What is a Hypertonic solution?

Hypertonic solution is a solution with higher osmotic pressure as compared to another solution. Hence, a hypertonic solution has a greater number of solute particles outside than inside the membrane.

  • Tonicity measures the osmotic pressure gradient of 2 fluids divided by a semipermeable membrane.
  • The three types of tonicity that a solution can have include – Hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic.
  • An example of a hypertonic solution is the interior of an RBC as compared with the solute concentration of freshwater.
  • Cells shrink inside hypertonic solutions.

Solutions

Across a semipermeable membrane, the movement of water takes place to equalize the concentration of solute particles. Water moves from the hypotonic side of a membrane (less concentrated) to the hypertonic side (less concentrated). The flow continues until the solutions become isotonic.
