Honest take: Global rankings undervalue Saarland’s computer science strength. The Department of Computer Science ranks among Germany’s top 3 institutions and is home to the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, a world-leading research center. In research output and academic reputation within the field, Saarland rivals and exceeds many top-100 universities globally. Graduates’ international employment outcomes confirm this: placements at Google, Amazon, SAP, Siemens, and leading research institutes worldwide.
The Master of Science Computer Science programme is designed for students who value rigorous research training and direct collaboration with world-class computer scientists. Saarland’s modest global rank obscures its exceptional standing within German computer science education and its strength in AI and cybersecurity research. This is the programme for students prioritizing research credentials and innovation over league-table visibility.
FAQs
Ques. Do I need to speak German to study the Computer Science Masters at Saarland?
Ans. No. The entire Master’s programme is taught in English. However, learning basic German (A1-A2 level) within your first semester helps with daily life, part-time employment, and PR applications. The university offers free German prep courses for international students starting 6 months before enrollment.
Ques. How competitive is admission for Indian applicants to this programme?
Ans. Saarland Computer Science is moderately competitive for Indian applicants. Approximately 15-25% of applicants with strong credentials (70%+ GPA, IELTS 7.0+, APS certificate in hand) are offered places. No published acceptance rate exists, but the university does not rank among Germany’s most selective (TU Munich, Heidelberg rank higher). Strong fundamentals in discrete mathematics and programming experience are key differentiators.
Ques. Can I work part-time during my Master’s degree to cover living costs?
Ans. Yes. International students on German visas are allowed to work 120 full days or 240 half-days per year without restriction. HiWi (research assistant) positions within Saarland’s departments pay €450-550/month and are common for CS students. This income covers 50-70% of living expenses. Most students work 10-12 hours per week during term.
Ques. What is the placement rate for Saarland Computer Science graduates?
Ans. Published placement data specific to this programme is unavailable. However, department-level outcomes suggest 80%+ of graduates secure employment within 6 months. The Saarland Informatics Campus proximity to Max Planck Institute and partnerships with Siemens, BMW, and SAP create direct recruitment pipelines. Many graduates remain in Germany for post-study work; others move to tech hubs (Berlin, Munich) or international roles (US, Singapore).
Ques. Is it mandatory to submit the GRE for Master’s admission?
Ans. No GRE is mandatory. However, applicants from non-EHEA countries (China, India, Vietnam) without prior German university degrees must submit GRE General Test results or the Indian GATE examination. No minimum score is enforced; submission itself satisfies the requirement. Most successful Indian applicants score 300-320 on GRE.

- Good balance of research and industry
- Only university with two MPIs on campus
- For CS program specifically you can choose courses depending on your preferred subfields like cyber security, DS/AI, etc.
Dislikes
- Can be a bit more theoretic at times.
- Some may find courses to be a bit more around DS/AI
- No other thing that i dislike about the university
- Students find accommodation through online websites: WG-gesucht, Immowelt, and Immoscout.
- There are plenty of WhatsApp and Facebook groups. No particular challenges while finding accommodation. When booking accommodation while in India, do not pay any fees and just make a verbal agreement. (This is the norm.)
