Popular Indian-student picks include the MPhil in Machine Learning, MPhil in Engineering, MPhil in Economics, LLM and Cambridge Judge MBA. University of Cambridge Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Cambridge assesses Indian applicants against the same academic bar as UK First-Class Honours for competitive postgraduate courses. Undergraduate admission adds a course-specific pre-interview assessment.

Postgraduate requirements for Indian applicants:

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 75% or CGPA 8.0/10 (First-Class equivalent) for most MPhil and research masters courses; 70% or CGPA 7.3/10 (2:1 equivalent) accepted for the MBA and select taught masters, per the Cambridge International Qualifications page for India (recommended).
  • English test: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with 7.0 in each element for most PG courses; individual course pages may specify a higher or lower minimum.
  • Additional accepted English tests: IELTS UKVI, IELTS Online, IELTS One Skill Retake, Cambridge C1 Advanced and Cambridge C2 Proficiency for selected courses; TOEFL iBT accepted only if taken on or before 21 January 2026, with a Cambridge Language Centre supplementary assessment required for post-January 2026 scores.
  • Standardised tests: Cambridge Judge MBA requires GMAT or GRE; most MPhil taught masters do not require GRE.

Undergraduate requirements for Indian applicants:

  • Academic: Class 12 with 90% aggregate for STEM (Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Medicine) and 85% for humanities and social sciences (recommended).
  • Admission assessment: ESAT (Engineering and Sciences), TMUA (Mathematics), LNAT (Law) or subject-specific assessment, taken at Cambridge Assessment centres in India.
  • English test: IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with 7.0 in each element for most UG courses.

Key insight: Cambridge does not require SAT for undergraduate Indian applicants. Class 12 predicted or actual marks combined with the pre-interview assessment (ESAT, TMUA, LNAT) form the interview shortlist.

University of Cambridge Acceptance Rate 2027

Cambridge runs one of the toughest admissions filters in the UK. The overall Cambridge University acceptance rate is 21%. For international applicants including Indians, the rate drops to 15.4%. These figures come from Cambridge’s official admissions statistics.

Cambridge received over 22,000 undergraduate applications in the 2024-25 cycle and made roughly 4,700 offers. For Indian applicants specifically, competition sits highest in Computer Science, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Economics and Medicine, courses that draw both UK and international top scorers.

Reality check: The 15.4% international acceptance rate does not translate to a 1-in-7 chance from India. Applicants from top Indian institutions with 90% Class 12 marks, strong ESAT or TMUA scores, and a clear research fit see materially higher offer rates.

University of Cambridge vs Peer Universities

Cambridge University is most often benchmarked against Oxford, Imperial, LSE and UCL in the UK. The peer set below focuses on QS World 2026 rank, average annual PG overseas fee and the one-line differentiator relative to Cambridge.

University QS World 2026 Avg Annual PG Fee (Overseas) Differentiator vs Cambridge
University of Cambridge #6 £43,000 to £86,250
(55.7 to 111.7 Lakh)
Reference: collegiate, 9-month MPhil format, deepest Indian funding pool
University of Oxford #3 £30,000 to £60,000
(38.9 to 77.7 Lakh)
Sister university; identical 8-week collegiate term structure
Imperial College London #2 £39,900 to £61,400
(51.7 to 79.5 Lakh)
Pure STEM focus; central London base; broader industry recruiter access
University College London (UCL) #9 £32,000 to £42,000
(41.4 to 54.4 Lakh)
Wider course breadth; no collegiate residence system
LSE (London School of Economics) #50 £32,000 to £42,000
(41.4 to 54.4 Lakh)
Lower tuition; deepest UK bench for economics, finance and policy

Cambridge stands out on two data-backed axes: top-6 across every world ranking body for 2026-2027, and a one-year MPhil format that Oxford matches but Imperial, UCL and LSE run mostly as 12-to-15 month taught programmes with different research structure. It costs £65,000 to £110,000 per year all-in, on the higher end for UK PG study.

Note: Applicants with borderline profiles should apply to Imperial College London as the strongest UK-tier backup and to a Group of Eight Australian university (Australia’s top eight research universities) as a safe second option.

Cambridge University fits Indian applicants with a first-class Indian bachelor’s, targeting research-intensive MPhil, PhD or the Judge MBA. It works best as a springboard to a Cambridge or US PhD, DeepMind research role or global consulting exit. Total investment of ₹84 to ₹142 Lakh returns a year-one Cambridge MBA base salary of ₹98.6 Lakh. All Cambridge programmes unlock the Graduate Route for post-study work in the United Kingdom.

Cambridge University does not suit applicants seeking two-year US-style masters or guaranteed employer sponsorship. It also does not fit Class 12 profiles averaged below 85%. Imperial College London offers stronger applicant-fit outcomes for pure STEM aspirants at similar cost.

FAQs

Ques. Which English tests does the University of Cambridge accept besides IELTS?

Ans. Cambridge accepts IELTS Academic (minimum 7.5 overall, 7.0 in each element for most PG courses), IELTS UKVI, IELTS Online, IELTS One Skill Retake, Cambridge C1 Advanced and Cambridge C2 Proficiency for select courses. TOEFL iBT is accepted only if taken on or before 21 January 2026; results dated after that require an additional online assessment at the Cambridge Language Centre before enrolment.

Ques. How many hours per week can Cambridge University Indian students work?

Ans. Cambridge PG students on a UK Student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term and full-time during vacations, matching UK Home Office rules for all higher education students. Cambridge itself does not impose stricter limits, but MPhil students are advised to prioritise the 9-month intensive workload. Work rights end on the last day of the course before Graduate Route conversion.

Ques. Does the Cambridge Judge MBA require GMAT or GRE from Indian applicants?

Ans. Yes. The Cambridge Judge MBA requires a valid GMAT or GRE score for Indian applicants, with no automatic waiver policy. Judge’s typical GMAT range sits at 640 to 780, with the class median around 690. GRE and the GMAT Focus Edition are both accepted. The Executive Assessment is not accepted for the full-time MBA. Test scores should be under 5 years old at the application date.

Ques. What is the University of Cambridge PG application fee for Indian applicants?

Ans. The Cambridge Judge MBA application fee is £165 (₹21,400) for September 2027 entry, confirmed on the Judge Business School site. Standard postgraduate courses at Cambridge charge a smaller per-course application fee, payable at submission through the Applicant Portal; verify the current amount on your specific course page. Application fee waivers are available for candidates from a set list of low-income countries; India is not on the current waiver list.

Ques. Which Indian banks approve education loans for Cambridge University degrees?

Ans. Cambridge appears on the approved-institution list of SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, and non-banking lenders such as Avanse, Auxilo, Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing. Loan quantum for Cambridge typically covers full tuition plus living costs. Approved lenders offer both secured (collateral) and unsecured (co-signer) tracks; unsecured tracks are common for shortlisted Cambridge applicants.

Ques. Can Cambridge PG students bring their spouse on a UK dependent visa?

Ans. Yes, but only for PhD or research-master courses of 9 months or longer. Under current UK Home Office rules, only PhD candidates and government-sponsored students can bring a Student visa dependent; taught masters (most one-year MPhils and the MBA) cannot bring a spouse or child dependent. PhD applicants can bring dependents with financial proof of about £845 per month per person, subject to Home Office updates.

Ques. What triggers a conditional offer at the University of Cambridge for Indians?

Ans. Conditional offers usually turn on three factors for Indian applicants: pending final bachelor’s transcript or Class 12 mark sheets not yet issued at application time, English test score not yet available or below the course minimum, and course-specific conditions such as a required dissertation grade. Offers stipulate the exact final mark, test score or supporting document needed; conditions must normally be met by 31 July before enrolment.

Ques. How does the University of Cambridge refund policy work on withdrawal?

Ans. Cambridge follows a term-based University Composition Fee refund schedule set alongside each college. Students who withdraw before term begins typically receive a full refund. Withdrawal during term forfeits a portion or all of the term’s fee, depending on timing. College Fees follow separate refund schedules set by each of the 31 colleges. All refunds require formal withdrawal notification through the Applicant Portal or the College office.

  • The University of Cambridge comprises 31 colleges, some as old as 700 years and as new as 50 years. Each college has its student body, bar, gym, library, and associated culture. Colleges are like mini socialites within Cambridge, catering to different aspects of student life, like Newnham, which is an all-female college, while Wolfson is a mature college allowing only 21-year-old students. Some colleges are heavy in certain subjects due to their student representation. Churchill is more Computer Science heavy due to proximity with the department, while Trinity college is Math heavy due to the influence of Sir Isaac Newton.
  • There are several clubs for extracurricular activities at Cambridge. you have college-wide clubs and university-wide clubs, ranging from wine tasting to motor sports.
  • Socialising with other colleges is a major part of university life. You can attend college events through your friends belonging to certain colleges, for example, King's and St John's. Or it could be open, like in Wolfson or St Edmund's. You can also attend formal dinner swaps, where two colleges exchange their students during a formal dinner. At the end of the academic year, each college hosts their annual grand party, called May Balls, which used to be held in May but now is hosted in the last week of June.

  • There are no "Campus" of sorts, Cambridge is a university town, the departments and college accommodations spread through the main Cambridge city.
  • Cambridge University has all the facilities for each and every sport, several libraries and nurses in each college. University students have access to all these facilities free of cost and major sports could have free trials.
  • There are various career fares, tech festivals running throughout the year from different departments. There are more than 100 clubs and student led organizations to take part in.

Fees

  • The MBA fee is given in two terms, first when you have to confirm your acceptance. You need to pay around 10 lakhs, and the rest you need to pay anytime before the course starts.
  • Monthly expenses in the UK are around 1 lakh rupees per month including rent, food and utilities. Food is provided in colleges but every meal is to be paid separately and is quite expensive but cheaper then other alternatives.

Many events are organised by the different departments of the university and these include concerts, speeches, etc. These are simply awesome and provide a new experience every time. We also get opportunities to meet people having remarkable contributions to the field of literature and language and it's always a pleasure meeting them.

Overview

It's prestigious and this means that graduates often enjoy excellent job opportunities. It's hard to get into (interview process, high grades, etc.) so the need to work hard to get in was a source of motivation when I was studying for my A level exams.

Fees

?9250 a year for UK students, though most people are eligible for a student loan to help them fund the costs. Most people live in college residence and the cost of accommodation varies according to where you stay - usually less than $2000 a term. Events like formal dinners do cost money, though not a lot, usually about $15 for a 3-course meal, which I find very reasonable. May Ball tickets almost always cost over $100 which I think to be extortionate.
