What is TN HSC 2027?

The Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examination 2027 — commonly called TN HSC 2027 or TN +2 Exam 2027 — is the Class 12 board exam conducted by the Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu (TNDGE). It is an annual, state-level written exam that students must clear to receive their Class 12 certificate, which is required for college admissions, competitive exams, and government job eligibility across India.

The exam is conducted for students studying under the Tamil Nadu Samacheer Kalvi (uniform education) curriculum, following textbooks published by the Tamil Nadu State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). All students in Tamil Nadu — whether in government, government-aided, or private schools affiliated with the Tamil Nadu State Board — appear for the same set of papers.

Every year, more than 8 lakh students register for the TN HSC exam. In 2026, a total of 7,91,654 students appeared, of whom 7,53,694 passed, giving an overall pass percentage of 95.20%. Girls consistently outperform boys — in 2026, the girls’ pass rate was 97.00%.

Streams Offered Under TN HSC 2027

Students in Class 12 appear for one of the following subject groups, based on the group they studied in Class 11:

• Science Group — Mathematics (PCM): Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and one optional subject such as Computer Science or Economics
• Science Group — Biology (PCB): Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and one optional subject
• Commerce Group: Accountancy, Commerce, Business Mathematics or Economics, and one optional subject
• Arts / Humanities Group: History, Geography, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, or related subjects
• Vocational Group: Trade-specific vocational subjects combined with standard academic papers

In addition to the core group subjects, every student must study two language papers — Part I (Tamil or another regional language such as Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, or Hindi) and Part II (English). Each student therefore appears for a total of 6 subjects for a maximum of 600 marks.

The TN HSC marksheet and final marks are used for admissions to engineering colleges via TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions conducted by Anna University), arts and science colleges via government counselling, and as qualifying marks for NEET and other national-level examinations.

TN HSC 2027 Eligibility Criteria

To appear for the TN HSC 2027 exam, you must meet the conditions set by TNDGE. The requirements differ slightly for regular students and private or improvement candidates.

For Regular Students (School-Going)

• You must have passed Class 11 (Higher Secondary First Year) from a school affiliated with the Tamil Nadu State Board
• You must be studying in Class 12 (Higher Secondary Second Year) at the same or an affiliated Tamil Nadu State Board school
• You must have a minimum attendance of 75% in Class 12. If you fall short, your school must apply for a condonation of shortage of attendance with the competent authority
• You must clear all dues to the school and complete the internal assessment components before the exams begin
• Regular students do not need to register separately — your school handles registration through the EMIS (Education Management Information System) portal

For Private Candidates (Ex-Students / Failed Candidates)

• Students who failed in one or two subjects in a previous TN HSC exam can appear as private candidates specifically for those subjects
• Candidates who failed all subjects in a previous attempt can also appear as private candidates for a full re-attempt
• You must have passed Class 11 from the Tamil Nadu State Board at some point
• There is no upper age restriction for private candidates
• Private candidates must register directly through the TNDGE online portal

For Improvement Candidates

• Students who have already passed TN HSC but want to improve their marks in specific subjects can appear as improvement candidates
• Improvement is allowed in one or more subjects
• The higher of the two marks — original or improvement — is typically considered for admission purposes, depending on the institution

Subject Group Requirement

You must appear for the same subject group in Class 12 that you enrolled for in Class 11. Switching streams between Class 11 and Class 12 is generally not permitted under Tamil Nadu State Board rules. Any change must be approved by the school and the competent educational authority before the start of the Class 12 academic year.

TN HSC 2027 Registration Process

Registration for Regular Students

If you are studying in Class 12 at a Tamil Nadu State Board affiliated school, you do not need to register directly. Your school registers you for the public exam through the EMIS (Education Management Information System) portal. Make sure your school has your correct details — full name, date of birth, caste category, and the correct subject group. Any corrections to your registered details must be made through your school before the final submission deadline set by TNDGE. Confirm with your school that your registration is complete and accurate by November–December 2026.

Registration for Private and Improvement Candidates

Documents Required for Private Candidates

• Recent passport-size photograph (scanned)
• Scanned signature

Application Fee

The application fee for private and improvement candidates is collected during online registration. Fee amounts are notified by TNDGE at the time of the official registration announcement. Concessions on application fees are available for students belonging to SC, ST, and other eligible categories as per Tamil Nadu government norms.

TN HSC 2027 Admit Card (Hall Ticket)

The TN HSC 2027 hall ticket (admit card) is expected to be available in late February 2027. In 2026, TNDGE released the admit card on February 23, 2026 — approximately one week before the exams began on March 2. You need to carry the hall ticket on every single day of the examination without exception.

The process is different for regular and private candidates:

• Regular students: You will receive your hall ticket directly from your school. Your school downloads and distributes hall tickets to all registered students a few days before the exams begin.

Students currently in Class 12 as of September 2026 have roughly 5 to 6 months before the March 2027 theory exams. Here is a structured set of strategies to help you make the most of this time.

1. Samacheer Kalvi Textbooks Are Your Primary Source

The entire TN HSC exam comes from Samacheer Kalvi Class 12 textbooks. You do not need expensive coaching materials for every subject. Read each chapter carefully — definitions, worked-out examples within the chapter, and all exercise questions can appear in the board exam. Start with the textbook before picking up any additional guides.

2. Solve Previous Year Question Papers

Solving TN HSC question papers from 2022 to 2026 shows you exactly what TNDGE expects. You will quickly see which chapters they ask from most often and which question types come from which topics. This also builds your exam temperament and improves your time management.
