ESMT Berlin Eligibility for Indian Students
ESMT Berlin is a graduate-only business school, so all admissions criteria apply to postgraduate applicants. Indian students meet the academic bar with a strong Bachelor’s degree of at least three years, though four-year engineering, science, or business degrees are the most competitive profiles.
- Master programs (MIM, MAAI, MIE): Bachelor’s-equivalent with strong grades and up to 24 months work experience.
- Full-time MBA: Bachelor’s plus a minimum three years of consecutive postgraduate professional experience.
- Executive MBA: Bachelor’s plus at least seven years of professional experience with leadership responsibility.
- Global Online MBA: Bachelor’s plus three years of professional experience.
- PhD: Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with a strong research track.
English proficiency is a mandatory bar for Indian applicants unless a waiver applies. Accepted tests and minimum scores are listed below.
| Test | Minimum Score |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 overall |
| TOEFL iBT | 95 |
| PTE Academic | 64 |
| TOEIC | 850 |
ESMT Berlin IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Indian applicants can skip an English test in three cases. First, if the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree was taught entirely in English, a medium-of-instruction letter from the university suffices. Second, native English speakers are exempt. Third, for MBA variants only, ESMT waives the test if the applicant has spent 12 months or more in an English-language work environment, a common route for Indian software and consulting professionals.
ESMT Berlin Master Programs Overview
ESMT Berlin runs three two-year Master programs, each starting in September and using the same institutional entry bar. Base tuition is €36,000 (₹39.52 Lakhs) across all three. Living costs, blocked account, and visa fees are separate and are covered on the fees page.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master in Global Management (MIM) | 24 months | Bachelor’s-equivalent with strong grades and up to 24 months of postgraduate work experience | IELTS 7.0 |
| Master in Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (MAAI) | 24 months | Bachelor’s in a quantitative or STEM discipline with strong grades | IELTS 7.0 |
| Master in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIE) | 24 months | Bachelor’s-equivalent with strong grades and entrepreneurial motivation | IELTS 7.0 |
All three programs are open to Indian applicants for the September 2027 intake, with applications expected to open in late 2026. GMAT or GRE is not mandatory if the Bachelor’s shows strong quantitative coursework. The ESMT Business Admissions Test (BAT) is a $100 alternative for candidates who need a formal quant signal.
Insider note: ESMT’s Master intakes are small (about 60 to 90 seats per program) and are reviewed on a rolling basis. Submitting in the first two months of the open cycle materially improves your chances.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official ESMT Berlin page for your chosen program before applying.
ESMT Berlin Full-time MBA Rounds
ESMT Berlin’s 15-month full-time MBA has a January 2027 intake and a cohort of about 70 seats. Base tuition is €50,000 (₹54.89 Lakhs). Applications run in rolling rounds with a €100 (₹10,977) fee per submission.
ESMT Berlin MBA Rounds and Test Policy
| Round | Deadline | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Round 6 | 15 September 2026 | Closing Soon |
| Round 7 | 31 October 2026 | Open |
| Round 8 (space-available) | 8 December 2026 | Open |
Applicants submit one of GMAT, GRE, GMAC Executive Assessment, or ESMT’s own Business Admissions Test (BAT, $100). No minimum score is published, though the Class of 2025 averaged around 640 on the GMAT. Three years of consecutive postgraduate work experience is the hard floor.
ESMT Berlin MBA Interview Format
Shortlisted candidates are invited to a 40 to 50 minute interview at the Berlin campus or over Zoom, held about one to two weeks after each round closes. Interviews are conducted by senior faculty or admissions staff and cover motivation, leadership, and quantitative reasoning. Decisions typically follow within two weeks of the interview.
ESMT also runs two other MBA formats for working professionals:
- Executive MBA: October 2026, €64,800 (₹71.13 Lakhs), 7 years’ experience, €4,000 (₹4.39 Lakhs) deposit.
- Global Online MBA: 19 October 2026 start, €28,000 (₹30.74 Lakhs), 3 years’ experience.
Reality check: Indian applicants without a GMAT face a stronger scrutiny bar. Even where waivers exist, a 680+ GMAT strengthens Round 7 and Round 8 applications, when merit scholarships are near depleted.
ESMT Berlin PhD Admission Steps
ESMT Berlin’s doctoral program runs through the Berlin School of Economics (BSoE), a joint doctoral platform with Humboldt, Free University, and Technical University Berlin. Tuition is fully waived, and enrolled candidates receive stipend-based funding for the four-to-five-year program.
- Application window: Opens November 2026 for the September 2027 cohort.
- Eligibility: Master’s degree in a related discipline with strong research output.
- Test requirements: GRE strongly recommended, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 95.
- Selection: Research proposal, transcripts, references, and a supervisor interview.
Funding covers stipend, health insurance contribution, and a research allowance. For the 2026 to 2027 academic year the base stipend is roughly €18,000 to €22,000 annually (₹19.76 to ₹24.15 Lakhs), varying by cohort year and chair. Indian applicants should confirm the current stipend on the BSoE funding page before applying.
Planning note: ESMT PhD admits are typically decided from a pool of 200-plus applicants for around 8 to 12 seats per year. Contact a prospective supervisor before submitting, since a warm introduction materially helps the shortlist decision.
ESMT Berlin Application Process
All ESMT Berlin applications are submitted through the school’s own portal at apply.esmt.berlin. There is no central platform like uni-assist involved, and ESMT reviews every application in-house. The steps below apply to Master and MBA applicants, while PhD applicants follow the Berlin School of Economics workflow.
- Create an account on apply.esmt.berlin and select your target program and intake.
- Complete the online form with academic history, work experience, and short essays on motivation and career goals.
- Upload transcripts, degree certificates, CV, and English test results (unless waived).
- Request one to two professional recommendations sent directly through the portal.
- Pay the application fee of €75 (₹8,233) for Masters or €100 (₹10,977) for MBA on the apply.esmt.berlin portal.
- Submit before your target round deadline. Incomplete files are not reviewed.
- If shortlisted, complete the 40-minute admissions interview via Zoom or on the Berlin campus.
Master applicants can request a pre-assessment before formal submission, which is useful for Indian students unsure whether the ESMT quantitative bar is a fit. For a course-wise fee breakdown, check the ESMT Berlin programs page.
ESMT Berlin Admission Decisions and Offers
ESMT Berlin issues decisions on rolling timelines depending on the program. Understanding the offer-to-acceptance window helps Indian applicants plan APS clearance, visa filing, and travel bookings without avoidable stress.
- MBA decisions: Released within two weeks of the interview, usually four to six weeks after the round deadline.
- Master decisions: Released on a rolling basis, typically four to eight weeks after full submission.
- Offer acceptance: Admitted MBA candidates pay a €4,000 (₹4.39 Lakhs) deposit to secure the seat, credited toward tuition.
- Deferral policy: One-year deferrals are considered case-by-case for reasons like delayed visa or medical grounds.
- Conditional offers: Common for applicants finishing a Bachelor’s or whose English test result is pending.
Indian admits should start the APS certification process the day an offer is received. APS clearance from the German embassy takes 6 to 10 weeks and is a hard prerequisite for the student visa file.
Documents Required for ESMT Berlin
The document checklist below is common across Master and MBA files, with two Indian-specific additions: the APS certificate and passport-format photos. Upload legible PDF scans through the apply.esmt.berlin portal. Certified translations are needed only where the original document is not in English.
- Valid Indian passport with at least 18 months’ validity.
- Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated transcripts (all semesters).
- Master’s transcripts, where applicable for PhD applicants.
- APS certificate from the German embassy in New Delhi.
- Updated CV or resume of one to two pages.
- Statement of purpose or motivation essay per the program prompt.
- One to two professional recommendation letters, submitted online.
- English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or TOEIC), unless waived.
- GMAT, GRE, or BAT score report (MBA applicants; optional for Masters).
- Recent passport-size photograph in digital format.
- Proof of work experience for MBA and EMBA applicants: letters from each employer.
ESMT Berlin Acceptance Rate
ESMT Berlin does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Its full-time MBA is estimated at 16 to 30 percent, based on the roughly 70-seat cohort and applicant pool signalled in Class of 2025 reporting. Master programs are broadly comparable in selectivity given similar cohort sizes.
What Drives an ESMT Berlin Admit
Quantitative rigour is the single biggest filter. Indian applicants with engineering, mathematics, statistics, or hard-science undergraduate backgrounds convert at higher rates. Work experience quality matters more than raw years. A two-year stint with clear P&L or product ownership beats a five-year individual-contributor track for the MBA.
ESMT Berlin Ranking Band and Applicant Signals
The full-time MBA sits in the top 20 Europe-wide across major MBA league tables, and the Master programs are recognised in the FT Global Masters in Management table. Check the school’s ranking band for the latest year-by-year positions.
Insider note: ESMT admits skew toward candidates who articulate a specific post-degree plan tied to Germany or continental Europe. Vague "global career" essays underperform at the shortlisting stage.
Germany Student Visa for ESMT Berlin Admits
Indian admits to ESMT Berlin need the German National Visa (Type D) for studies, filed at the VFS Global centre serving your jurisdiction: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata. The visa runs on a three-to-six-month lead time and depends on APS clearance and a blocked account.
Financial proof is the largest single documentation step. Applicants must open a blocked account with €11,904 (₹13.07 Lakhs) for the first year of stay, per the 2026 rate set by the Federal Foreign Office. Health insurance for the first three months must be arranged in India before travel. ESMT admits then switch to statutory German health insurance on arrival.
Post-arrival, register your address at the local Bürgeramt within two weeks, apply for the residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde, and open a regular German bank account to receive the blocked account’s monthly release. ESMT’s international office runs orientation sessions covering these steps during welcome week.
2026 update: Germany’s post-study work rules give ESMT graduates 18 months to find a role and switch to an EU Blue Card. Indian candidates on €50,000-plus roles (typical for MBA graduates) qualify immediately for Blue Card sponsorship.
ESMT Berlin Tips and Checklist
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at ESMT Berlin across recent intakes. They cover both the timeline of "when" and the small judgment calls that materially shift the admissions outcome.
- Book APS 10 weeks before deadline: Delhi slots fill in 4 to 6 weeks, and issuance adds 6 to 10 more.
- Take GMAT by month minus four: Buffer time for a retake if the first score misses 650.
- Request LORs 8 weeks out: Give recommenders lead time and share your CV plus target program.
- Draft the essay to a specific chair: Reference a named ESMT faculty member or research group.
- Apply in Round 1 or Round 2 for MBA: Later rounds have depleted scholarships and thinner seat availability.
- Prepare for the video interview cold: ESMT’s Zoom includes a quantitative case, so brush up on ratios and probability.
- Line up the blocked account by month minus three: Fintiba, Expatrio, and Deutsche Bank take 4 to 6 weeks.
- Reach out to Indian alumni first: Sample student experiences before finalising your program pick.
Indian applicants who plan back from the deadline (GMAT first, APS second, LORs third, essays last) clear the workflow with less overlap and stronger written material at every step.
ESMT Berlin admissions run on rolling MBA rounds and a fixed September Master intake, with English scores and APS clearance as the two hard prerequisites for every Indian applicant. Missing a target round by a week rarely costs the seat, but skipping APS or the blocked account until the last month often does.

One of the best parts was how ESMT helps you connect with industry and the alumni. This has helped me to learn a lot and advance in my career.

- ESMT Berlin is a very reputed university in Germany often in the top 10 rankings. Most of the graduates find jobs within 3 months of graduation. The curriculum is also carefully designed depending on industry requirements since all the founders of the university are Large German corporations.
- The campus and diversity of student really adds to the experience. The quality of education is really good as compared to Indian universities. There is also lot of options for extracurricular activities during the program which also adds to the non academic experience.
Dislikes
- The course was designed for general management focus and there was no focus on advanced topics such as Machine learning, analytics etc. However, now they have changed the course and there is now a dedicated Masters in AI and Machine Learning which is a good improvement.
Overview
Overall it was a very good experience, the diversity at the university was also very good with around 37 nationalities represented. The courses were also fun and engaging. Post graduation career support is also a huge plus point.
Scholarship
Yes, the early bird scholarship. The only criteria was to apply early to the program. I think this has been removed now.
