Asteroids and meteoroids are celestial bodies sharing a few common characteristics like staying close to the planets and orbiting the sun. An asteroid is an object made of rock, metal, or carbon. It is a leftover from the formation of the solar system. A meteoroid is a small particle separated or accidentally detached from a comet or asteroid. Both of them inspire awe and wonder in humans.

Asteroids are also known as minor planets or planetoids of the inner solar system. They are found mainly in the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars. There are millions of asteroids in the asteroid belt. They are rocky bodies that do not have an atmosphere but because of their size, they have a gravitational pull. A few of them have their own moons. They are said to be remains of planetesimal bodies within the sun’s solar nebula which never grew to become full-grown planets. Currently, the known asteroid count is 1,113, 527.

Asteroids fall into three categories based on their composition.

  • C-type or carbonaceous asteroids

They are most common grayish-colored asteroids that inhabit the main belt's outer regions. They probably consist of clay and stony silicate rocks and include more than 75% of known asteroids.

  • The S-type or silicaceous asteroids

They are greenish and reddish asteroids that dominate the inner asteroid belt. They appear to be made of silicate materials and nickel-iron and account for almost 17% of known asteroids.

  • The M-type or metallic asteroids

They are reddish color asteroids that dwell in the middle region of the main asteroid belt. They make up most of the rest of the asteroids. They seem like they are made up of nickel-iron.

Meteoroids are pieces of interplanetary matter that are frequently only the size of millimeters. When they enter the atmosphere of the Earth, they vaporize completely and might never reach the surface. Meteoroids burn during descent and create a trail of light. This trail of light leads them to be sometimes called a shooting star. In general, meteoroids are harmless but some of the larger meteoroids may explode in the atmosphere and create shock waves.
