LMU Munich offers 15+ scholarships, of which 12+ are accessible to Indian applicants across UG, Master’s, and PhD levels. With 11,178 international students and QS World Rank 61 in 2027, LMU Munich blends near-zero tuition with layered scholarship stacks funded by the university, Bavaria, and Germany’s federal system.

  • Standard PG tuition (most programs): EUR 85 per semester (INR 9,360) as the sole basic fee
  • With scholarship + fee waiver: Deutschlandstipendium at EUR 300 per month (INR 33,036) covers most monthly rent in Munich
  • Full DAAD Master’s stack + LMU zero tuition: EUR 992 per month (INR 1.09 Lakhs) plus travel and health insurance
  • Next major deadline: Deutschlandstipendium applications for the 2027 cycle open March 16, 2027 (tentative, annual cycle)

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 EUR = INR 110.12 as of August 2026. Amounts above INR 1 Lakh are shown in Lakhs; smaller figures stay in raw INR for clarity.

LMU Munich Scholarships for UG Students

Bachelor’s students at LMU Munich pay only the EUR 85 semester contribution, so scholarships focus on living costs rather than tuition. Six awards are open to first-degree applicants including Indian citizens.

Scholarship Amount (EUR / INR) Eligibility Deadline
Deutschlandstipendium EUR 300/month (INR 33,036/month) for 12 months All nationalities enrolled at LMU, top academic record, community involvement March 16 to April 5, 2027 (tentative, annual cycle)
SIST LMU Study Scholarship Monthly stipend (Bavaria-funded, individually assessed) International UG students, academic excellence plus proven financial need January 15 to March 8, 2027 (tentative, annual)
SIST LMU Equality Scholarship Monthly living-cost stipend Indian UG students with disability, chronic illness, or refugee background Rolling; tentative March 1 to October 22, 2027
German Language Course Grant Up to EUR 150 (INR 16,518), post-course reimbursement International UG students with 80% attendance February 15 to November 30, 2027 (tentative)
LMU Nothilfe (Emergency Aid) EUR 650 one-time (INR 71,578) Any LMU UG student in sudden financial hardship Rolling; tentative closing November 30, 2027
Oskar Karl Forster Scholarship Learning-material reimbursement (books, printing) All LMU UG students, need-based Rolling application, 2027

Most bachelor’s programs at LMU are German-taught, so a C1 language certificate is a precondition for the UG-level awards above. Indian students entering with a 90% or higher Class 12 score and a TestAS distinction rank fill about a third of successful Deutschlandstipendium slots each year at LMU.

LMU Munich Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Master’s applicants get the widest funding coverage. Nine LMU or LMU-linked scholarships accept Indian PG candidates, and most stack on top of the DAAD Master’s grant.

Deutschlandstipendium (PG) EUR 300/month (INR 33,036/month) for 12 months, renewable Enrolled Master’s students, GPA on par with class top decile March 16 to April 5, 2027 (tentative)

LMU Nothilfe (Emergency Aid) EUR 650 one-time (INR 71,578) PG students in sudden hardship Rolling; tentative closing November 30, 2027
BayBIDS-Stipendium Monthly stipend, Bavaria-funded Graduates of German Schools Abroad now studying in Bavaria Tentative closing August 2027

Reddit Insight: Indian PG applicants on r/germany consistently report that DAAD Master’s committees favour a first-class Bachelor’s (65% or higher on the Indian scale) plus two documented years of relevant work; without both, the shortlist rate drops sharply.

India-Specific Scholarships at LMU Munich

Three India-origin awards cover most of what an Indian student needs at LMU. All are portable and pay directly to the student, not to the university.

Scholarship Amount (USD / INR) Eligibility Deadline
Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship Up to USD 100,000 (INR 87.5 Lakhs) total package Indian passport, Indian residency, born on or after January 1, 1996, confirmed LMU offer March 31, 2027 at 12:00 PM IST (tentative)
KC Mahindra Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad Up to INR 10 Lakhs, interest-free loan-scholarship Indian citizen, admitted to Master’s at a top international university, financial need Tentative closing March 31, 2027
JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship INR 1 Lakh to INR 10 Lakhs loan plus INR 75,000 to INR 2 Lakhs gift Indian citizen, holding a Bachelor’s with strong academic record, admitted for higher study abroad Applications open December 2026, close March 2027 (tentative)
DAAD India Office Support Advisory and pre-departure; no direct stipend Any Indian applicant to a German university Year-round advisory service

Inlaks and KC Mahindra both require a confirmed LMU admission letter before the application deadline, which locks Indian students into the winter intake at latest.

  • Application priority order: Inlaks first (March deadline), KC Mahindra next, JN Tata as backup track
  • Documents Indian applicants underprepare: APS certificate, notarised income affidavit, three-recommender letter set
  • Disbursement mode: Inlaks pays in tranches per semester, KC Mahindra as loan-scholarship, JN Tata as loan plus gift portion

LMU Munich PhD Scholarships

Doctoral candidates at LMU rarely pay their own way. PhD funding runs through either a paid research position, a DAAD stipend, or an LMU-linked doctoral scholarship.

Scholarship Amount (EUR / INR) Eligibility Deadline
DAAD Research Grants (PhD) EUR 1,400/month (INR 1.54 Lakhs/month) plus travel, insurance, research allowance Indian Master’s graduates with a confirmed LMU supervisor and clear research proposal Rolling; most streams close between October 2026 and January 2027 for October 2027 intake
SIST LMU Study Scholarship (Doctoral) Monthly stipend, Bavaria-funded International doctoral candidates registered at LMU with academic excellence plus financial need January 15 to March 8, 2027 (tentative)
SIST LMU Equality Scholarship (Doctoral) Monthly stipend, individually assessed Doctoral candidates with disability, chronic illness, or refugee background Tentative March 1 to October 22, 2027
Elite Network of Bavaria Doctoral Programs EUR 1,468/month (INR 1.62 Lakhs/month) for International Doctorate Programs PhD candidates in eligible IDP subjects at LMU Programme-specific; most close June 2027
LMU Chemiefonds and Faculty-Level Doctoral Grants Roughly EUR 1,400/month (INR 1.54 Lakhs/month) PhD candidates in chemistry, pharmacy, and select STEM faculties Rolling, tied to project start dates in 2027

Deutschlandstipendium at LMU is not open to PhD candidates. Doctoral funding therefore leans on DAAD Research Grants and the Elite Network of Bavaria, both of which reward a well-drafted research proposal above raw GPA.

External Government Scholarships

Beyond LMU-run awards, several federal and international bodies fund Indian students at LMU Munich. Four programs stand out for their scale and predictable annual cycles.

Scholarship Amount (EUR / INR) Eligibility Deadline
DAAD Master’s Scholarship for Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS) EUR 992/month (INR 1.09 Lakhs/month), 12 to 24 months, plus travel and insurance Indian citizen with Bachelor’s, 2+ years of relevant work, admitted to an eligible LMU Master’s Course-specific; most streams close by August 15, 2027
DAAD WISE (Working Internships in Science and Engineering) EUR 934/month (INR 1.03 Lakhs/month) plus travel Indian UG students at IITs, NITs, IISc, IISERs in STEM fields October 15 to December 15, 2026 (tentative, annual)
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Up to EUR 1,400/month (INR 1.54 Lakhs/month) plus tuition and travel Any nationality, admitted to a two-year joint Master’s involving LMU February 28, 2027 (tentative, programme-specific)
Bavarian State Study Scholarship Roughly EUR 992/month (INR 1.09 Lakhs/month) International Master’s and doctoral candidates at Bavarian public universities, need plus merit December 1, 2026 (tentative, annual)

Reddit Insight: Indian threads on r/IndiansInGermany repeatedly flag that DAAD EPOS applicants who submit only two recommendation letters (instead of the full three) are routinely filtered out at the desk-check stage, well before the academic review.

Indian citizens are not eligible for German BAföG federal student aid, so plan around DAAD, Bavarian scholarships, or a KC Mahindra or JN Tata loan-scholarship. Combine one federal grant with a targeted LMU top-up such as SIST Study Scholarship to cover both tuition contribution and Munich living costs.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can stack at LMU Munich?

Ans. The largest realistic stack for an Indian Master’s student is DAAD EPOS at EUR 992 per month (INR 1.09 Lakhs) plus a Deutschlandstipendium top-up at EUR 300 per month (INR 33,036) plus a KC Mahindra loan-scholarship of INR 10 Lakhs. Combined, this covers all Munich living costs plus books, travel, and insurance across a two-year Master’s. LMU itself charges only the EUR 85 semester fee (INR 9,360), so tuition is not a live cost to fund.

Ques. When should Indian students apply for LMU Munich scholarships?

Ans. Start 12 to 15 months before your intended intake. DAAD Master’s deadlines cluster between August and October each year for the following October intake. Inlaks and KC Mahindra close on March 31, 2027, tentative for 2027-28 admissions. The Deutschlandstipendium runs a March-to-April window each year but only opens once you are already enrolled at LMU. Applying in a compressed three-month window rarely works because DAAD interviews alone add six to eight weeks.

Ques. Do Indian students apply for LMU scholarships before or after admission?

Ans. Some before, some after. External awards such as DAAD, Inlaks, KC Mahindra, and JN Tata require a confirmed LMU admission letter or offer at submission. LMU-run awards such as Deutschlandstipendium, SIST LMU Study Scholarship, and LMU Nothilfe are only open once you are enrolled and hold an LMU user ID. Plan a two-stage funding calendar: external grants in the six months before intake, LMU-run grants in your first semester on campus.

Ques. What GPA do Indian students need for LMU scholarships and Deutschlandstipendium?

Ans. The unwritten Deutschlandstipendium bar at LMU is a German grade of 1.5 or better, which converts to roughly 85% on an Indian percentage scale or a CGPA of 8.5 out of 10. DAAD EPOS requires a first-class Bachelor’s, meaning 65% or higher on the Indian scale, plus subject-relevant work experience. SIST LMU Study Scholarship weighs financial need alongside grades, so a 70% Bachelor’s with documented need can still succeed.

Ques. How does the Deutschlandstipendium work at LMU Munich?

Ans. Deutschlandstipendium pays EUR 300 per month (INR 33,036) for 12 months, split equally between the federal government and LMU’s private sponsors. The 2026 cycle ran from March 16 to April 5, 2026, with decisions sent by campus email in mid-May 2026. The 2027 cycle will follow the same March-to-April window. It is open to Indian students, does not depend on family income, and does not affect any external scholarship you already hold, unless that award is itself a talent-based German scholarship.

Ques. Does the Deutschlandstipendium cover rent in Munich?

Ans. Partially. Deutschlandstipendium at EUR 300 per month (INR 33,036) covers about 60% to 70% of a shared-flat room in Munich, which typically runs EUR 450 to EUR 550 per month (INR 49,554 to INR 60,566). Most Indian students stack it with a DAAD grant, a part-time Werkstudent job of up to EUR 603 per month (INR 66,402) that keeps the stipend intact, or a KC Mahindra loan-scholarship for the deposit and first-semester rent buffer.

Scholarship

Yes. I received a 1 time grant of €1200 based on my performance.

Quite good. It was nice in the sense that the education system was quite extensive and the staff was very cooperative. There was also the option of finishing your studies within 5 semesters and with Corona, they extended it to 6 semesters. The halls where the classes were conducted were also well equipped.

It has been great. I got to learn a lot and the highlight was different research experiences I had in different institutes and fields.

Overall it is a nice experience. Obviously getting acquainted with the new life style and teaching is challenging and will initially be difficult, but it gets better with time. Attending lectures in the University instead of sitting at home and watching them online definitely helps.
