NIOS Class 10 Board Exam 2026: Exam Dates, Syllabus, Admit Card, Result and Eligibility

The NIOS Class 10 Board Exam 2026, officially called the Secondary Examination, is conducted twice a year by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), a national-level open board under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. More than 1.15 lakh students appeared in the April-May 2026 session, and the result has now been declared with an overall pass percentage of 66.92%. NIOS is widely recognised as the largest open schooling system in the world, offering flexible, self-paced education to school dropouts, working professionals, homemakers, and others who cannot attend regular schools. The NIOS Class 10 certificate is accepted as equivalent to CBSE and all state boards for higher education and employment purposes.

• Re-evaluation Deadline: The re-evaluation window for the NIOS Class 10 April 2026 result closes on June 29, 2026 — just 2 days from now. Students unhappy with their marks must apply at sdmis.nios.ac.in before this date. Last year (2025), the re-evaluation window lasted approximately 15 days after result declaration.
• Exam Fee — October/November 2026 Session: The exam fee submission window for the October/November 2026 session is in the late-fee phase. You can pay with a late fee of ₹150 per subject until June 30, 2026. After that, a consolidated late fee of ₹1,600 per learner applies from July 1–10, 2026 — after which the window closes.
• New Admission (Block I — April/May 2027 Exam): NIOS is accepting fresh admissions for the upcoming Block I cycle (April/May 2027 exams) from March 16, 2026. The last date to apply without any late fee is July 31, 2026. Admission fees for General female candidates (5 subjects) start at ₹1,890.
• October/November 2026 Theory Exams: Theory exams for the upcoming October/November 2026 session are expected in October–November 2026. Practical exams are expected in September 2026. In 2025, theory exams ran from October 14 to November 18 — the 2026 schedule is likely to follow a similar pattern.

What is NIOS Class 10 Board Exam 2026?

The NIOS Class 10 Board Exam, officially known as the Secondary Examination, is a national-level open board examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). NIOS was established in 1989 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and is recognised as a national board equivalent to CBSE, ICSE, and all state boards. The NIOS Class 10 certificate is accepted by central and state governments, universities, and colleges across India for admission to higher studies and for employment purposes.

NIOS is widely considered the largest open schooling system in the world. More than 4.13 million learners have enrolled in NIOS in the last five years. It operates through 23 regional centres, 2 sub-regional centres, and over 7,400 Accredited Institutions (AIs) — or study centres — across India and in international locations including UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Nepal, Canada, the UK, the USA, Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The exam is specifically designed for learners who could not complete their schooling through the regular school system. This includes school dropouts, students who failed Class 10 in other boards (CBSE, ICSE, or state boards), working professionals, homemakers, persons with disabilities, and NRIs. There is no upper age limit for admission, and even a student as young as 14 years can enrol. The self-paced nature of NIOS means learners can study using printed or digital study materials at home, supplemented by face-to-face sessions at study centres.

What Makes NIOS Different from Regular Boards?

NIOS gives students flexibility that regular boards do not. You can appear for exams twice a year (April/May and October/November) or use the On-Demand Exam (ODE) to clear one subject at a time at a preferred date. If you have passed some subjects in another board, you can transfer those marks to NIOS through the Transfer of Credit (TOC) facility — so you only need to clear the subjects you failed.

NIOS Class 10 Eligibility Criteria 2026

The NIOS Class 10 eligibility criteria are much more flexible than regular school boards. The main requirement is that you must have passed Class 8 from any recognised school or board. There is no upper age limit, making NIOS accessible to learners of all ages and backgrounds.

• Minimum age: 14 years as of January 31 of the admission year
• Maximum age: No upper age limit

Educational Qualification

• Must have passed Class 8 from any recognised school or board
• No minimum percentage in Class 8 — a simple pass is sufficient
• If you do not have a formal Class 8 certificate, NIOS may accept a self-declaration of adequate preparation in some cases

Who Can Apply for NIOS Class 10?

Transfer of Credits (TOC)

If you have already passed some subjects in Class 10 from another board (CBSE, ICSE, or a state board) but failed in others, NIOS allows you to transfer your passed subject marks. You only need to clear the subjects you failed — you do not need to repeat subjects you have already passed. This facility is called Transfer of Credit (TOC) and carries a fee of ₹180 per subject transferred.

You cannot appear simultaneously in NIOS and any other board’s Class 10 examination in the same session. Doing so can lead to cancellation of your NIOS enrolment.

NIOS Class 10 Admission and Registration 2026

The NIOS Class 10 admission process is done entirely online through the SDMIS (Student Data Management and Information System) portal. You first need to identify an Accredited Institution (AI) — your study centre — near your home, then complete the online registration. Fresh admissions for Block I (April/May 2027 exams) are currently open with a no-late-fee deadline of July 31, 2026.

• Visit sdmis.nios.ac.in and click on "New Admission"
• Select your state, identity type, and course (Secondary = Class 10)
• Enter your Aadhaar / PAN / Passport details and verify using OTP
• Fill in personal details — name, father’s name, gender, date of birth, mobile number, and address
• Select your preferred Accredited Institution (study centre)
• Choose a minimum of 5 subjects (at least 1 language) and your preferred exam centre
• Upload all required documents in JPG/JPEG format within the specified size limits
• Review all entered details carefully before final submission
• Pay the admission fee online using debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI

NIOS Class 10 Syllabus 2026

The NIOS Class 10 syllabus follows NCERT guidelines and covers all major academic subjects. NIOS publishes its own self-learning materials (SLMs) based on this syllabus, which are designed for self-study. Mathematics Syllabus

NIOS Class 10 Admit Card 2026

The NIOS Class 10 admit card — also called the hall ticket — is released separately for practical and theory examinations. For the April 2026 session, the practical admit card was released in March 2026 and the theory admit card was made available before April 10, 2026. The next admit card (for the October/November 2026 session) is expected to be released in September–October 2026, once exam dates are announced.

You must carry a colour printout of the admit card to the examination hall. Students who do not have a valid admit card are not allowed inside the exam centre.

Why Your Admit Card May Not Appear

Your admit card may not appear or may be incomplete if:

• Your exam fee has not been fully paid for that session
• Your photograph is not uploaded or has not been approved in NIOS records
• You have not registered for the public examination
• Your TMA (Tutor Marked Assignment) is pending for a particular subject

If your admit card does not show all your selected subjects, contact your Accredited Institution immediately — pending TMA submissions or exam fee shortfall are the most common reasons.

NIOS Class 10 On-Demand Exam (ODE) 2026

The NIOS On-Demand Exam (ODE) is one of NIOS’s most distinctive features. It lets eligible learners appear for one subject at a time, at a date of their choice, without waiting for the fixed public exam schedule. ODE is available throughout the year except in April, May, October, and November — which are reserved for the public exam sessions.

ODE is especially useful if you have cleared most subjects but need to pass 1 or 2 remaining ones. Instead of waiting up to 6 months for the next public exam, you can appear in ODE and get results within approximately 45 days.

Public Exam vs On-Demand Exam (ODE)

When Should You Choose ODE?

• You have failed in only 1 or 2 subjects and want to clear them quickly
• You want to improve marks in a subject you passed but want a better score
• You cannot wait 6 months for the next public exam session
• You are close to the end of your 5-year validity and need to clear remaining subjects fast

ODE is available for Stream 1 learners only after they have appeared in at least one public exam session. First-time learners must appear in a public exam before they become eligible for ODE.

Preparation Tips for NIOS Class 10 2026

If you plan to appear in the NIOS Class 10 October/November 2026 exam, you have roughly 4 months to prepare. NIOS exams are based on NCERT-aligned content, and the passing threshold is 30% in each subject — but aiming for 60% or more is strongly recommended if you intend to use this certificate for further studies or competitive applications.

• Start with Official NIOS Study Materials (SLMs): NIOS publishes self-learning materials for every subject, written specifically for the NIOS syllabus and exam pattern. Download them free from nios.ac.in, or buy printed copies from your nearest NIOS Regional Centre. These SLMs are different from CBSE NCERT textbooks — start with them, not just regular textbooks.
• Attend Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs): Your Accredited Institution runs face-to-face teaching sessions called PCPs. These are especially valuable for Mathematics and Science, where concept clarity matters. PCPs also give you a chance to ask your tutor questions directly and get your doubts solved.
• Submit All TMAs on Time: Tutor Marked Assignments carry 20 marks per subject and are added directly to your theory score. Missing a TMA deadline can mean your admit card is not issued for that subject, which means you cannot appear in the exam. Submit all TMAs at least 2 weeks before the deadline.
• Practise Sample Question Papers and Previous Year Papers: NIOS publishes official sample question papers and previous year papers for each subject on its website. Practise at least 3–4 papers per subject to understand the format, difficulty level, and time management needed for each 3-hour paper.
• Focus on High-weightage Topics by Subject: In Mathematics, spend more time on Algebra and Geometry, which carry the most marks. In Science, Biology and Chemistry chapters are more frequently tested. In Social Science, History and Geography chapters tend to have more questions than Political Science. Knowing the weight of each section helps you study efficiently.
• Attempt All Questions — There Is No Negative Marking: NIOS theory exams have no negative marking. Always attempt every question, even if you are unsure — writing something relevant is always better than a blank answer. For MCQs, eliminate wrong options and make your best guess.
• Plan Ahead for Practical Exams: If you have chosen Science and Technology, 15 of the 100 marks come from the practical exam conducted at your study centre. Practise practical exercises well in advance and confirm the practical exam schedule and requirements with your AI — missing the practical can significantly affect your score.
• Use DigiLocker for Your Documents: NIOS issues digital mark sheets and certificates on DigiLocker. Link your DigiLocker account to the mobile number you registered with NIOS. This lets you access your admit card, result, and certificates digitally at any time, from anywhere — and these are officially accepted as proof of qualification.
