DU To Launch Multi-Disciplinary Centre On Tribal Studies

New Delhi: A senior varsity official said on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 that the Delhi University will launch a multi-disciplinary institute on tribal studies to teach students about the role of tribal leaders to society during different eras of Indian history. According to DU officials, the proposal in this regard will be reviewed at a meeting of the Academic Council on Friday, May 26, 2023.

According to a recently-issued ordinance, the new centre would have seven main goals, including studying the "social, cultural, linguistic, religious, economic, and environmental diversity and commonalities" of various tribes and interpreting the term "tribe" from an India-centric perspective.

The law states that students might get the chance to "study and document various Lok traditions of India's tribes including their indigenous/traditional knowledge". The ordinance noted that the centre also intends to "bring out to prominence the unsung heroes among them" and emphasise the contribution of tribal leaders to India's freedom movement.

Identification of the issues facing Denotified and Nomadic Tribes and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) with regard to conservation, development, and particular health needs is another area of attention for the new centre. The importance of forest-tribe linkages with an emphasis on the stability of forest ecosystems and livelihood issues will also be studied by centre students.

The legislation states that a new entity would be established under the university's Executive Council to oversee the management of the multidisciplinary centre. The ordinance stated that all costs incurred by the centre, including those for seminars, research endeavours, teaching, publishing, administration, equipment, and other support activities, must be made in accordance with the General Financial Rules, allocation, and other rules and regulations as may be appropriate.

“Depending on the requirements from time to time, further financial help may be sought from various government agencies or through partnerships with national and international organisations,” it added.
