IIT Gandhinagar BTech Students Can Now Choose Industry Training Over Regular 7th Semester

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has approved a new elective route. The course, coded IN 498 External Exposure, replaces classroom lectures with real-world work. It applies to seventh-semester BTech students from the 2025-26 academic year onwards.

Students who choose this route spend the full semester outside the classroom. They can join an industry firm, a research lab, or a startup. The route awards up to 16 academic credits toward the BTech degree.

The elective is optional and does not replace the regular seventh semester by default. Students who prefer classes can continue with the standard curriculum. Those seeking practical exposure now have a formal, credit-bearing alternative.

Dean of Academic Affairs Prof. Bhaskar Datta confirmed the initiative in an official note. He said the programme nurtures future-ready students for a technology-driven economy.

IN 498 External Exposure Key Details

What Does the External Exposure Route Change?

The seventh semester at IITGN usually carries core courses, electives, and a project. Under IN 498, students can swap this entire academic load for external work. The credit weight matches a normal semester of study.

The route works as a full replacement, not a summer internship extension. Students commit to the host for the entire four-month period. This gives them time to see a project cycle end to end.

Which Placements Qualify Under the Route?

IITGN allows four broad categories of external exposure activities. Students can pick any option that fits their academic and career goals.

• Industrial internships with recognised technology, finance, or engineering firms
• External academic engagements with universities or institutes in India or abroad
• Research and development lab placements at government or private centres
• Startup roles within the entrepreneurship ecosystem, including product and operations

Each option carries the same maximum credit weight of 16. The host must be a recognised firm, institute, or registered startup.

Where Did the First Cohort Go?

The pilot batch of 18 students joined a diverse set of hosts. The list spans large technology firms, research labs, and one startup.

The mix shows that both Indian and global hosts count under the route. Students at Caltech and IISc gained pure research exposure. Those at Qualcomm, Samsung, and Oracle worked in technology product teams.

How Does the Approval Process Work?

Students must secure prior approval from IITGN before joining any host. The host and the parent department jointly track work through the semester.

• Student identifies a host aligned with academic goals
• Institute reviews the plan and grants prior approval
• Host organisation provides written input on performance
• Parent department runs periodic academic reviews
• Final assessment decides the credit award

The credit award depends on both host feedback and departmental reviews. Poor performance or non-completion can reduce or cancel the credits.
