Indian Nursing Council (INC) has exempted Puducherry state from CET for the purpose of admitting students to B.Sc. nursing programmes in the union territory.

New Delhi: The Indian Nursing Council (INC) has exempted Puducherry from the Common Entrance Test for the purpose of admitting students to B.Sc. nursing programmes in the union territory.

The union territory's exemption was put out by the council this academic year (2023–24), however it was followed by a letter from the Secretary of Health.

The INC agreed to exempt the UT of Puducherry "for admissions in B.Sc Nursing programme for the academic session 2023–24 as a one-time measure on the basis of your request," in response to a communication on June 21, 2023.

This announcement follows two civil society organisations, Puducherry UT All CENTAC Students' Parents' Association and Puducherry State Students and Parents Welfare Association, who filed petitions on behalf of the students. A week prior, a CET for colleges, including government, private, and deemed-to-be universities, was announced. They claimed that after the INC publicised the exam on May 8, 2023, the pupils would have trouble studying for it. As a result, this year's admissions will follow the standard procedure based on the grades obtained in the Class 12th examinations.

In the UT, there are 970 seats available for BSc Nursing among 13 nursing institutes. Only Mother Theresa Post Graduate Research Institute of Health Sciences, which has 80 seats, is a government college. Four others are regarded as universities, and eight are private.

Those who passed the NEET are still waiting for the National Medical Commission to recognise the India Mahatma Gandhi Medical college and Research Institute after it was discontinued in May.

The NMC-led undergraduate board of medical education's recommendations have already been implemented at the 150-seat MBBS college. College administrators are anticipating the same, says Dr. C. Udhayshankar, director of the medical college.
