Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will offer a four-year BS programme in medical sciences and engineering from the academic year 2023.
New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras has set up the Department of Medical Sciences and Technology, which will offer a four-year BS programme in medical sciences and engineering. According to the IITM, the four-year BS programme is a first of its kind in India.
IIT Madras has launched this 4-year BS Programme as an interdisciplinary approach to prepare students for building life-saving medical technologies, drug development, using artificial intelligence in medicine, and basic medical research. The Department of Medical Science and Technology will set the groundwork for the training of the physician-scientists in India. It will teach doctors how to use technology effectively in clinical practice.
The Top medical doctors from India and abroad, who were also closely involved in the development of the curriculum, will be the ‘Professors of Practice’ in this department. They have already established tie-ups with premier hospitals and medical institutions in India. Lakshmi Narayanan, co-founder of Cognizant, said that collaborative research in medical sciences can catapult India to a global leader in clinical outcomes.
The leadership in the fields of space, nuclear, digital, and biotechnology has shown that they are capable of doing research. It makes sense to expand this capability to include medicine. Narayanan said that the institute will also conduct both fundamental and applied research programs that connect various medical disciplines.
By providing the necessary resources and platform, the company is hoping to enable their researchers to create innovative technologies that will improve the lives of patients for generations to come. In addition, the institute will carry out basic and practical research projects that link diverse medical specialties. Also, the company is intending to empower their researchers to develop ground-breaking innovations that will enhance patients' lives for a generation by providing them the tools and platform they need.
Addressing the launch event, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said that it was clear after the COVID outbreak in India that the institute needed to integrate technology into medicine to effectively address such circumstances in the future as a nation. Although there's a hope that such difficulties won't recur, this intervention will be essential in determining the reaction.
Prof. V. Kamakoti continued that the goal is to bring together the experts in technology and medicine to develop ground-breaking solutions for medical problems that were previously intractable. The main objective is to transform healthcare by expanding the range of available treatments.
He added that in keeping with the vision of IITM for ALL, the institute strives to offer technology medical interventions that will allow every citizen of the nation to access high-quality, reasonably priced Medicare.

- BS in Medical Sciences & Engineering (4 Year Programme)
- PhD Programme for Doctors
- MS by Research for Doctors
- MS in Medical Sciences and Engineering
- PhD Programme for Science & Engineering Graduates
The Department of Medical Sciences and Technology, IIT Madras is headed by Prof. Boby George. He stated that by using this interdisciplinary approach to improve healthcare outcomes by leveraging engineering and medical knowledge, new technologies can be developed that monitor vital organ parameters, identify disease symptoms, and aid in providing targeted prevention and treatment options. There are countless opportunities as engineering and medicine continue to intersect.
According to course coordinator Prof. R Krishna Kumar, institute professor at IIT Madras, the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) would be used as the entrance procedure. Candidates must have passed a science-stream Class 12 (or equivalent) exam in 2022 or 2023 from a board that has been approved by the Council of Boards of Department of Education in India.
Speaking during the event, Prof R Krishna Kumar, asked the audience to imagine if they have the ability to develop a digital twin of a patient and test out various therapeutic regimens or surgical techniques, their recommendations for medical care could help the surgeon or doctor treating them immensely and save a life. They will be prepared by the course to play a key role in clinical practice in the future.
He continued that in order to connect theory and practice, the course format includes an internship in a hospital. Both medical and technical experts will teach the program's courses, which will give students a solid research foundation. The physician-scientists have played a major role in the development of medicines, devices, and technologies as well as in their understanding of how diseases evolve.
The department provides the MS (by research) and PhD programmes in an effort to increase the number of physician-scientists. The department is launching the entrepreneurial doctorate, a unique programme for clinicians. Through this programme, doctors will be able to develop a product, and the IIT system will support and mentor them as they pursue their entrepreneurial goals.
