| APS India verification | Start 6 months before deadline | Required for German student visa |
| Programme start | September 2026 / September 2027 | 2-year duration |
Planning note: Indian applicants targeting the January 2027 MBA should file Round 6 or 7 to leave a 4-month buffer for APS verification and German student visa slots at the Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or Chennai consulates.
ESMT Berlin Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
ESMT Berlin admission requirements for Indian applicants centre on academic transcripts, standardised test scores, English proficiency and APS India verification. Requirements differ modestly across the MBA and master’s tracks.
PG Requirements (MBA and Masters)
- Bachelor’s degree: Minimum 3-year bachelor’s (180 ECTS) with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 for MBA (recommended); 60-65% or CGPA 6.0-6.5/10 for masters (recommended). Officially stated as "excellent grades".
- English proficiency: IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 5.0 (1-6 scale) / 95 (0-120 legacy scale), PTE 64, TOEIC 850. Waived for English-medium degrees or 12+ months in an English-speaking work environment (MBA only).
- Standardised test: GMAT, GRE, ESMT Business Admissions Test (BAT, USD 100) or GMAC Executive Assessment required for MBA. GMAT or GRE recommended for masters, especially for Master in Analytics and AI.
- APS India certificate: Mandatory for all Indian applicants before the German student visa can be issued; the process takes up to 6 months.
Work Experience
- Full-time MBA: Minimum 3 years postgraduate professional experience
- Executive MBA: Minimum 7 years experience with senior responsibility
- Master in Global Management: No more than 24 months post-graduation experience
- Master in Analytics and AI / Master in Innovation: 0-3 years experience
Key insight: The APS certificate is the single most common visa blocker for Indian applicants to ESMT — start the application on the APS India portal the moment you decide to apply, not after receiving an admission offer.
ESMT Berlin Acceptance Rate 2027
ESMT Berlin does not publish an official acceptance rate. Based on the disclosed cohort size of approximately 70 MBA seats and typical applicant volumes for a triple-crown European B-school, the MBA acceptance rate is estimated at 16-30% (estimated), with a working midpoint of 23%. Master’s programmes are estimated to run in a similar 20-30% band.
The number is not a straight admit percentage — ESMT screens on GMAT/GRE performance, work-experience quality, English proficiency and interview outcome. Indian applicants with GMAT 690+ or GMAT Focus 645+ automatically qualify for the €3,000 Test Score Excellence Award, which functions as a signal of admissibility.
Reality check: A 23% estimate is competitive but not extreme — well-prepared Indian applicants with 3+ years experience, IELTS 7.0 and GMAT 680+ have a realistic shot; the constraint is APS timing more than admissions selectivity itself.

Monthly Cost of Living in Berlin for Indian Students
ESMT recommends a working budget of €1,200 per month for living expenses. Real Berlin costs run a little higher once health insurance and semester social contribution are added.
| Expense | Monthly (EUR) | Monthly (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (shared WG or student dorm) | €450 to €700 | ₹0.50 to 0.77 lakh |

| Transport (Deutschlandticket, monthly) | €58 | ₹6,400 |
| Health insurance (public student) | €148 | ₹0.16 lakh |
| Books and study materials | €30 to €50 | ₹3,300 to 5,500 |
| Personal and utilities | €150 to €200 | ₹0.17 to 0.22 lakh |
| Total monthly | €1,086 to €1,456 | ₹1.20 to 1.60 lakh |
| Total annual (12 months) | €13,032 to €17,472 | ₹14.4 to 19.3 lakh |
[Source: ESMT Berlin recommended budget and Berlin market rates]
Insider note: WG shared apartments near Schöneberg and Kreuzberg run €500-650 per room; the €148 public student health insurance is compulsory and available only to students under 30, so older MBA candidates pay €200-260 per month on private plans.
ESMT Berlin Campus, Facilities and Student Life
ESMT Berlin operates from the former Staatsratsgebäude (State Council building) on Schlossplatz in central Berlin — a heritage building directly across from the Humboldt Forum, with a satellite campus in Berlin-Schöneberg and a branch office in Shanghai.
- Location and transport: Main campus is in Mitte, 8 minutes on foot from Alexanderplatz S-Bahn and U-Bahn hub. Berlin’s public transport network covers the city on one Deutschlandticket monthly pass.
- Housing: ESMT does not run on-campus dormitories; students find housing through the ESMT student portal, HousingAnywhere and WG-Gesucht, with rents typically €500 to €900 per month for a room in central districts.
- Facilities: Historic building interiors house study rooms, a career-services suite, executive-education lounges and the Erich Schumann Center for research, alongside library and case-study rooms.
- Indian community: Indian nationals form 8-15% of most MBA cohorts and typically the largest single non-EU nationality in the master’s programmes; the ESMT Indian Society organises Diwali, cricket and networking events.
What Indian students say: Small cohort size means every student gets individual attention from career services; Berlin’s tech and consulting employer network is more accessible than in Munich or Frankfurt because of the concentration of startups and scaleups.

ESMT is also ranked #14 in the Bloomberg Businessweek European B-Schools 2024, #5 globally and #1 in Germany in the Poets & Quants Best MBA Programs for Entrepreneurship 2025, and #8 in Europe in the Corporate Knights Better World MBA ranking.
Key insight: ESMT’s FT rank has direct visa and hiring value — the school clears the German post-study visa "recognised institution" threshold, and top-100 FT status is the recruiter checkpoint for consulting firms and MBB target lists in Europe.

ESMT Berlin Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
ESMT Berlin publishes strong career outcomes for its MBA and master’s cohorts, driven by Berlin’s concentration of consulting, technology and industrial employers plus the school’s alumni network in 100+ countries.
- MBA employment within 3 months of graduation: 90%+ of the class placed, as reported in the FT MBA 2026 methodology data
- MBA weighted salary (FT MBA 2026): approximately USD 129,000 per year (₹107 lakh) — reflects 3-year post-graduation salary and international placement
- Top hiring sectors: Consulting, technology, industrial goods, financial services, healthcare — as disclosed in FT and school employment reports
- Top recruiters (officially disclosed): McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Amazon, SAP, Siemens, Deloitte, Bosch, Zalando, Rocket Internet
- Post-study work visa: Indian graduates qualify for the German 18-month job-search visa on completion, one of Europe’s longest post-study windows
Insider note: Indian MBA graduates most frequently land in strategy consulting (MBB and Big Four) and tech product management roles at SAP, Zalando and Amazon Berlin — engineering-plus-MBA profiles convert best.
ESMT Berlin vs Peer Universities
ESMT Berlin sits in the top tier of European business schools alongside Mannheim Business School and Frankfurt School in Germany, and INSEAD, IESE and HEC Paris across Europe. The comparison below focuses on programme fee and FT rank as the two variables Indian applicants weight most heavily.
| Business School | FT MBA 2026 Rank | Country | MBA Fee (EUR) | MBA Fee (INR) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ESMT Berlin | #79 | Germany | €50,000 | ₹55.1 lakh | Lowest-fee triple-crown European MBA in Germany |
| Mannheim Business School | #66 | Germany | €49,500 | ₹54.6 lakh | Ranked slightly higher; Mannheim/Rhine-Neckar hiring base |
| Frankfurt School of Finance and Management | Not ranked FT MBA 2026 | Germany | €49,000 | ₹54.0 lakh | Finance and banking specialist |
| HEC Paris | #4 | France | €103,000 | ₹113.6 lakh | Top-5 global; consulting recruiting |
| INSEAD (Fontainebleau) | #3 | France | €109,000 | ₹120.2 lakh | 10-month intensive; MBB placements |
| IE Business School | #43 | Spain | €78,000 | ₹86.0 lakh | Entrepreneurship and Madrid location |
ESMT Berlin’s value proposition is the lowest total cost among triple-crown European MBAs paired with Germany’s 18-month post-study visa. Applicants trading rank for cost typically shortlist ESMT against Mannheim and IE.
ESMT Berlin suits Indian applicants with 3+ years work experience, engineering or consulting backgrounds, and a budget ceiling of ₹75-80 lakh for the full MBA including living costs — the FT top-100 status paired with Germany’s 18-month post-study visa and the industrial-tech employer base in Berlin returns strong ROI against the €50,000 MBA fee and ₹107 lakh post-MBA salary. Compare peer universities in Germany before finalising.
ESMT Berlin is not the right fit for applicants seeking a globally ranked top-25 MBA brand, a large 300-500 seat cohort or a US-heavy recruiter mix — those applicants should consider INSEAD Fontainebleau or IE Business School Madrid instead.
ESMT Berlin FAQs
Ques. Does ESMT Berlin waive GMAT or GRE for Indian MBA applicants?
Ans. ESMT Berlin does not waive the standardised test requirement for the Full-time MBA. Indian applicants must submit a valid GMAT, GRE, GMAC Executive Assessment, or the in-house ESMT Business Admissions Test (BAT) which costs USD 100. Some candidates with strong quant backgrounds sit the BAT to avoid GMAT prep time. The Executive MBA and Global Online MBA also require a test, though profiles with 10+ years work experience may negotiate a case-by-case waiver.
Ques. How does the APS India certificate process work for ESMT applicants?
Ans. The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) India certificate is a document-verification step run by the German embassy in New Delhi. Indian applicants submit degree certificates, mark sheets and passport copies; the office verifies authenticity with issuing universities and returns a certificate valid indefinitely. The process takes up to 6 months and is mandatory before a German student visa can be issued, so start it the moment you decide to apply, not after receiving an ESMT offer.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at ESMT Berlin?
Ans. Yes, German student visa rules allow non-EU students including Indians to work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year alongside studies. ESMT’s Full-time MBA is a 12-month intensive with limited bandwidth for part-time work, though masters students often take on 10-15 hour weekly roles as HiWi research assistants, working students at Berlin startups, or teaching assistants. Hourly rates in Berlin range €12-18 for student roles.
Ques. Which Indian banks fund ESMT Berlin education loans?
Ans. ESMT Berlin partners with Credila for graduate education loans starting at INR 1 lakh minimum without collateral, WeMakeScholars for Indian government-backed loans, and Bank of India for structured education loan programs. Domestic Indian public-sector banks including SBI, BoB and PNB also fund ESMT admits under the standard IBA education loan scheme, though private lenders like HDFC Credila and Avanse typically move faster on disbursement timelines for the January MBA intake.
Ques. What is the interview format for the ESMT Berlin MBA?
Ans. ESMT MBA interviews are conducted via video call in English with a member of the admissions committee or an ESMT alumnus. The 45-60 minute conversation covers career motivation, why ESMT specifically, leadership examples in the STAR format, and situational judgement questions. Indian applicants report scenario-based leadership questions being more prevalent than behavioural ones. The interview is invitation-only after the file review, so a strong essay and CV determine whether you get to the interview stage.
Ques. Are dependants allowed to accompany Indian students at ESMT Berlin?
Ans. Yes, ESMT Berlin students on the German student visa can bring spouses and minor children under the family reunification visa route. Spouses receive their own residence permit and can work full-time in Germany, subject to basic German language proficiency (A1). Financial proof of approximately €12,000 per year for the primary student plus additional per dependant must be shown in a blocked account. This makes ESMT more family-friendly than 1-year MBAs at INSEAD or IE.
Ques. Does ESMT Berlin offer part-time or online MBA options for working Indians?
Ans. Yes, ESMT offers a Global Online MBA priced at €28,000 (₹30.9 lakh) with a flexible schedule and mandatory in-person residencies in Berlin. The Executive MBA runs 3 years part-time at €64,800 (₹71.5 lakh) with monthly Berlin modules for candidates with 7+ years experience. Both formats let Indian working professionals keep their current employer while earning the ESMT degree, though the visa route differs — Online MBA students do not qualify for the 18-month post-study work visa.
Ques. What is the application fee refund policy at ESMT Berlin?
Ans. The application fee is €100 for the Full-time MBA and Executive MBA, €75 for the master’s programmes and €50 for the Global Online MBA. Application fees are non-refundable regardless of admission outcome. The Executive MBA additionally requires a €4,000 deposit once admitted, which is credited toward first-instalment tuition. Applicants who withdraw before the programme start receive tuition instalment refunds on a sliding scale, though the deposit is typically retained.

- We have one campus in Berlin. We have a library, study rooms, cafeteria, and sports such as table tennis and football (we have a college team) highly played in free time. Students from specific ethnicities can organise festivals and invite other students to have a joint celebration. We have nice social clubs (net impact) and other clubs to push for extracurricular activities.
Fees
- 25000 euros to be paid in 4 installments semester-wise, with 4000 euros as the cost to reserve your place. You can get reduced fees through early bird scholarships and merit-based scholarships. - Professors: the professors are very engaged and knowledgeable. They take a personal interest in your learning journey
- Campus and facilities: the campus is beautiful because it’s a heritage building and is protected. It also has lovely study rooms that are private and can be booked
Dislikes
- No job support; they do not support in placement. No companies come to campus.
- Restaurant: The food is actually not great so I don’t love the cafeteria
- Overpriced: to some extent I do think it’s not great value for money. You can get the same/similar content for less money in other colleges

-
ESMT has both amazing equipment as well as courses that are supported by modern lecture halls which still have some of the old architecture. There are study rooms on the 3rd floor and student lounges, as well as a beautiful library with a view of Alexanderplatz
ESMT does partner with some organisations for student lodging but this is not on site. - They have various student clubs and 2 of them I was a part of—the net impact club and the women in leadership club. They have different events like DFS and TEDx where students can form leadership teams and take on the challenges of organising huge events!
Fees
- To officially confirm my enrolment and reserve my place in the class, a first deposit of €4,000 had to be paid no later than four weeks after receiving your acceptance offer.
- This deposit will be deducted from future tuition payments. The remaining tuition fees were to be paid in two equal installments, at the beginning (September) and after the first year of the program. ESMT does not have a hostel.
- Its yearly. At the beginning of each year in September, we need to pay the fee.
- The rent and other expenses can vary very quickly. I was staying in a student accommodation so I paid 500 per month in rent and then of course 49 euros for the DEUTSCHLAND ticket and other regular expenses are groceries and insurance. Insurance is around 130 euros if you go with aTechniker krankenkasse.

- ESMT Berlin is a very reputed university in Germany often in the top 10 rankings. Most of the graduates find jobs within 3 months of graduation. The curriculum is also carefully designed depending on industry requirements since all the founders of the university are Large German corporations.
- The campus and diversity of student really adds to the experience. The quality of education is really good as compared to Indian universities. There is also lot of options for extracurricular activities during the program which also adds to the non academic experience.
