IIT Madras has taken a proactive step in bolstering road safety efforts in Chennai by offering specialized training to the city's traffic police in the field of scientific crash investigation. Read the full details here!

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras' Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) trained the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) in structured collision investigations utilising root cause analysis matrix (RCAM) from September 6 to 9, 2023.
IIT Madras shared that the training session equipped the investigation officer (IO) with design thinking abilities to employ a human factors or empathy-based approach in determining the cause of accidents.
The workshop was split into two sections, with a three-day practical training session at IIT Madras coming first, and then the IOs applying what they learned in real-world situations and reporting back after two weeks.
The purpose of the training was to give the traffic police officer in charge (IO) the practical abilities needed for on-the-ground data collection, collation, and analysis in a structured fashion in accordance with the institute.

During the workshop, learners received practical instruction on how to conduct a structure crash investigation utilising IIT Madras's root cause analysis matrix (RCAM) technique. To help them better grasp the numerous human variables that contribute to traffic accidents, the traffic police officers were given advice on information sharing of best practices on the design thinking approach to problem-solving.
Thiru R Sudhakar, IPS, additional commissioner of police of traffic, Greater Chennai Police, said, “The cops will really benefit from taking this course. Implementing a mentality change in how we do investigations, will help us understand how we sometimes miss the human element while examining traffic incidents”.
Adding to the statement, Venkatesh Balasubramanian, Head of CoERS and RBG Labs, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, said, “We intend to introduce the investigating officers to a more result-oriented approach to crash investigations by implementing design thinking principles in a co-creative setting".
“In order to achieve this, CoERS created a structured framework known as RCAM that is based on the "Man, Machine (Vehicle), Method (of Driving), and Environment (3M&E)" paradigm. This approach to identifying a root cause is human-centric”, he added.
However, IIT Madras' CoERS' commitment to enhancing road safety through scientific crash investigation training for law enforcement agencies like the Greater Chennai Traffic Police is a testament to its dedication to improving road safety standards in India. This initiative plays a crucial role in reducing road accidents and saving lives on Indian roads.
