CBSE and British Council Host Conference to Enhance School Education through Innovative Teaching Methods

New Delhi: The British Council, in partnership with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), hosted a school education conference aimed at encouraging innovative teaching methodologies across India. 

Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of School Education, inaugurated the two-day CBSE conference with 300 schools, educational institutions, government bodies, and apex education leaders. During the CBSE and British Council Education Conference several sessions were tailored to enlighten school leaders and expert practitioners about resources that can enrich teaching, learning, and assessment practices. 

Notable educators and experts from renowned entities like the Jane Goodall Foundation, Premier League, Micro Bit Foundation, Alpha Plus, Cambridge University Press and Assessments (CUPA), and CBSE conducted masterclasses, enriching attendees with valuable insights and tools. 

What Happened at CBSE and British Council Conference?

Cambridge University Press and Assessment shared insights from their study titled ‘Recommendations for strengthening pedagogy and assessment of practical teaching in classes 5-10'. This study, commissioned by the British Council and CBSE, analyzed the teaching and learning methodologies in CBSE schools. It specifically aimed to foster high-quality hands-on practical and fieldwork activities, emphasizing experiential learning across subjects such as science, mathematics, social science, and languages. 

The conference engaged in multifaceted discussions, focusing on curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment priorities for 21st-century schools. There was a keen emphasis on enhancing computational thinking and digital technology integration within the classroom. Additionally, deliberations encompassed approaches to seamlessly integrate environmental education, sustainability, and mindfulness across subjects, aligning with NEP 2020 and NCF 2023. 

Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, emphasized, "School education must sensitize students about the environment and climate while fostering a deep bond with nature. With climate change increasingly affecting our world, action and learning at the school level is crucial. The NEP and NCF mandate textbooks on climate change and education to impart sustainability's importance." 

Alison Barrett MBE, Director India, British Council, highlighted the importance of integrating climate and sustainability education into the school curriculum, emphasizing their critical role in changing mindsets and behaviors. Dr. Joseph Emmanuel, Director of Academics, CBSE, stressed the need to equip students with essential knowledge and skills to understand and address environmental challenges. He urged stakeholders to embrace these discussions as catalysts for empowering schools with relevant methodologies for the 21st century. This collaborative effort between British Council and CBSE aims to revolutionize teaching methodologies, empowering educators and policymakers to shape an inclusive and future-oriented educational landscape across India.
