Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has recently established a Centre for Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CeRAI) where Google has donated USD 1 million.
New Delhi: Recently, the Centre for responsible artificial intelligence (CeRAI) has been established by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M). The AI centre at IITM strives to develop AI-based solutions in a way that is morally and responsibly sound.
With its $1 million USD donation to the centre, Google has become the first platinum consortium member. IIT Madras will concentrate on basic and practical research in Responsible AI that will have a direct impact on implementing AI systems in the Indian ecosystem.
Further, the center conducted its first workshop, 'Responsible AI for India', where a panel discussion aimed at fostering different relationships and collaborations with governmental organisations, academic institutions, and industry was held.

The IITM's centre will develop sector-specific guidelines and suggestions for policymakers and offer all stakeholders the essential toolkits to ensure ethical and responsible behaviour. A number of technical activities, including workshops and conferences, will also be held with an emphasis on ethics and accountability.
IIT Madras Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) director Balaraman Ravindran discussed the projects that would be undertaken in this facility.
He said that it is important for the AI model and its predictions to be explainable and interpretable when they are to be deployed in various critical sectors/domains such as Healthcare, Manufacturing, and Banking /Finance, among other areas. The research is required to provide assurance and risk models for AI systems across many industries.
IIT Madras director V Kamakoti emphasised the need for these facilities by saying that they have now reached a level where we must delegate responsibility to AI tools and evaluate the rationale for the output the AI produces.
In addition to the thorough study, issues with human augmentation, biassed data sets, the possibility of data leakage, and the introduction of new policies must be addressed. Building trust in AI is becoming increasingly important, and it is essential to introduce the idea of privacy. As long as domain interpretation is possible, AI won't eliminate any occupations, V Kamakoti said.
