University of Kassel Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must meet academic, language and credential-verification thresholds before uni-assist processes the file.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year Bachelor’s from a recognised Indian university with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 minimum (recommended); some programmes ask for 60% or a subject-specific background.
- English: IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79 to 90 (0-120 legacy scale); the exact minimum is programme-specific and listed on each course page.
- APS Certificate: Mandatory Akademische Prüfstelle verification issued by the German Embassy in New Delhi.
- Programme-specific: REMENA requires one year of relevant work experience; German-taught Masters ask for DSH-2 or TestDaF 4.
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 with 65% or higher (recommended); most Bachelor’s need one year of Indian undergraduate study or a Studienkolleg year.
- Language: German C1 (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4) for German-taught programmes; IELTS 6.0 for English-taught BSc Sustainable International Agriculture.
- APS Certificate: Same requirement as PG applicants.
Key insight: Kassel does not require GRE or GMAT for any Master’s programme, which sets it apart from US-facing engineering targets. A strong Bachelor’s transcript, IELTS 6.5 and a clean APS file are usually enough to secure the offer.
University of Kassel Acceptance Rate 2027
University of Kassel does not publish a consolidated acceptance rate. Based on programme-level admission data, the estimated overall Master’s acceptance rate is 35% (estimated), with the widest access in Sustainable Agriculture and Global Political Economy, and tighter selection in REMENA and Functional Safety Engineering.
Selectivity is programme-driven, not university-wide. Master’s cohorts are capped at 25 to 40 seats in engineering, which raises the effective bar for Indian applicants.
Reality check: A 55% Bachelor’s is the floor, not the target. Indian applicants admitted to Kassel Masters in engineering typically hold 65% to 75% or a CGPA of 7.0+ with subject-relevant projects, plus IELTS 6.5 across bands.

University of Kassel Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
University of Kassel does not run a centralised placement cell in the Indian sense. Career outcomes depend on individual programmes, employer connections in Hesse and the 18-month post-study job search visa.
- Employment outcome: Roughly 85% of international Master’s graduates in engineering find work within 12 months of completion, per DAAD graduate surveys (market median).
- Median starting salary (MS graduates): € 51,000/year (₹ 48.96 lakh) across engineering and computer science, based on Stepstone Germany 2026 data.
- Representative employers: Volkswagen, Bosch, SMA Solar Technology (headquartered in Kassel), Rheinmetall, K+S AG, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics.
- Career support: The Career Service runs CV clinics, employer mixers, and a job portal; German-speaking students access a wider pool of local roles.
- Post-study work visa: Graduates receive an 18-month job-seeker residence permit; converting to an EU Blue Card requires a salary above € 45,300/year (₹ 43.49 lakh) in 2026.
Insider note: SMA Solar Technology and the Fraunhofer IEE actively recruit REMENA graduates, giving Indian applicants a rare renewable-energy hiring pipeline that Berlin or Munich programmes do not match.
University of Kassel vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares Kassel with three German research universities and one Indian-preferred alternative, on shared metrics.
| University | QS World Rank 2027 | CD Study Abroad 2026 | Avg PG Semester Contribution | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Kassel | 1201-1400 | #332 | € 391 (₹ 0.38 lakh) | Renewable energy hub with SMA Solar and Fraunhofer IEE |
| University of Stuttgart | #312 | #181 | € 1,750 (₹ 1.68 lakh, non-EU) | Automotive and aerospace engineering |
| TU Darmstadt | #310 | #159 | € 289 (₹ 0.28 lakh) | TU9 member with strong CS and cybersecurity |
| University of Freiburg | #204 | #127 | € 1,655 (₹ 1.59 lakh, non-EU) | Research-intensive with international life sciences focus |
| RWTH Aachen | #99 | #106 | € 322 (₹ 0.31 lakh) | Top German engineering brand, largest technical university |
Kassel stands out for the zero-tuition Hesse policy paired with a hyper-specialised renewable energy ecosystem. Applicants with a renewable focus and moderate profiles will find better fit here than at TU9 members that recruit tighter cohorts.
University of Kassel fits the Indian applicant who wants a debt-light German Master’s in engineering, computer science or renewable energy, with a total two-year investment of around ₹ 20 lakh against a median starting salary of ₹ 48.96 lakh. Its APS-plus-uni-assist route and strong Hesse-based renewable employer network make it a rational, low-risk pick with a clear post-study work visa pathway.
It is not the right pick if you want a TU9 brand for consulting roles, an English-medium Bachelor’s outside agriculture, or metropolitan life in Berlin or Munich. Applicants targeting those goals should benchmark against TU Darmstadt or RWTH Aachen instead.
University of Kassel FAQs
Ques. Does University of Kassel require GRE or GMAT for Indian applicants?
Ans. No, University of Kassel does not require GRE or GMAT for any Master’s programme, including MSc Computer Science, MS Electrical Communication Engineering and the MBA-style Global Political Economy MA. Selection is based on the Bachelor’s transcript, subject fit, English proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL) and the APS certificate. This makes the application cheaper and faster than US-facing engineering targets for Indian students.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at University of Kassel?
Ans. Yes. Indian students on a German student visa can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year without a permit. On-campus roles as HiWi (student research assistants) pay € 12 to € 14 per hour (₹ 1,152 to ₹ 1,344). Off-campus jobs at IT firms, logistics warehouses and Kassel restaurants pay € 12 to € 15 per hour but usually require A2-level German for customer-facing roles.
Ques. How much blocked account amount is needed for a University of Kassel student visa?
Ans. Indian students applying for the German student visa need € 11,904 (₹ 11.43 lakh) in a Sperrkonto blocked account for the first year, per the January 2026 revision by the German Federal Foreign Office. Kassel does not require this proof for admission, but the German Consulate in Mumbai or New Delhi will not issue the visa without it. The amount unlocks at € 992 per month after arrival.
Ques. Is IELTS mandatory for University of Kassel Master’s admission?
Ans. IELTS is not the only path. University of Kassel accepts IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 to 90, Cambridge C1 Advanced, or a waiver if the Indian applicant completed a Bachelor’s fully in English medium and can produce a medium-of-instruction letter from the home university. The waiver policy varies by programme, so check the specific course page before skipping the test.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for University of Kassel?
Ans. SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and Avanse recognise University of Kassel as a listed foreign institution and offer education loans up to ₹ 40 lakh. Because tuition is zero, most Indian applicants borrow only for living costs and the blocked account. Collateral-free loans up to ₹ 7.5 lakh are common; higher amounts typically need property or a fixed-deposit lien.
Ques. What is the APS certificate and when should Indian applicants apply?
Ans. The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate is a mandatory academic-document verification issued by the German Embassy in New Delhi for all Indian applicants to German universities since November 2022. Book the appointment at least 12 weeks before the uni-assist deadline. Fees are approximately € 25 (₹ 2,400) and processing takes 4 to 8 weeks. Without APS, uni-assist will not forward the application to Kassel.
Ques. Can Kassel Master’s graduates get a permanent residence in Germany?
Ans. Yes. University of Kassel Master’s graduates receive an 18-month job-seeker residence permit. On securing a role paying above € 45,300/year (₹ 43.49 lakh), they qualify for the EU Blue Card, which allows permanent residence after 21 months with B1 German or 27 months with A1 German. This is the fastest legal PR path from any German engineering Master’s.
Ques. Are there English-taught Bachelor’s programmes at University of Kassel?
Ans. University of Kassel offers one English-taught Bachelor’s, BSc Sustainable International Agriculture, which admits Indian applicants directly from Class 12 with 70% and IELTS 6.0. All other Bachelor’s programmes, including Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Business Studies, are taught in German and require DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 certification. Indian applicants without German are better positioned to apply for Master’s after finishing an Indian Bachelor’s.

Overview
For masters, I chose Universiteit Gent, Belgium because I had a strong motivation to work for the development of rural areas in India. This University offers one of the best rural development programs in the world. After completing my master's degree, I worked through different national and international development research organizations in India. That helped me to acquire some advanced skills in research and motivated me to pursue Ph.D. if I want to make my career in research. One day, I found a vacancy offered by Universität Kassel, Germany for a doctoral researcher on the effect of urbanization on the peri-urban area of Bengaluru city. This position attracted my attention to apply and by god's grace, they selected me for this position.
Fees
During my master's, it was 8000 euros per year. For Ph.D. its 300 euros per semester.
