IIT Guwahati has launched an online BSc (honours) degree in data science and artificial intelligence on the online learning platform Coursera.
New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati has announced an online Bachelor of Science (Hons) curriculum in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence on Coursera today, July 5, 2023 . Aspiring candidates can submit their online applications at the official website, iitg.ac.in/acad.
According to the official schedule of IIT Guwahati, the BSc (Honors) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence curriculum will accept applications from July 19, 2023 onwards, and the classes will begin in October 2023. "There is no upper bound in this course.
Any student who took mathematics in class 12 is eligible to be admitted to this course," Parameswar K. Iyer, the director of IIT Guwahati, said. This is true regardless of the student's stream (it may be Science, Commerce, or Humanities).
Additionally, this new plan will offer a variety of access and departure points. The candidate will receive an Advanced Certificate if they drop out of the study after the first year. According to Prof. Iyer, if students drop out after the second year, they receive a diploma, a regular BSc degree after the third year, and a full BSc honors degree after four years.
Furthermore, a JEE Main score is not required, but those who are qualified and have enrolled for JEE Advanced (in any year) would receive direct admission. Those who have not registered for JEE Advanced can take an online course and be admitted depending on their performance.
Students will be encouraged to complete internships as part of this degree, and the institute will also provide interested individuals with a campus immersion programme. Additionally, the academics from IIT Guwahati and other professionals in the field created all of the course materials.
"The fact that candidates have a total of eight years to finish this degree is a significant benefit that IIT Guwahati is adding to this programme. Additionally, because this course will be entirely online, students won't have to worry about transportation or any other concerns," said Prof. Iyer.
In order to assist enrolled students in getting placed, IIT Guwahati and Coursera will collaborate to offer career and counselling advice.
Is Artificial Intelligence the new threat?
The IIT Guwahati head denied these claims when questioned if this course directly contradicts the recent concept that artificial intelligence will replace people in the workforce.
"I want to emphasize that whenever a new technology has emerged, there has always been the fear that it will eliminate our jobs or cause issues, but humans have always found ways to use it wisely, to improve our capabilities, and to make things easier and more effective," he said.
“We have the resources to generate enormous amounts of data for a variety of tasks. However, in order to manage such a large amount of data and the surrounding environment, we now require additional assistance, which comes in the shape of artificial intelligence as well as data science, data analysis, and data science. AI will increase our productivity,” he concluded.
