The Electrical Engineering Department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar conducted the National Power System Conference (NPSC 2020) online from December 17 to December 19, 2020.
NPSC is a biennial conference that provides a platform to students and academics alike to discuss innovations, challenges, and trends in the field of smart energy systems and power. More than 200 participants from abroad and India took part in the event held by IIT Gandhinagar.
The theme of the event conducted by IIT Gandhinagar was Sustainable Energy and Resilient Future Grid which was interestingly discussed among power companies and stakeholders.
KVS Baba, CMD of Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (POSOCO) was invited as the chief guest at the event. He spoke about the decentralization and rapid digitization of the world through IT and social media.
KVS Bala further stated, “For a modern technical society like India’s, NPSC is one of the premier platforms where all aspects of power systems attract attendees. The challenge of skills and mindset, especially in the aftermath of Covid pandemic, has to be confronted with industry and academia collaboration, and the same is possible through this conference platform.”
The main focus of the NPSC 2020 was on power electronics, electrical machines, system integration, electricity markets, smart grid, renewable energy, distributed generation, and operational challenges.
The main attractions in NPSC 2020 were keynote lectures on power electronics, renewable energy systems, power systems, smart grid, and soft computing.
Prof Anjan Bose from Washington State University gave a brief background about the 1st digital grid control centers that were installed in the 1960s. He spoke about the improvements in computer technology that allowed more complex applications at the control center which resulted in the contemporary Energy Management Systems.
Professor Luis Ochoa of Melbourne University added that the future of electricity distribution was very exciting. However, smart solutions are needed to assess any problems in planning and operations.
NPSC 2020 featured two dedicated industry-academia panel sessions, four tutorial sessions, Keynote talks, and 132 technical paper presentations.
The NPSC Academic and Industry excellence awards 2020, Dr. M Ramamoorty's best paper awards in Power Systems and Power Electronics & Drives, and Malaviya excellence award in Power Systems were also given during the conference held at IIT Gandhinagar.
Various organizations like IEEE Gujarat Section, Power & Energy Society (PES) Gujarat Chapter, and IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) technically supported the event organized at IIT Gandhinagar. On the other hand POSOCO, OPAL-RT Technologies, ENPHASE, and POWERGRID were the sponsors of the event.
