Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Application Deadlines

LMU Munich runs two intakes a year, and Indian applicants apply through uni-assist, Germany’s central pre-check body that verifies foreign qualifications before forwarding files to the university. Dates below come per the LMU application guidelines page.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use EUR 1 = INR 111.79, the live rate on 21 August 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

LMU Munich’s primary intake for Indian students is Winter Semester 2027/28 (October 2027 start), and most degree programmes open only in that cycle. Summer Semester 2027 offers a smaller subset of English-taught Master’s.

Uni-assist charges EUR 75 (INR 8,384) for your first course choice and EUR 30 (INR 3,354) for each additional programme in the same semester. Files must reach uni-assist by the deadline, and the pre-check itself takes 4 to 6 weeks, so submit well before the cut-off.

Planning note: Indian applicants must also hold an APS certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi before applying, and APS processing itself can take 8 to 12 weeks.

LMU Munich Eligibility for Indian Students

LMU sets academic and language floors at institution level, and every faculty is free to raise them. Indian applicants should read this section alongside the specific programme page before applying.

  • UG general entry: Class XII (CBSE, ICSE, or a State Board) with an aggregate of around 65 percent in five academic subjects.
  • UG language: CEFR C1 German (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 in all four sections) for almost every Bachelor’s programme, including English-language ones.
  • PG general entry: A recognised Bachelor’s degree of at least three years, with at least 60 to 70 percent in the relevant field.
  • PG language (English-taught): IELTS 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 88, or CEFR B2 to C1, depending on the programme.
  • PG language (German-taught): DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 across all sections.
  • APS certificate: Mandatory for every Indian applicant to any programme.

LMU Munich English Waiver for Indian Students

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München does not publish a blanket medium-of-instruction (MOI) waiver. Indian applicants who studied a Bachelor’s in English still need to submit an IELTS, TOEFL, or CEFR certificate for English-taught Master’s, and a very small number of programmes accept a signed MOI letter from an Indian university on a case-by-case basis. Plan to sit for IELTS or TOEFL well before the deadline, since waivers are not the default.

LMU Munich German Requirement for Bachelor’s Applicants

Every Bachelor’s programme at LMU, including English Literature and Linguistics, requires proof of C1 German at admission. Indian applicants typically take an approved test at the Goethe-Institut or telc, or complete a Studienkolleg foundation year in Germany.

LMU PG Programs and English Score Minimums

LMU offers 40+ Master’s programmes in English, spanning the sciences, humanities, economics, and public health. Standard degrees carry zero base tuition, with only a semester fee of EUR 85 (INR 9,502) each term for student services and the local transport pass. A few fee-based executive Master’s cost between EUR 600 (INR 67,074) and EUR 13,320 (INR 14.89 Lakhs) per year, and are covered on the programs and course-wise details page.

LMU Munich Master’s Application Route

Most PG programmes route through uni-assist for the pre-check, then LMU’s own faculty admissions committee makes the final decision. A handful of research-intensive Master’s, such as Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, apply directly to the department instead of uni-assist.

Insider note: For competitive quantitative Master’s, LMU’s faculty admissions team weighs GRE scores, research statements, and coursework alignment more than raw GPA, so an applied Bachelor’s project can outweigh a modest first-degree average.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official LMU page for your chosen program before applying.

LMU Munich UG Programs and Requirements

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München’s Bachelor’s programmes are taught almost entirely in German, which is the single biggest gate for Indian school-leavers. Applicants without C1 German usually spend a year at a Studienkolleg, a state-recognised foundation college that bridges Class XII students into German university coursework.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.
BSc Business Administration6 semestersClass XII with 65 percent, Mathematics through Class XIINot required (German-taught)
BSc Economics6 semestersClass XII with Mathematics, aggregate around 65 percentNot required (German-taught)
BSc Computer Science6 semestersClass XII with Mathematics, plus proof of programming backgroundNot required (German-taught)
BSc Mathematics6 semestersClass XII with strong Mathematics scoreNot required (German-taught)
BA Political Science6 semestersClass XII with humanities or social science focusNot required (German-taught)

Because all rows are German-taught, the English column reads "not required" throughout, but a C1 German certificate is compulsory at admission. Indian applicants who fall short can enter a Studienkolleg for a year, take the FSP (assessment test), and then re-apply to LMU.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München PhD Admissions

LMU offers a doctorate across every faculty, with the strongest Indian-student flow into physics, chemistry, life sciences, and philosophy. Admission is supervisor-first: you identify a professor whose research overlaps yours, secure their agreement, then formalise enrolment through the faculty’s doctoral office.

LMU Munich PhD Application Steps

  • Shortlist supervisors from the department page and email a research statement plus CV.
  • Draft a research proposal aligned with the supervisor’s active grants.
  • Submit the formal application, APS certificate, and Master’s transcript to the faculty doctoral office.
  • Complete enrolment and obtain the doctoral candidate ID card once accepted.

Funding for LMU PhD Applicants

Most Indian doctoral students at LMU are funded through a TV-L E13 research position, a state-set pay scale for academic staff that pays around EUR 4,000 to EUR 4,800 (INR 4.47 Lakhs to INR 5.37 Lakhs) gross per month at 65 to 100 percent load. External options include DAAD’s research grants and the LMU Research Fellowships, and applicants should check the Graduate Center portal for programme-specific stipends before applying.

Insider note: Contact potential supervisors 9 to 12 months ahead of your intended start, since most LMU PhD positions are tied to funded projects that fill on a rolling basis.

LMU Munich Application Process Guide

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München uses uni-assist as its central platform for Indian applicants, and the sequence below is the same for Bachelor’s and taught Master’s applicants.

  1. Create a My assist account on the uni-assist portal before 1 May 2027 for the primary Winter 2027/28 cycle, or before 1 November 2026 for Summer 2027.
  2. Book and clear the APS interview at the German Embassy in New Delhi if you have not already, and download the APS certificate.
  3. Fill in your target programme, upload scanned copies of academic and language documents, and post the physical certified copies to uni-assist Berlin.
  4. Pay the application fee of EUR 75 (INR 8,384) to uni-assist for the first course choice and EUR 30 (INR 3,354) for each additional programme.
  5. Wait for the uni-assist pre-check result (VPD or preliminary review), typically 4 to 6 weeks, and forward it to LMU where required.
  6. Track your LMU faculty admission decision through the LMU Move-In portal after uni-assist forwards your file.
  7. Accept the offer, enrol online, pay the semester fee of EUR 85 (INR 9,502), and receive your matriculation letter for the visa file.

LMU Admission Decisions Timeline

LMU’s admissions committees release Winter Semester decisions by the end of August and Summer Semester decisions by the end of February. Indian applicants should track their My assist account for the pre-check status and their LMU Move-In inbox for the final offer.

  • Offer letter: Delivered as a Zulassungsbescheid (admission notice) via the LMU Move-In portal.
  • Acceptance window: Enrolment must be completed between 2 September and 1 October for Winter, and early March for Summer.
  • Conditional offers: Common for pending Bachelor’s transcripts, with a hard deadline to submit final marksheets at enrolment.
  • Deferral: LMU generally does not defer offers, so Indian students who miss the visa window must re-apply for the next intake.

Reality check: If your Zulassungsbescheid arrives late in August, book the earliest German Embassy visa slot the same day, since VFS slots in New Delhi and Bengaluru fill within hours during peak season.

Documents Required for LMU Munich Applicants

Uni-assist demands physical certified copies for the pre-check, plus scanned uploads on the portal. Missing a single document restarts the review clock, so batch everything before submitting.

  • APS certificate from the German Embassy in New Delhi.
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets and passing certificates, certified by a notary or the issuing board.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated transcript, semester-wise, for PG applicants.
  • Tabular CV in the LMU sample format, in English or German.
  • Statement of purpose and, where required, a research proposal or writing sample.
  • Two letters of recommendation on institutional letterhead for research-heavy Master’s.
  • IELTS, TOEFL, or CEFR certificate for English-taught programmes, or TestDaF or DSH for German-taught programmes.
  • Passport bio-page copy valid at least until December 2028.
  • Passport-size photograph in biometric format.
  • Fee-payment proof for the EUR 75 uni-assist charge.

LMU Munich Acceptance Rate Explained

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München’s institution-wide acceptance rate sits at around 10 percent, which places it among the more selective German public universities. LMU does not publish a formal institutional figure, and this estimate is based on published intake and application patterns for its restricted-admission programmes.

Why the LMU Munich Acceptance Rate Reads Low

Restricted-admission (NC) programmes such as medicine, psychology, and business administration draw applicant pools that are 8 to 15 times the seat count each cycle, and international demand for English-taught Master’s in data science and physics has climbed sharply. The city of Munich itself is a magnet, and LMU currently holds the ranking band of 34 in the THE World University Rankings 2026.

What Boosts an Indian Applicant’s Odds at LMU

Programme-fit almost always beats raw scores. Applicants who pair a first-class Bachelor’s with a research paper, an internship or published preprint in the target field, and a well-argued statement of purpose consistently outperform higher-GPA applicants without that alignment.

Germany Student Visa Process for Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Applicants

Indian students headed to LMU apply for the National Visa for the purpose of studies (Type D, long-stay) at the German Embassy in New Delhi or a VFS Global Consulate in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, or Mumbai. Book the appointment as soon as your Zulassungsbescheid arrives, since slots stretch 8 to 12 weeks in the July to September peak.

The core documents are the LMU admission letter, APS certificate, a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with at least EUR 11,904 (INR 13.30 Lakhs) for one year of living costs, German public or approved private health insurance, and proof of accommodation in Munich. Fee is EUR 75 (INR 8,384) for the visa itself, and processing takes 6 to 12 weeks. On arrival, register your address at the local Bürgeramt within 14 days and apply for the residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde before your visa expires.

2026 update: The Sperrkonto minimum was raised from EUR 11,208 to EUR 11,904 for the 2026 intake, so open the account with the higher amount to avoid a documentation reissue.

Tips and Checklist for LMU Munich

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München across the last few Winter Semester cycles.

  • Book APS 4 months early: APS interview slots at the German Embassy fill fast, and the certificate takes 8 to 12 weeks after the interview.
  • Target Winter 2027/28: Almost every Master’s is a Winter-only intake, so plan test scores, APS, and referees for a May 2027 submission.
  • Sit for IELTS before December 2026: LMU expects IELTS 6.5 or CEFR B2 for most English-taught Master’s, and a retake buffer keeps you inside the January deadline.
  • Split the uni-assist fee: Applying to two LMU programmes costs EUR 105 (INR 11,738) total, so shortlist a safety programme in the same cycle.
  • Send transcripts 8 weeks before deadline: Request Bachelor’s transcripts from your Indian university early, since certification and courier take 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Open the Sperrkonto in December 2026: Blocked-account setup with Deutsche Bank, Fintiba, or Expatrio can take 2 to 4 weeks and precedes the visa slot.
  • Cover-letter alignment: Cite specific LMU faculty and their published work in your SOP, since faculty admissions committees weigh research fit heavily.
  • Keep two passport copies handy: The APS, uni-assist, and visa file each need a fresh certified passport copy at the same time.

LMU Munich rewards early, evidence-heavy applications. Line up the APS certificate, IELTS score, and Bachelor’s transcripts by December 2026 for Summer 2027, or by April 2027 for the Winter 2027/28 primary intake, and treat uni-assist’s 4 to 6 week pre-check as a hard constraint that sets the true internal deadline.

Overview

Quite good. It was nice in the sense that the education system was quite extensive and the staff was very cooperative. There was also the option of finishing your studies within 5 semesters and with Corona, they extended it to 6 semesters. The halls where the classes were conducted were also well equipped.

Scholarship

Yes. I received a 1 time grant of €1200 based on my performance.

Overall it is a nice experience. Obviously getting acquainted with the new life style and teaching is challenging and will initially be difficult, but it gets better with time. Attending lectures in the University instead of sitting at home and watching them online definitely helps.
