Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has established the NRL - Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Sustainable Materials Translational Facility on Bioplastics at its campus.

New Delhi: On the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, the NRL - Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Sustainable Materials Translational Facility on Bioplastics has been established. According to IIT Guwahati, the new facility has been set up to strive towards the creation of environmentally friendly, long-lasting polymers.

IIT Guwahati made the following comment in a statement about this topic: "Environmental concerns associated with existing plastics have resulted in an urgent need to develop alternatives that should have practically identical performance properties at comparable production cost".

"First of its kind academic-industrial collaboration" describes the alliance between IIT Guwahati and NRL to launch the CoE for Sustainable Materials Translational Facility on Bioplastics. According to IIT Guwahati, this project aims to support research and development activity while also producing biodegradable polymers using leftover and intermediate components.

IIT Guwahati's Officiating Director, Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, stated in a statement regarding the recently opened Translational Facility, "Such overall technical advancement in the domain of biodegradable plastics through industrial support is a one-of-a-kind endeavour in the country.

We are optimistic that the sectors will utilise the knowledge base at their disposal to accelerate future commercial activity in the biodegradable plastics industry because the current plastic crisis needs to be solved right away. The recently established translational facility on bioplastics at IIT Guwahati is home to the first biodegradable plastic production pilot plant as well as a number of processing facilities for various biodegradable plastic products, including compostable cutlery, carry bags, plastic containers, and glasses, among others.

These facilities make use of thermoforming, injection moulding, cast sheet, and bespoke film packaging lines. It was stated that these facilities will help increase awareness among businesses across the country so they can understand the fundamentals of developing commercial production facilities to satisfy the needs of a sustainable society.
