IIT Bombay and UChicago Forge Science-Tech Collaboration During G20 Summit 2023; Check Details Here

New Delhi: IIT Bombay and the University of Chicago announced a new science and technology partnership on September 8, 2023. This partnership will foster collaboration in areas like quantum information science, climate and energy, advanced microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and data science. 

IIT Bombay has also become an international partner of the University of Chicago-based Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE).

At a discussion between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and American President Joe Biden at the G20 summit in New Delhi, India, the CQE news was highlighted. 

The objectives of the U.S.-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) to strengthen and broaden strategic partnerships between the two countries' governments, corporations, and academic institutions are reiterated by UChicago's new collaboration with IIT Bombay.

“Global alliances are necessary for doing field-defining research at the frontiers of knowledge. This partnership between the University of Chicago and IIT Bombay is crucial for the development of future talent in these domains as well as the scale that our combined efforts on new and emerging technologies will achieve,” said Juan de Pablo, the Liew Family Professor of Executive Vice President for Science, Innovation, National Laboratories, and Global Initiatives at the University of Chicago and Molecular Engineering.

IIT Bombay is now one of just five foreign partners in the CQE. The Centre for Quantum Engineering (CQE), which has its headquarters at the University of Chicago, is supported by Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern University, and Wisconsin-Madison.

The first at the G7 regarding a collaboration between the Universities of Chicago, Tokyo, IBM, and Google to construct the first quantum supercomputer, and the second with Tohoku University to quicken quantum research. Following recent UChicago announcements in Japan that centred on quantum technologies, the news of the relationship between UChicago and IIT Bombay is now available. 

One of India's top centres for quantum research, the Quantum Information Computing Science & Technology (QuICST) Hub, is anchored by IIT Bombay.

Strong international collaborations are crucial for building a strong quantum ecosystem because they offer the knowledge and resources needed to advance ground-breaking innovation. David Awschalom, the Liew Family Professor in Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, senior scientist at Argonne, and head of the Chicago Quantum Exchange, expressed his excitement about the partnership with IIT Bombay.

Beyond quantum, collaboration and joint research in fields like climate, energy, cutting-edge microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and data science will be carried out by UChicago and IIT Bombay. In these areas, there will be a lot of conferences, information exchanges, faculty and scholar visits, and joint research efforts.

The University's Centre in Delhi, which opened in 2014, will be a resource for these and related collaborations for UChicago researchers visiting India.

The University of Chicago wants to improve partnerships with Indian colleagues in the fields of science, technology, and engineering, where the United States and India are increasingly collaborating on research and development. Supratik Guha, faculty director of the Delhi Centre, professor at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, and senior advisor to Argonne National Laboratory's Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate, called this partnership with IIT Bombay "an outstanding opportunity to build shared U.S.-Indian scientific knowledge."
