Ludwig Maximillian University (LMU) offers education to over 51,000 students through its 18 faculties. You can opt for making applications to any of the degree programs offered in 200 subjects and in manifold combinations. Alongside the degree programs, LMU also offers teacher training programs in 100 major and 140 supplemental subjects

For the class of 2018/19, LMU, Munich received freshman enrollments of 9,424 students representing around 140 nations from across the world. International students are offered admissions to Ludwig Maximillian University twice a year (Summer and Winter Semester). The 2018/19 academic year enrolled 8875 international students (freshman+continuing) 61% of which women. Overall 15% of the international student population is from Asia and 6% from North and South America. 

  • You can choose from 8 UG and 16 PG departments at LMU offering courses taught mainly or partly in English Langauge.  
  • International students can apply for LMU via the International Office. 
  • For some programs (programs requiring aptitude test or pre-registration) international students are required to additionally apply with the respective institute as well as the international office. 
  • The most notable fields of study are psychology, physics, business, and management.

Impact of COVID-19: Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the application deadlines for Winter Semester have been postponed to August 20, 2020. Applicants are also asked to expect a longer processing time than usual resulting in delayed admission decisions. The deadlines and procedures at Studienkoleg (prep college in Germany) are not observing any changes.

Ludwig Maximilian University Admission Deadlines

The full-time academic session at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich begins in Winter and Summer seasons. International students may apply for up to one year in advance for early decision. However, the admission deadlines for both the intake seasons are:

  • Summer Semester: January 15
  • Winter Semester: July 15, 2020 (UG) and August 20, 2020 (PG)
  • Doctoral Degree Programs: October 30, 2020

Though the deadlines for making applications for winter intake have ended, applications are still being considered until August 20, 2020, in case any of the following applies to you:

  • If you are not applying for a preparatory course with Studienkolleg.
  • If you have successfully completed pre-registration or academic advising process for the program you wish to study at Ludwig Maximillian University.
  • If you have completed the aptitude test for the degree program you wish to study.
  • If you have applied for masters degree programs at LMU. 

Ludwig Maximillian University International Admissions

Documents Required

All international applicants must submit the following documents along with the application form:

  • School leaving certification along with university entrance examination certificate or university certificate or certificate from a one-year higher education course. 
  • Evidence of German Language proficiency
  • Updated CV
  • marriage certificate or official change of name certificate, if applicable.
  • German student visa
  • Letter of admission, if applying for a master’s degree.  

German Student Visa

Students who are non-EU/EEA must have a student visa to study in any university based in Germany. If a student wishes to choose a program that lasts for 6 months or more, he/she must apply for a study visa in their home country before traveling. The documents required for applying for the German student visa are:

  • Valid passport
  • Passport size photos
  • University entrance qualification recognized by Germany (A-Levels or equivalent)
  • Proof of previous academic performance
  • Proof of financial resources
  • Letter of admission from Ludwig Maximilian University.

The processing of German student visas takes around 20-25 days, therefore it is quite necessary that you apply for the visa 3 months before you move to Germany.     The admissions office of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich reviews each application critically.
