Northumbria University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Northumbria applies India-specific academic mapping, with lower cutoffs recognised for graduates from Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune universities.
Postgraduate Requirements
- Academic: Bachelor’s with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (equivalent to UK 2:1); 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 accepted for lower entry (52% from Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune universities)
- English: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band; healthcare programmes require 7.0 overall
- Credential verification: Notarised English transcripts; WES not mandatory but accepted
- Programme-specific: MBA prefers 2 years managerial experience; MSc Data Science requires quantitative background
Undergraduate Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 CBSE, ICSE, or state board with 65% overall; 70% for engineering with Maths and Physics
- English: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band
- Waivers: Indian applicants who completed Class 12 in English medium may qualify for an English test waiver at admissions discretion
Northumbria accepts IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, LanguageCert Academic, Cambridge Advanced, Trinity ISE, and PSI Skills for English. Verify the exact component minimums per test at the official English requirements page.
Key insight: The Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune concession lowers the effective cutoff by 3 percentage points, opening Northumbria to Indian graduates who fall short of the standard 2:1 mapping used by other UK Russell Group and post-92 institutions.
Northumbria University Acceptance Rate 2027
Northumbria University does not publish an official acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place the international admit rate at 55% to 65% (estimated), making it a moderately selective post-92 institution. The rate varies sharply by programme, with high-demand MSc Data Science, MBA, and Cyber Security running significantly tighter than the university average.
Indian applicants who meet the 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 bachelor’s threshold with the required IELTS 6.5 typically receive conditional offers within 3 to 4 weeks. Meeting the academic and English minimums does not guarantee admission for capped programmes.
Reality check: Northumbria targets Indian applicants who fall just outside the 2:1 threshold used by Russell Group universities. Applicants with 55% to 60% bachelor’s grades who write a strong statement of purpose have a realistic chance of admission.

- Post-study work: UK Graduate Route allows 2 years of work permission after completion; 3 years for PhD graduates

Northumbria University vs Peer Universities
Comparison across mid-tier UK universities Indian PG applicants shortlist alongside Northumbria.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northumbria University | #528 | GBP 21,500 (INR 28.11 lakh) | Automatic GBP 3,000 South Asia scholarship |
| Coventry University | #571 | GBP 20,050 (INR 26.21 lakh) | Strong London campus for MBA and IT |
| University of Hertfordshire | #851 to #900 | GBP 17,650 (INR 23.07 lakh) | Lowest fees among direct peers |
| De Montfort University | #701 to #710 | GBP 17,250 (INR 22.55 lakh) | Strong creative and cyber security offering |
| Teesside University | #601 to #650 | GBP 17,745 (INR 23.20 lakh) | Regional pricing advantage in the North East |
Northumbria carries the strongest QS World position of the direct North East and post-92 peer set. The triple-accredited business school and automatic South Asia scholarship give it a measurable edge over Coventry and Hertfordshire for cost-conscious Indian applicants targeting UK PG business or computing degrees.
Northumbria fits Indian applicants targeting a total 15-month investment of roughly INR 46 lakh with realistic access to a UK starting salary of INR 42 to 50 lakh, backed by the 2-year Graduate Route work permission and a triple-accredited business school. The 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 bachelor’s cutoff, with a 55% fallback route, opens the door for applicants who fall short of Russell Group thresholds.
The university is not the right pick for applicants chasing top-100 QS World brand recognition, aggressive research supervision at PhD level, or a London-first postgraduate experience; those students should look instead at the University of Leeds or Queen Mary University of London for a comparable fee band with a stronger global ranking.

- Northumbria has two campuses in Newcastle: City campus and Coach Lane. I studied at City Campus, which has great facilities like a 24/7 library, a sports center, a student union, and medical services. The campus is always buzzing with events like Fresher's week, International Festivals, and Career fairs.

- Integrated Learning atmosphere and modules.
- Excellent virtual boardrooms for construction Management and built environment classrooms ( Trinity and Ellison).
- Sports Centre for it's excellent sports facilities and especially, the swimming pools and badminton courts made me a huge fan of the university facility team. Anyone would complement them for the way they maintained the facility.
Dislikes
- The liberal attitude can be toned down a little bit for students to focus more on their studies.
- This is in conjunction with previous point. I stated the previous point because the university has excellent academic and support facilities. The liberal attitude could at times make students lose track of the opportunity in hand and time waits for no one. Therefore, stated
- A proper lunchroom would be helpful instead of just grub food and a small snack shop.
Campus Life
- Our university has two campuses. One is based in Newcastle Upon Tyne and other in Amsterdam. Libraries, sports center, pub and special labs for licensed software usage is also present. University Digital library and Commons library are open 24/7. Christmas and easter holidays are celebrated in a very grand manner.
- There are several student organizations and book clubs. However, the elected student representatives who are part of university student committee are actually responsible for addressal of student concern through highlighting issues to university authorities.
Fees
- 18000 pounds were the fees. It was charged semester-wise. I spent around 600 pounds a month. It included housing, food, transportation and recreation. It is possible to keep your expenses as low as 300-350 pounds. I am saying this if the student is planning to lead a very meagre lifestyle by residing in a house with more than the permitted number of residents, which is not recommended in the current scenario of the UK.

- Well Qualified Staffs
- Located in heart of London City (Zone 1)
- University will provide very good academic support
Dislikes
- We cant get the Big UK university experience in this campus as it is a very small campus. If you are only focused in studies and not considering the University environment then it is not a big deal.
- As it is located in central London (Zone 1) transportation is little expensive. but you will be having only 2 days of offline class.
- In this campus there is no physical Library, but you will be having access to the online library which is huge. You can get any articles or books form online library 24/7.
Campus Life
- There is no big events or fests in this London Campus, as I told before it is really a small campus. Main campus is in New castle.
- As I answered before there is no big facilities, you will have a pantry where you can get Tea or coffee as much as you want and the study area apart from that nothing much.
- Sorry, No campus festivals. No extra curricular activities. Those are there just for name sake.
Fees
- My tuition fee was £19200, they asked me to pay a deposit of £5000 and then balance the amount after my course started.
- Transportation cost will be totally based on which zone you are living and weekly only 2 days will need to attend the class. So considering transportation it will be around £50 per month.
- Rent also totally depends, whether it is single sharing, Double sharing or three sharing but in average it will be around £350 to £400 per month if you need a decent place to live.
