St. George's University School of Medicine opened its August 2026 intake to Indian applicants on June 25, 2026. The call targets NEET-UG 2026 students facing a disrupted admission cycle. SGU, based in Grenada, timed the intake to the Indian academic calendar. The August start lets students join without taking a gap year.

  • The intake targets NEET-UG 2026 aspirants hit by the cancelled May exam.
  • Admitted students can begin the MD in Grenada or at Northumbria University in the UK.
  • SGU students won over 800 US residency positions in 2026 across 23 specialities.

Caribbean medical schools have long drawn Indian students seeking an MD route. SGU ranks among the largest, with graduates across more than 50 countries. The August window now suits NEET 2026 aspirants short on time.

Why SGU Opened an August Intake for India?

India's NEET-UG 2026 cycle has been rocky this year. The National Testing Agency cancelled the May exam after a paper leak. It re-held the test on June 21, 2026. The delay left medical aspirants unsure of their next step.

  • SGU's August intake aligns with the Indian academic calendar.
  • Students can move into the MD track without a gap year.
  • The school frames this as a timely route for delayed applicants.

"For Indian students, timing is one of the most critical factors in pursuing a medical career, particularly in a year marked by changes to the NEET admission cycle," said Kevin Romao, Regional Director, Asia at SGU.

What it means for Indian Students: An August start means no lost year after the NEET-UG 2026 delay. You can begin the MD this cycle.

What the SGU August Intake Offers Indian Students

SGU runs a four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Students from other systems can enter through five, six or seven year tracks. The school was founded in 1976 and draws students from over 150 countries.

Admitted students pick where they start. One route begins in Grenada. Another begins at Northumbria University in Newcastle, UK. The UK route adds a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree.

Route Where you start Degree earned
Four-year MD Grenada campus MD from SGU
Northumbria track Newcastle, UK MD from SGU plus BMedSci from Northumbria
Five-year pathway Year 1 in India MD from SGU

SGU also runs clinical training across 75+ affiliated hospitals in the US and UK. This network supports the later years of the degree. Read more on the St. George's University School of Medicine profile.

How Do Indian Students Apply to SGU?

SGU admits to the School of Medicine on a rolling basis. There is no application fee. Applicants usually hear an interview decision within five business days.

You can apply through the online SGU application. Existing AMCAS, AACOMAS or TMDSAS applications also work. See the official SGU Medical School admissions page for the full checklist.

Important Note: The source does not specify an exact August 2026 deadline. Apply early, since seats fill on a rolling basis.

Why NEET Still Decides Your SGU Plan?

NEET qualification stays mandatory for Indian students going abroad. The rule applies to all admissions after June 5, 2019. Your SGU plan depends on a valid NEET result.

  • You need at least the 50th percentile in NEET to qualify for abroad admission.
  • A NEET score stays valid for 3 years for abroad admissions.
  • NEET is required later to sit the FMGE licensing exam in India.

Foreign schools do not rank you by NEET score. They only need the qualifying result. Check the marks required in NEET for MBBS abroad first.

Key Caveat: Without NEET, you cannot sit the FMGE. An SGU MD alone will not let you practise in India.

SGU US Residency and Career Track Record

SGU points to a long output of doctors. It has trained over 25,000 graduates since 1981. They now practise in more than 50 countries.

In 2026, SGU students secured over 800 US residency positions across 23 specialties. Its accreditor, the Grenada Medical and Dental Council, is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education. US authorities also recognise it for residency eligibility.

SGU offers merit scholarships to Indian applicants too. The SGU Medical Scholar Award is one such award. It targets high achieving international students.

The August 2026 intake gives NEET 2026 students a fast track. SGU runs admissions on a rolling basis, so early files help. The choice still rests on a valid NEET result and your preferred start.

Action Plan

  1. Confirm your NEET-UG 2026 result clears the 50th percentile.
  2. Pick your start point, Grenada or Northumbria in the UK.
  3. Open the online SGU application, which carries no fee.
  4. Apply early, since the School of Medicine admits on a rolling basis.
  5. Ask your admissions officer about the SGU Medical Scholar Award.

Next SGU Intake to Watch: The August 2026 cohort starts this term. SGU's next School of Medicine intake opens for January 2027.
