Ruhr-Universität Bochum Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants to Ruhr-Universität Bochum admission must satisfy academic, language and credential-verification thresholds published by the International Office.
- PG academic: Bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended); MS Applied Computer Science asks for CGPA 6.5/10
- English language (English-taught masters): IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 90 or equivalent as per RUB’s language policy; verify at the official RUB language requirements page
- German language (German-taught programmes): DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4 or Goethe C1
- APS certificate: Mandatory for every Indian applicant, obtained from the German Embassy in New Delhi
- UG academic: Class 12 with 75-85% (recommended) for CBSE/ISC; most state boards require completion of Studienkolleg
Key insight: RUB does not require GRE for any English-taught masters, which sets it apart from most German technical universities and shortens the prep timeline for Indian applicants.
Ruhr-Universität Bochum Acceptance Rate 2027
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum acceptance rate is estimated at 40% (estimated) across all programmes. RUB does not publish a central admissions rate, and the figure derives from applicant-to-admitted ratios reported by the International Office in prior years.
Selectivity varies widely by programme: MS Applied Computer Science and MS IT Security are more competitive than the average, while several humanities and natural-science masters are open-admission for qualified applicants.
Reality check: A 40% headline rate does not mean any qualified applicant gets in; RUB’s English-taught engineering masters run at closer to 25-30% acceptance for Indian applicants once GPA and language cut-offs are applied.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
German public universities including RUB do not run centralised placement drives; graduates enter the labour market through the university’s Career Service and independent job search during the 18-month post-study work visa.
- Placement model: Career Service provides CV workshops, job fairs and employer networking; no MBA-style on-campus placement drive
- Median starting salary (market median): EUR 48,000 to EUR 55,000 per year (INR 44.64 to 51.15 lakh) for RUB MS engineering and CS graduates, based on published Federal Employment Agency data for German master’s holders
- Sectors and representative employers: Cybersecurity (Horst Görtz Institute alumni frequently join firms in the Rhine-Ruhr region), automotive engineering, chemical industry, and IT services
- Careers support: RUB Career Service, uni-wide job portal, and NRW-wide alumni network give Indian graduates access to Ruhr-area employers
- Post-study work visa: 18-month job-search visa, followed by EU Blue Card eligibility once a qualifying offer is secured
Insider note: Indian MS graduates from RUB’s IT Security and Computational Engineering tracks typically secure roles within 6-9 months of graduation, provided German language reaches at least B1 level for workplace communication.
Ruhr-Universität Bochum vs Peer Universities
The peer set below covers three German public universities of similar research intensity plus one higher-tier German technical university, compared on rank and PG cost.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (EUR) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruhr-Universität Bochum | #402 | #269 | EUR 700 (contribution) | INR 65,100 | IT Security via Horst Görtz Institute |
| TU Dortmund | NA | NA | EUR 620 (contribution) | INR 57,660 | Ruhr-area engineering, UA Ruhr partner |
| University of Duisburg-Essen | #521-530 | NA | EUR 700 (contribution) | INR 65,100 | UA Ruhr partner, wide English MS catalogue |
| RWTH Aachen | #99 | NA | EUR 620 (contribution) | INR 57,660 | Higher-tier German engineering; more selective |
RUB stands out from peers in the Ruhr region on subject depth in Philosophy, IT Security and Psychology, and offers a broader English-taught masters catalogue than TU Dortmund at the same cost band.
Ruhr-Universität Bochum suits Indian applicants who want a low-cost pathway into a German engineering, computer science or IT security masters, backed by a total two-year outlay of roughly INR 20 lakh against a market-median starting salary of INR 44 to 51 lakh. The single strongest advantage for Indian graduates is the 18-month post-study job-search visa and the EU Blue Card pipeline that follows.
It is not the right fit for applicants set on brand-tier Global Top 100 recognition or those who need on-campus placement guarantees; RWTH Aachen or TU Munich would serve that goal better despite tougher admissions and higher living costs.
Ruhr-Universität Bochum FAQs
Ques. Does Ruhr-Universität Bochum accept a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree?
Ans. Yes. RUB accepts three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for most master’s programmes, provided the degree is recognised by the Association of Indian Universities and cleared by the APS certificate. Some restricted-admission masters may require a four-year degree or additional coursework; applicants should confirm the specific programme’s requirement on the RUB course page before applying via uni-assist.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at RUB?
Ans. Yes. International students in Germany can work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year on a student visa. Bochum’s Ruhr-region economy offers hourly student jobs from EUR 12-15 in retail, hospitality and campus assistant roles, and RUB’s Career Service posts on-campus HiWi research assistant positions that pay EUR 13-14 per hour to enrolled students.
Ques. Is the GRE required for MS admissions at Ruhr-Universität Bochum?
Ans. No. RUB does not require the GRE for any of its English-taught masters, including MS Applied Computer Science and MS Computational Engineering. Admission is based on undergraduate transcripts, English language proof, statement of purpose and APS certificate. Some interdisciplinary tracks may request additional coursework proof, but standardised test scores are not part of the mandatory checklist.
Ques. How long does the APS certificate take for Indian applicants to RUB?
Ans. The APS process at the German Embassy in New Delhi typically takes 4-6 weeks from document submission to certificate issuance, including the mandatory in-person interview. Indian applicants targeting the 15 January or 15 July RUB deadlines should submit APS documents no later than early November or early May respectively. APS is a hard prerequisite for uni-assist forwarding any application to Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
Ques. What are the German banks that accept Indian education loans for RUB?
Ans. Indian students at RUB typically use SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank and Avanse for education loans covering the Blocked Account requirement of EUR 11,904 for 2026-27. Loans up to INR 40 lakh usually do not require collateral for RUB admits. Applicants should present the RUB admission letter plus Blocked Account confirmation to the bank; disbursement is usually staggered to match VFS visa appointment timing.
Ques. How do Indian applicants apply for accommodation at Ruhr-Universität Bochum?
Ans. Indian students apply for RUB student housing directly through Akademisches Förderungswerk Bochum, the regional student services body, using its online portal. Applications should be submitted 3-4 months before arrival because waiting lists run long. Rooms start at EUR 250 in older residences and go up to EUR 500 for newer studios; the university does not guarantee accommodation, so most Indian students book a private shared flat for the first month as backup.
Ques. Is IELTS the only accepted English test at Ruhr-Universität Bochum?
Ans. No. RUB accepts IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90 and Cambridge English CAE or CPE for its English-taught masters, and waives English proof for applicants whose bachelor’s degree was fully taught in English (verified via a medium-of-instruction letter). Some programmes also accept a Duolingo English Test score, but applicants must confirm this on the specific programme page rather than assuming uniform acceptance across the university.
Ques. What are the German language requirements for RUB bachelor’s programmes?
Ans. Most RUB bachelor’s programmes are taught in German and require DSH-2 or TestDaF 4x4 or Goethe C1 certification at the point of admission. Indian Class 12 graduates from most state boards must also complete a one-year Studienkolleg foundation course before direct entry; CBSE and ISC students with strong marks (75-85%) may qualify for direct admission depending on the specific bachelor’s programme and its APS assessment.
