New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras has conducted a study identifying key and overlooked sources of microplastics in residential buildings, highlighting their substantial role in microplastic pollution. The research also explores the transportation, transformations, and detrimental effects of these microplastics on aquatic organisms and human health.

The IIT Madras analysis highlighted that everyday household activities, including dishwashing, laundry, showering, and toilet usage, collectively play a role in producing municipal wastewater. 

Additionally, items such as face masks and synthetic indoor materials like carpets contribute to environmental and indoor pollution, posing potential risks to aquatic and land-based ecosystems, as well as the well-being of humans and pets.

The analysis highlights the significance of adopting source reduction as a crucial strategy to address microplastic pollution. It suggests replacing personal care products with biodegradable alternatives and reducing the reliance on plastic-based items such as scouring pads. 

Furthermore, it advocates for the implementation of highly efficient filters in laundry machines to reduce the release of microplastics.

The comprehensive review, featured in the journal Environmental Science and Pollution Research, represents a pioneering effort to thoroughly examine various activities and products within residential buildings. 

It collectively acknowledges their substantial role in the generation of microplastics. The review was conducted by Ms. Angel Jessieleena, Ms. Kiruthika Eswari Velmaiel, Ms. Anju Anna John, and Prof. Indumathi M. Nambi of the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Division, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras, along with Ms. Sasikaladevi Rathinavelu from the Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras.
