Originally founded as a bilingual university combining the educational traditions of both France and Germany, Saarland University came into existence in November, 1948. This is a modern campus-based university located in the tri-border area of Germany, France, and Luxemburg.
Saarland University ranks within the top 500 universities globally and #61 for the most pioneering universities in Europe. At present, the university has almost 18,500 students, amongst which about 16% are international students coming from about 140 nations worldwide.
The university provides top quality research in the key disciplines of Informatics, Bioscience, and Nanotechnology. The Department of Informatics is widely recognized for its contribution to research and academic excellence.

There are 22 international degree programs that offer graduates a qualification of double-degree. The university also offers numerous certificate courses and continuing education courses, available for both graduates and professionals. The graduate schools have a number of structured doctoral programs. The Department of Computer Science and Mathematics are two top rating faculties in university league tables.
Saarland University Student Services provides rental rooms and apartments in the student halls of the university. The university also arrange rooms for the students in the private rental market. For PhD students and visiting international candidates, there is an option to avail rooms in the university guest houses. The semester travel ticket allows students to get free bus and rail services throughout Saarland.
