors hold master's or PhD degrees and are generally well-read, helpful, and approachable.

What sets VIT apart is its autonomy. Though it's under the University of Pune, it controls its own curriculum, calendar, and grading system. This gives students an advantage, with fewer result discrepancies and a curriculum that's aligned with industry needs. You also get around four months of vacation each year. Plus, you have bragging rights.

Popular hangout spots on campus include the Boat Club, Minus 2, New Poona Bakery, Fruit Centre, the canteen, and the Mech stairs. Unfortunately, there aren't many good places to hang out outside the college. The nearby slum area can be a downside for some prospective students. There aren't any big malls, theaters, or fast-food chains nearby, but that doesn't stop students from exploring the city.

The college hostel is decent, and there are some good private hostels too. However, many out-of-town students prefer renting flats or living as paying guests. Recently, nice housing societies like Laketown, Maurya Society, and Kumar Pruthvi have sprung up, offering good options for students. So, finding a place to stay isn't too hard.

Finally, about placements—the situation at VIT is quite good, but don't get caught up in the hype. The average package is around 3-4 lakh per year, varying by branch. Computer/IT and E&Tc branches have the best job prospects. Some well-known companies visit, but don't expect any mind-blowing offers. Still, many students opt for further studies.

Overall, VIT is a solid college and ranks among the top in Maharashtra. Life here is enjoyable, and academics aren't overly stressful. It's not as prestigious as an IIT, but it's definitely better than many other engineering colleges.

Which is better VIT Pune AI DS OR VIIT Pune CSE?

QuiveringQuokka

I'd suggest going for VIIT's IT program instead of VIT's AI & DS, mainly because AI & DS is a pretty new field. When it comes to job placements, both colleges offer similar opportunities since they conduct placements together. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide.

How is VIIT college?

KookyKitten

I’ve been studying B.Tech in Information Technology at VIIT and honestly, it has been a mixed experience. The faculty is quite knowledgeable, with many having PhDs, which is great. The curriculum is updated regularly, aligning with industry needs, but I feel that our coding modules could use more depth.

The exams are moderate, and I found that studying for a couple of weeks before them is usually enough to pass. As for placements, the college has a decent record, with many companies visiting, but I’ve heard some students struggle to secure offers. Overall, it’s a decent choice if you’re aiming for a career in IT.

What is your review of Vishwakarma Institute of Technology Pune?

MarvelousMason

At Vishwakarma Institute of Technology in Pune, students get to experience a great mix of academics and extracurricular activities. The teaching quality is top-notch, and the faculty is really supportive. With many students aiming to study abroad these days, VIT offers student exchange programs to places like Singapore and Korea, which is a great opportunity. Some people think that because VIT is autonomous, the syllabus isn't finished properly and that students get question banks before exams. But that's just a myth; the syllabus is always completed on time, and there are no such question banks. VIT is well-regarded internationally.

VIT offers various branches such as:

  • Computer engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Electronics and Telecommunication
  • Electronics
  • Instrumentation
  • Production
  • Industrial
  • Chemical

The exams here are quite challenging, and students really need to think like engineers to do well. There aren't any easy marks to grab; I've seen students miss passing by just 0.8 marks. The campus is clean and has four canteens offering good food. The college runs in two shifts, and the library is stocked with tons of books for all branches. The labs are also well-equipped with everything needed.
