The "Swayam Prabha" channel will broadcast new content at least four hours every day, which will be repeated five times a day for the convenience of students. This initiative aims to offer students an opportunity to learn in their own mother tongue.

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced the "Swayam Prabha" channel in Manipur. It includes a set of 40 DTH channels that will broadcast educational programs every day (24x7, seven days a week) through the GSAT-15 satellite.
The channel was launched by Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs and Education in Manipuri in the presence of over 700 students, educationists, media persons, Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellors of IGNOU and other senior officers.
Speaking on this occasion, Nageshwar Rao, Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU said, “Multilingualism is being promoted by IGNOU as per the mandate of NEP 2020 and the university has been focusing in a big way on developing content in different languages”.

As per the officials, the decision to launch an educational channel based program was made to ensure that students of Manipur can gain education in their own mother tongue. The channel will broadcast new content at least four hours every day, which will be repeated five times a day.
Informing about the channel, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh said, “The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes on teaching in the mother tongue and the initiative of IGNOU in channel-based teaching in the mother tongue is seen as a major intervention in this direction.
Adding to the statement, he said, “Inauguration of channel-based counselling in Manipuri language will open up opportunities of education in mother tongue for the large population of Manipuri diaspora living in other parts of the world”.

The event was broadcast live on IGNOU’s official YouTube and Facebook account and the university's "Swayam Prabha" channel. Shrikant Mohapatra and Uma Kanjilal, Pro-vice Chancellors of IGNOU shared the initiatives taken in this area by the university at the event.
