PSG iTech BE Lateral Mechanical FAQs
Ques. Can a diploma holder in Mechanical Engineering from any state apply for lateral entry at PSG iTech, or is it only for Tamil Nadu diploma holders?
Ans. The TNLEA government quota seats are primarily for candidates domiciled in Tamil Nadu. However, candidates from other states may apply for management quota seats directly through the college. For government quota, Tamil Nadu domicile is mandatory.
Ques. What is the difference between joining PSG iTech through TNLEA government quota vs. management quota for lateral entry Mechanical Engineering?
Ans. Government quota seats (65% of intake) are allotted through TNLEA counselling based on diploma marks, and the fee is as per government-regulated norms (approximately Rs. 1,15,000 per year). Management quota seats (35%) are filled directly by the college, and the fees are significantly higher (approximately Rs. 1,80,000-2,00,000 per year). Academic experience and placement opportunities are the same for both.
Ques. Will lateral entry students at PSG iTech get the same placement opportunities as regular 4-year BE students?
Ans. Yes. Lateral entry students join the 2nd year (3rd semester) and complete the remaining 3 years of the programme. They are eligible for the same campus placement process as regular students, including pre-placement training, mock interviews, and company visits. Companies like Caterpillar, Ashok Leyland, Renault Nissan, and Maruti Suzuki have recruited Mechanical Engineering students from PSG iTech.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for lateral entry students at PSG iTech? What are the facilities?
Ans. Yes, hostel accommodation is available for both boys and girls on campus. The hostel fee is approximately Rs. 1,25,000 per year (inclusive of mess charges). Facilities include separate gyms for boys and girls, a dining hall, study rooms, and Wi-Fi. Hostel is optional and not mandatory for the programme.
Ques. PSG iTech recently became autonomous. How does this affect lateral entry Mechanical Engineering students?
Ans. PSG iTech received autonomous status from 2026-27. This means the college now has the freedom to design its own curriculum, conduct internal examinations, and award degrees under Anna University. For lateral entry students joining from 2026-27 onwards, the curriculum may be updated and more industry-relevant compared to the earlier Anna University-prescribed syllabus. Examination patterns and grading may also differ from earlier batches.
Ques. What is the minimum CGPA required to be eligible for campus placements at PSG iTech for Mechanical Engineering?
Ans. Most companies visiting PSG iTech for Mechanical Engineering placements require a minimum CGPA of 7.0 to 7.5 (on a 10-point scale). Some premium companies may have higher CGPA cutoffs. Students are advised to maintain a consistent academic record throughout the programme to maximise placement opportunities. Lateral entry students should note that their diploma marks do not count towards the BE CGPA; only the marks obtained in the 3-year BE programme are considered.
